‘Avatar’ Soars to New Box Office Record, Cosmic epic “Avatar” has sailed past “Titanic” to break the record as the highest grossing film of all time. The worldwide total for the James Cameron movie stands at 1.859 billion dollars after Monday’s sales, beating the 1.843 billion racked up by “Titanic,” another Cameron picture, in 1997-1998.
The feat is significant by Hollywood’s standards, given that “Titanic” had held its own for more than a decade, and had gained its spot at the top over a longer period of time. By contrast, “Avatar” broke its record in just over a month since its release.
Also, the numbers do not account for inflation. Inflation adjusted, the 1939 civil war epic “Gone With the Wind” is still historically the highest grossing film ever.
