All Judgments Would Be On Merit: CJP

LAHORE: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has said that all judgments by the courts would be based on merit and the corrupt elements in judiciary must change their practice.

He was addressing the reception arranged by the Lahore Bar Association (LBA) here at Iqbal Auditorium on Saturday night.
Supreme Court Judges, Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman Ramday, Justice M A Shahid Siddiqi, Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharif, District & Session Judge Lahore Mehmood Ahmad Ch, Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan, Hamid Khan advocate, judges of the LHC, Nasira Iqbal President LHC Bar and Zia Abdul Rehman President LBA were also present on the occasion.
CJP said, the movement for independent judiciary during last three years gave the confidence to the people that they would be provided justice as the entire nation struggled for the restoration of judges.
He further said that the National Judicial Policy 2009 was designed after consulting the lawyers and general public, and now it is the key responsibility of the lawyers and judges to implement it.
Referring the duties of district judiciary, CJP said that the members of subordinate judiciary were getting a handsome salary in Punjab and they are responsible to enforce the National Judicial Policy 2009 in its letter and spirit.
“We are not unaware of the mistakes in judiciary and assure you to eliminate the wrong elements from the judiciary”, he added.
The NJP, he said, would be proved successful when the lawyers, leadership and common man will consider that the judgments are being announced on merit and no injustice is being carried out, he observed.
He appreciated the role of young lawyers during the restoration of judges adding that they would safeguard the independence of judiciary, supremacy of constitution and rule of law in this country.
CJP appreciated the services rendered by the Pakistan Army in the northern areas eliminating terrorism and said that the army is fighting to save the nation.
He said that the protection of basic rights is the key responsibility of state and if violated, then we will take action to ensure the rights.
CJP said that new appointments of judges in LHC would strictly be made on merit.
