BAGHDAD: At least nine people were killed when two massive car bombs ripped through Baghdad on Wednesday, including one near the heavily-fortified Green Zone, the interior ministry said.
One car bomb exploded outside the foreign ministry in a residential area close to the Green Zone, killing six people and sending plumes of smoke and dust into the air.
The bomb left a crater three metres (10 feet) deep and 10 metres in diameter, while the walls of the ministry compound in the Salhiyeh district were destroyed and its facade badly damaged.
The other car bomb blew up close to the finance ministry in the northern Baghdad neighbourhood of Waziriyah, killing at least three people, a police official said, requesting anonymity.
Two mortars also landed in the Green Zone — an area of foreign embassies and government offices — while one exploded outside, a security official said.
Yarmuk hospital in west Baghdad said it had received six dead bodies, and was treating more than 70 wounded. Ibn Nafis hospital reported four injured, while Kindi hospital said it had received seven wounded.
