6d76579f87756 l.jpg Brazil fashion week kicks offSAO PAULO: Despite the arrival of some of the biggest names in the fashion and entertainment world, all eyes at the Winter 2011 fashion week that kicks off here are a new runway star: model Lea T.

Representing French brand Givenchy, the Brazilian model has become a rising figure on the global fashion stage thanks to high-profile appearances on the European market in recent months.

Lea T. now returns home to grace the fashion week runway for the first time as a leading figure, promising to be one of the most photographed models at the event in the hands of famed designer Alexandre Herchcovitch.

Latin America”s top fashion event, the 30th, twice annual Sao Paulo Fashion Week promises to showcase 31 home brands, and set the stage for next winter”s collection.

Among the highlights is the runway appearance walk of top model Gisele Bundchen, the Brazilian beauty who has become the world”s top-paid model, who is set to show off the latest creations of the brand Colcci.

Also at the event is US film star Ashton Kutcher, who arrived in the country late Thursday alongwith his actress wife Demi Moore.

“I”m ready for Brazil. Is Brazil is ready for me?” Kutcher wrote on his hugely popular Twitter account ahead of his arrival here.

Billionaire heiress Paris Hilton was also expected to take to the runway to model Brazilian fashion brand Triton, and singer Christina Aguilera was set to attend to promote a new clothing bearing her name.

Sao Paulo, which has held the fashion week since in 1996, has emerged as a key fixture on the fashion calender, showcasing mold-breaking designs from Brazil”s top fashion houses Ellus, Colcci, Maria Bonita, and leading designers such as Herchcovitch, Reinaldo Lourenco and Ronaldo Fraga.

The Brazilian city”s place alongside New York, Paris and Milan as a fashion capital has also demonstrated Brazil”s growing economic power.

Latin America”s biggest economy, ranked 10th in the world, is currently expanding at nine percent on an annual basis — almost as much as the global champion China.

The event meanwhile seeks to also promote Brazil”s lagging textile industry.

The spring 2012 collection will arrive at Sao Paulo”s second fashion week this year held in June, a perennial favorite for showcasing Brazil”s famed bikini beachware.

KARACHI: Pakistani advertisers in the feminine hygiene business have harnessed the political notoriety of WikiLeaks to tell women that while the US State Department might leak, they don’t have to.

Advertising sanitary pads on selected billboards in Pakistan’s financial capital Karachi, the latest catchphrase is: “WikiLeaks… Butterfly doesn’t”.

Leaked American diplomatic cables turned the Internet whistleblower into a household name in Pakistan, fascinating and appalling members of the public over reported inner dealings of their political and military elite.

Pakistani advertisers usually avoid the divisive world of politics but advertisers said the commercial had attracted considerable attention.

“We have received a huge response from the public and everyone has commended us on it,” said Syed Amjad Hussain, head of business development at RG Blue Communications, which pitched the advertisement to manufacturers Butterfly.

“It could have been yet another ad showing a girl promoting the sanitary pad, but we made it different, completely different,” art director Munir Bhatti told AFP.

Hussain said the response had been “great” although a fully-fledged media campaign had yet to start.

Coverage of the leaked American cables highlighted Western concerns about the safety of Pakistan’s nuclear arms and politicians’ private support for US drone attacks on Al-Qaeda and the Taliban in the country’s tribal belt.

They also revealed that the Pakistani army considered forcing out President Asif Ali Zardari, who made contingency plans for his assassination. AGENCIES

100 designers who shaped fashion

NEW YORK: From Adolfo to Yohji Yamamoto, Women”s Wear Daily has recorded the A to Z of fashion over the last 100 years. There are the suffragettes, flappers, career women in pantsuits and, later, miniskirts.

f743ffe884l.gif.gif 100 designers who shaped fashionFashion is an industry that”s always on the hunt for the next big thing. Yet, in researching a new book about a century of style, “WWD 100 Years, 100 Designers,” executive editor Bridget Foley found some constants.

“So many designers, when they talk about their work talk about women first,” Foley says. “There”s an ongoing idea and a belief among the very best designers that you have to push forward, but also that you also always have to consider what women will wear.”

For all the declarations of trends, including hemlines, silhouettes and embellishments, Foley finds that most garments – be they skinny jeans or pencil skirts – are consistently available year after year, even when they”re not winning headlines.

And, she adds, however modern and urban we like to think black is, women have been wearing it – regularly – since the 1920s.

The power of buzz has been around even longer.

Some of the designers included in the book were chosen because they literally changed the shape of fashion: Paul Poiret, Claire McCardell and Christian Dior, among them. But someone such as Gabrielle Chanel (known, of course, as Coco) really created an entire culture around a brand.

A 1965 WWD quote about Chanel: “Chanel is more than a look – it”s an institution – it”s a belief and a way of life – which this clever and very crafty artiste has done. She knows that her ever hungry Fashion Barbies are women and girls who eat and drink and dance – and love.”

Winnowing down this list of most influential designers to 100 was harder than it sounds, especially balancing new talent like Jason Wu against Dior and Oscar de la Renta, Foley says.

“Is this all good fashion?” she wonders. “I’m not sure it’s all good fashion, but it”s all representative fashion, and much of it is really good.”

Others who made the cut: Giorgio Armani, Cristobal Balenciaga, Andre Courreges, Francisco Costa, Calvin Klein, Charles James, Norma Kamali, Laura and Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte, Donna Karan, Madeline Vionnet, and both Gianni and Donatella Versace.
