Omar Abdullah Didn’t Resign But Submitted Conditional letter

Srinagar: Two days after Omar Abdullah resigned as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir following a sensational allegation of his involvement in the 2006 sex scandal, Zeenews has learnt from its sources that Omar didn’t tender his resignation, but had submitted a letter to the Governor which stated if proven guilty he would put in his papers.e57325db94etter Omar Abdullah Didn’t Resign But Submitted Conditional letter

The revelation comes after the reports that Omar had submitted his resignation to the Governor N N Vora after senior PDP MLA Muzzaffar Hussain Beigh had alleged his involvement in the 2006 sex scandal.

The state Assembly witnessed a high drama after the PDP deputy leader’s allegation. PDP has demanded a judicial inquiry in the case, saying that it was not satisfied with the CBI probe.

Meanwhile, hitting back at the PDP, Omar Abdullah today accused its leader Mufti Mohammad Sayeed of “shutting his eyes” to the sex scandal when it first surfaced in 2006 as his own people were involved.

“Sayeed preferred that this scandal should go on and never bothered how callously daughters of Kashmir were being exploited by his own people. He should have resigned at that very time if he would have been real son of soil but he preferred to shut his eyes,” an angry Omar said while addressing supporters at his Gupkar Road residence here.

Omar, who has given a conditional resignation to the state Governor after the accusation, said Sayeed was “scared” that his government would fall as his own men were also “involved” in the scandal which came to light in 2006 after the arrest of a woman.

Omar, however, appreciated the role of former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who handed over probe to the CBI.

“Sayeed in his capacity as Home Minister at the Centre selected Jagmohan as Governor and succeeded in his mission to impose AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) in the state,” Omar alleged, adding it was because of these issues that his father Farooq Abdullah had to resign from the Chief Minister’s post in 1990.

“When PDP ruled the state there was no talk about withdrawal of AFSPA. But today when my government is actually making efforts for its removal, that party is sabotaging the process by directly or indirectly fomenting violence,” he said.

Omar asked both Sayeed and his daughter Mehbooba Mufti to be patient and wait for six years to face people in the next elections. “During the last six years, we have played responsible role of opposition. We never snatched any mike from the Speaker’s podium and allowed the government to run its business in the House. But now PDP has crossed all limits by stooping to a level which has no parallel in political ethics,” he said.

He said it is first time that such a massive financial support has come from the Centre under plan funds. Apart from Rs 5,500 crore being earmarked for the state from plan outlay another package of Rs 1,200 crore has been sanctioned under Prime Minister Reconstruction Plan, he added.

Accusing the CBI of defending Omar Abdullah, senior members of the PDP tore up a letter issued by the CBI in connection with their investigation of the case.

The CBI letter states that neither Chief Minister Omar Abdullah nor Union Minister for Non-Renewable Sources of Energy and Omar’s father Farooq Abdullah is figured in the list of suspects that were involved in the 2006 sex scandal.

Assembly Speaker Akbar Lone confirmed that he had received a communication from the CBI to this effect.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram had said on Tuesday that there was no mention of Omar Abdullah in the CBI list.

Earlier, Jammu and Kashmir Governor N. N. Vohra had refused to accept Omar Abdullah’s resignation, saying that the latter should continue in office till a final decision is taken on the matter.

Abdullah had formally submitted his resignation to Vohra, hours after a senior PDP leader had alleged in the State Assembly that Abdullah was involved in the sex scandal.

PDP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Beigh levelled the allegation that Abdullah was involved. Beigh even traded charges with Farooq Abdullah during a heated television debate on Tuesday night.

Beigh said he had list of names who were involved in the scandal and Abdullah was listed as number 102.

The sex scandal surfaced in 2006 with the arrest of a woman, Sabina, who allegedly claimed during her interrogation that she used to send girls, including minors to politicians, senior policemen and bureaucrats.

Among the 17 people chargesheeted by the CBI are G A Mir and Raman Mattoo, both ministers in the then PDP-led Government, and Mohammed Iqbal Khandey, former Principle Secretary to the then Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed.

SRINAGAR: There was ruckus in the Assembly of Indian occupied Kashmir on Monday with legislators of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) stalling the proceedings by shouting slogans against the Indian government over the Shopian murders.fbcc285cd0peaker Mehbooba Mufti Throws Microphone at Held Kashmir Assembly Speaker

The PDP legislators gathered near the speaker’s podium and Mehbooba Mufti even tried to fling a microphone at the speaker.

The incident occurred after PDP leaders started raising slogans over the Shopian incident in which two women were raped and murdered in May.

Led by party president Mehbooba Mufti, PDP legislators started shouting slogans like “Produce the killers of Shopian” as the assembly session began.

After repeated requests by the speaker failed to restore order, he ordered the dismissal of the PDP MLAs from the floor of the House. The MLAs, however, refused to leave and police officials had to forcibly escort them out of the assembly.

Pandemonium continued in the assembly till the PDP legislators were taken out of the House.

Mehbooba Mufti later accused the Speaker of using “unparliamentarily” language and acting more like a “ruling NC worker” in the House.

Mehbooba Mufti said, “I took on the Speaker as he was ordering PDP MLAs out.”

“We did nothing wrong. Speaker was at fault, she added.

PDP MLAs led by Mehbooba Mufti are now staging a sit-in dharna outside the assembly.

Meanwhile, the bail applications of IoK police officers Javed Iqbal Mattoo and Rohit Baskotra, arrested in connection with the sensational Shopian murder case, will come up for hearing on Monday at a court in Shopian.

The pleas of the two officers were moved on Sunday before the sessions court by senior Supreme Court lawyer Asim Mehrotra who flew into Srinagar to argue the case on behalf of Mattoo and Baskotra.

Mirwaiz Urges Clinton to Push for Kashmir Resolution

SRINAGAR: Indian Kashmir’s top leader urged visiting US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Saturday to push nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan to resolve their dispute over Kashmir.69cf6cb7a9lution Mirwaiz Urges Clinton to Push for Kashmir Resolution

“Kashmir is not a religious issue, it is not an issue of terrorism or extremism, it is a political dispute and the United States has a role to push both India and Pakistan to settle this political dispute,” Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said in a statement.

Mirwaiz is chairman of the All Parties Hurriyat (Freedom) Conference, the volatile region’s main alliance.

His comments came as Clinton kicked off her Indian visit in Mumbai, scene of the attacks last year by militant gunmen that killed 166 people.

India has accused Pakistan of harbouring extremists who allegedly trained, equipped and financed the militants.

After the attacks, India suspended a peace dialogue with Pakistan that, among other issues, sought a resolution of the Kashmir conflict that has dominated bilateral relations since the division of the sub-continent in 1947.

Both countries claim the entire region of Kashmir which is currently divided between them by a Line of Control. A 20-year Muslim insurgency has claimed 47,000 lives in the Indian-administered section.

Peace in South Asia cannot be achieved “without a resolution of core issue of Kashmir,” Mirwaiz said.

Clinton denied Saturday that President Barack Obama’s administration is pressuring India into seeking peace with Pakistan so the latter could focus entirely on beating an Islamist insurgency on its border with Afghanistan, a US priority.

“The US… is very supportive of steps that the governments take but we are not in any way involved in or promoting any particular position,” she told reporters.

After talks Thursday in Egypt with his Pakistani counterpart Yousef Raza Gilani, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said negotiations with Pakistan would remain on hold until Islamabad takes action against the perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks.

Srinagar: The chief minister, Omar Abdullah, Thursday said the cordial meeting between the prime ministers of India and Pakistan had assumed historical import, as both the nations had agreed to de-link dialogue from terrorism.d4e5f78c43terror Omar Abdullah Hails De linking Dialogue From Terror
Omar welcomed the joint statement of the two premiers, saying the success of their meeting at Sharm-al Sheikh was a victory not only of his own stand but of billions of people of sub-continent who strongly believe in peace and abhor violence.
The CM said in the past stray “incidents of terror” had delayed composite dialogue, like the Mumbai attack. He said agreement between the prime ministers to discuss all outstanding issues between the two countries was a positive development, which will lead “all of us towards an era of peace and tranquility and defeat forces having vested interest in violence.”
Omar said that the success of their meeting lies in the fact that both have agreed to work for creating an atmosphere of mutual trust and confidence and promote regional cooperation. “We were waiting for this agreement for long as it will silence forces inimical to peace,” he said, appealing people of the state to gear themselves up “for golden chapter of peace, development and mutual cooperation.”
Omar reiterated that dialogue was the only way to resolve all outstanding issues, and agreement between the two premiers has strengthened this belief further.
The chief minister said that everybody was conscious of the fact that both the countries and Jammu and Kashmir in particular had suffered due to their bickering. “Our economy has collapsed during the past two decades and we are struggling hard to revive the same so that the development of the state is ensured,” he said.
It is a positive development that the two premiers have stressed on development and elimination of poverty.
