KARACHI: Today marks the 26th death anniversary of Sir Chaudhry Muhammad Zafarullah Khan, KCSI. He was a Pakistani diplomat,First Asian President of the International Court of Justice,President of the UN General Assembly, Pakistan’s first foreign minister and a renowned international jurist.
Zafrullah Khan was born on February 6, 1893, in Sialkot, Pakistan, the son of Nasrullah Khan. He graduated from the Government College, Lahore, in 1911. Between 1911 and 1914 he studied at King’s College London and was called to the bar at Lincoln’s Inn.
Returning to India he practised law in Sialkot, until July 1916, and lectured in the Law College, Lahore, during 1919 to 1924, and practised law in Lahore up to 1935.

CJ takes suo moto notice of 40 year old’s lynching in Lahore

LAHORE: Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Choudhry has taken suo moto notice of the lynching of a 40 year old person in Lahore, after allegation of theft, SAMAA reported on Tuesday.
The Chief Justice has ordered Punjab Police’s Inspector General to forward a detailed report of the incident by September 6.
According to a notification issued by the Supreme Court of Pakistan, the Chief Justice has taken suo moto notice after reading a column in a newspaper.
The column of the newspaper described that laborers of a fruit market in Lahore killed a 40 year old unknown person under the assumption that he entered a shop with the intention to snatch fruit.

OGRA increases diesel price, slightly decreases petrol

KARACHI: The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has announced new prices of petroleum products; diesel has been raised and petrol has slightly been decreased, SAMAA reported on Tuesday.
The Executive Director of OGRA, Jawad Nasim, announced new prices of petroleum products in Islamabad on Tuesday.
According to the new prices announced by OGRA, the price of diesel has risen by Rs. 1.57 per liter and the new price is fixed at Rs. 74.60 per liter, while light diesel’s price has been increased by Rs. 1.32 per liter and fixed at Rs. 62.67 per liter.
The price of kerosene oil, after an increase of 72 paisas, is fixed at Rs. 65.57 per liter.
The price of petrol, after being decreased by 48 paisas, is fixed at Rs. 67.26 per liter; the price of hi-octane, after decreasing by 49 paisas, has been fixed at Rs. 69.50 per

Four killed in car accident in Karachi

KARACHI: Four people have died, and two others seriously hurt in a road accident near Sea View, SAMAA reported on Tuesday.
According to details, two speeding vehicles collided on Khayaban-e-Shamsheer; one of the vehicles crushed people standing on the sidewalk.
Four people including two women died on the spot, three others were wounded. The bodies were taken to Jinnah Post-Graduate Medcial Centre and police arrested another two, Muneer and Saad. SAMAA
Named players to miss Pakistan team practice

KARACHI: The three Pakistani cricketers who have been named in a spot-fixing scandal will not practice with their team in Taunton on Tuesday, manager Yawar Saaed said.
“The three will also be meeting with the Pakistan High Commissioner in London on Wednesday,” Saeed told the Geo Super channel.
The three players, test captain, Salman Butt and pace bowlers Muhammad Amir and Muhammad Asif, have been accused by a 35-year-old Pakistani man of taking bribes to fix incidents during the Lord’s test against England last week.
The man, Mazhar Majeed, who was arrested and then released on bail, is accused of trying to defraud bookmakers.
Pakistan play a warm-up match in Taunton on Thursday ahead of two Twenty20 and five one-day internationals against England.

Pietersen looks set to be dropped from England T20 squad

LONDON: Kevin Pietersen is set to be dropped from England’s Twenty20 squad, according to media reports on Tuesday.
Pietersen, part of the Twenty20 World Cup-winning side earlier this year and player of that tournament, wrote briefly on his Twitter account that he was “Done for rest of summer. Man of the World Cup T20 and dropped from the T20 side too.”
The 30-year-old batsman added he had been signed by county club Surrey after leaving Hampshire.
The Twitter message was quickly deleted, with England due to announce later in the day their squads for the Twenty20 internationals against Pakistan which start on Sunday and the five one-dayers that follow.
A spokesman for the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) was not immediately available. A Surrey spokesman had no comment.

KABUL: The withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan from next July will begin with a general ‘thinning out’ of forces rather than any large-scale drawdown, the commander of U.S. and NATO forces said on Tuesday.
Critics say U.S. President Barack Obama’s strategy to begin pulling out troops has backfired, sending a signal to the Taliban that the United States was preparing to wind down at a time when U.S. and NATO forces were suffering record casualties.
It has also alarmed Afghan leaders, a spokesman for President Hamid Karzai last week saying the Taliban threat has not been eliminated and any timeline for withdrawal would only “invigorate” the insurgents.
U.S. commanders have since tried to allay fears the timeline would not represent a wholesale departure.
The withdrawal timetable however is certain to come under close scrutiny in a White House
