51b91a8b07s 1061 Death toll in Uganda landslide hits 106At least 106 people have been killed in a landslide in eastern Uganda following more than a week of heavy rain in the area.

Minister of State for Disasters Mussa Ecweru has told that 300 people are still missing. The landslide engulfed three villages in the Bududa region near Mount Elgon late on Monday, following more than a week of heavy rain in the area.

Police and armed forces are taking part in efforts to find survivors. Officials say the mudslides have destroyed homes, markets, schools, and a health clinic. Unusually heavy rains also battered eastern Uganda in 2007 forcing 2,000 people to evacuate their homes. Nearly 50,000 people have been affected in what humanitarian officials describe as the worst rains in 35 years.
