Earlier today Attorney General Sardar Latif Khan Khosa was quoted as saying that the President has extended the local bodies’ term by Dec. 31, 2009 to achieve a consensus among the ruling allies on the fate of the system.

However, presidential spokesman Farhatullah Baber informed ARY NEWS that the AG stated nothing about the extension of incumbent nazims’ terms ending next month. He said AG’s assertion was misunderstood and taken out of context.

Baber said that the provinces were not empowered to decide the fate of the local bodies, maintaining that the system would be continued till the final decision.

Khosa was further quoted as saying in his talks with the media on Friday that the seventeenth amendment can not be completely annulled, expressing the hope that the Constitutional Reforms Committee would get a consensus on the abolishment of the contentious articles of the amendment.
