Honey baked hams are expensive as anybody who has priced them will know, so producing your personal effortless honey baked ham for the holidays can make sense.
Honey baked ham is often a favorite at holidays. The sweet flavor with the honey compliments the ham and can make a tasty meat even more delicious.
Honey glazing a baked ham is effortless; nonetheless, it may be messy. It is important to line the baking pan (a quite deep 1 as the juices and glaze pool at the bottom) with a number of layers of aluminum foil (or tin foil as they say within the South). Using a single layer of aluminum foil typically signifies that the ham glaze ends up seeping under the foil or that a tiny tear within the foil enables the glaze to wind up like glue on the casserole dish or pan which creates for a actually messy clean up.
Southern Honey Baked Ham Recipe
Ingredients:
* 1 ham – 5 to 10 lb. prebaked (spiral cut ham will work but place cut end down)
* ½ cup butter
* ½ cup brown sugar
* ¼ cup honey
* 1/8 cup pineapple juice or orange juice (can substitute with a light colored soft drink like Sprite or 7-Up)
* ¼ tsp ground cloves
Directions:
1. Prepare pan large enough to hold ham and cooking juices by lining with aluminum foil – three layers minimum for easier clean up.
2. Combine butter, brown sugar, honey, liquid (juice or soft drink), and cloves in a double boiler or in a heavy sauce pan sprayed with non-stick Pam. Heat on low until butter is melted and sauce is evenly mixed.
3. Place ham in foil lined pan and brush with warm glaze.
4. Turn oven to 325 degrees F and place ham in oven.
5. Brush on additional warm glaze (can be kept on very low heat or in a fondue pot to keep thin enough to spread on ham). Do this every 15 minutes or so.
6. Bake for around an hour to an hour and a half depending on the size and type of ham. Check directions on ham package for a better idea on exact cooking times as times do vary on types and sizes of hams.
7. If the sauce is not browned to perfection when ham is done, turn on broiler and heat for a few minutes until glaze caramelizes. Watch close and do not burn glaze.
8. Let rest for 10 minutes, slice, and serve.
Note: This honey ham can also be done in a crock pot. Again, line the pan (crock) well with tin foil. Cook on low for approximately 5 hours and baste every ½ hour or so. Can put carrots under ham for a lift and for a tasty side dish or add pineapple slices the last hour on top ofthe ham.
