b03148ad2es axis NASA:Chile Quake Knocked Earth Off Its AxisNational Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) reported that the Chile Earthquake knocked earth off its axis, saying that length of the earth day (the time it takes for the Earth to spin once in its orbit around the sun) was shortened by 1.26 microseconds.
The earthquake, which struck earlier this week in Chile and measured 8.8 on the Richter scale, has supposedly moved the Earth about 3 inches (8 centimetres) off its axis of rotation. That might not sound like much for a planet roughly 30,000 miles in circumference but it definitely got the scientists, physicists and astronomers a bit worried. The change in the axis is perhaps not surprising considering the earth is travelling so quickly in orbit around the sun. The 8.8 Richter earthquake that so devastatingly hit Chile earlier this week can be compared to the ringing of an earth sized bell. The reverberations were bound to have an effect on the rotation and axis.
