NRO Case Hearing Underway

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan News: Supreme Court (SC) 17-member larger bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry continued hearing of the petitions against National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) on Monday.
The details of Swiss case and the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) report on Asif Zardari’s foreign assets and expenditures were presented to the court.
Moreover, Article 248 of the constitution has been challenged in Supreme Court today. The article exempts the President to appear before courts in cases.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry in his remarks during the hearing said the hearing will be completed today.
The court also granted the plea of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to be party in the NRO case.
During the proceedings, the CJ, in his remarks, asked the Federation as to how the ruling is going to affect the democracy in the country. The court asked government if it feared the judgment of the case will cause any threat to democracy.
The Chief Justice said the court wants protection of democracy.
