ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan started hearing the NRO case as PM Gilani arrived in the court on Thursday, TrendPK reports.
It is only the second time that the court has initiated contempt proceedings against a sitting prime minister, plunging Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani’s weak government deeper into a crisis that could force early elections within months.
Flanked by his counsel Former Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leadler Aitzaz Ahsan, PM Gilani appeared before a 7-member bench headed by Justice Nasirul Mulk.
The hearing is being held at the courtroom-4.
The bench comprises Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, Justice Sarmad Jalal Usmani, Justice Aijaz Afzal Khan, Justice Aijaz Chaudhry, Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Athar Saeed.
The highest court summoned Gilani to explain his refusal to ask Switzerland to re-open graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari waived under NRO.
Supreme Court judges have six options on how to proceed which include finding Gilani in contempt, disqualifying the prime minister and president, and holding early elections. TrendPK
