Skardu river flooded again
GILGIT: Another flood torrent entered River Skardu after lightning struck the mountainous areas of Baltistan, causing smalls streams and nullahs to flow in high tide, Geo News reported Monday.
Tributaries like River Shakar and River Shaug as well as River Indus are flooded in Skardu Baltistan.
According to Hazrat Mir Chief officer of Met Department, water with 295,000 cusecs is passing through River Indus at Skardu. Hunza River and Gilgit River embrace River Indus at Bonji, where water level is at 450,000 cusecs.
River Indus is joined by other nullahs and streams from Kohistan to Basham and from Partab Bridge to Challas, where water level mounted to 500,000 cusecs.
The recent lashing downpours severely damaged roads, bridges and private properties in District Skardu and Ghanche. While, various link roads including Gilgit-Skardu Road are closed for a week now.
The prolonged closure of Karakoram Highway led to the acute shortage of petroleum products and eatables in Skardu.
The rising water in River Indus at Raikot Bridge in Diamer, affected Laiser village, situated at the bank of the river; while, low-lying areas in the city and its abutting areas are water-logged.
The water from the high tide in River Indus in Kohistan entered the houses of Komela, situated near the bank of the river, washing away over 20 houses.
