Rule 5 draft at the winter meetings
Rule 5 draft updates :- The Royals released first baseman/designated hitter Mike Jacobs and left-handed reliever John Bale on Thursday morning prior to the Rule 5 Draft at the winter meetings.
Neither move was unexpected after the club failed in efforts to trade both players. Jacobs and Bale were each eligible for arbitration and deemed too expensive to retain.
Jacobs, 29, made $3.25 million last season when he batted just .228 with 19 homers and 61 RBIs in 128 games after arriving from Florida in an off-season trade for reliever Leo Nuñez.
Bale, 35, made $1.2 million while going 0-1 with a 5.72 ERA in 43 relief appearances. He spent much of the last three seasons on the disabled list after signing with the Royals as a free agent in December 2006 after pitching three years in Japan.
The moves left the Royals with two vacancies on their 40-man roster, which permitted them the option of exercising the fourth overall pick in the Rule 5 Draft.
The Royals, like all clubs, face an 11 p.m. deadline Saturday for offering contracts to players. Catcher John Buck is viewed as a likely non-tender candidate because he is eligible for arbitration after making $2.9 million.
