Lagaan in Time Magazine’s Top 25 Best Sports Movies
Aamir Khan’s first production Lagaan which won an Oscar nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category has brought us glory once again.
Lagaan has been included in Time magazine’s 25 Best Sports movies list. Time magazine has given Lagaan the 14th spot in their list.
The 2001 film was the biggest hit of that year. Produced by Aamir and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, Lagaan tells the story set in the Victorian
period of India’s colonial British Raj and revolves around the peasants from a barren village who are oppressed by high taxes imposed by their rulers, who
challenge their British rulers to a game of cricket in order to escape their taxes- ‘Lagaan’ for three years.
“From the thunderclap in the first torrential rainstorm, a cue for riotous dancing to the climactic sunlight on the smiling faces of millions of viewers,
this Bollywood epic is cause for joy of meteorological proportions,” the magazine says, calling the film “the longest and most enthralling underdog-sports
movie ever”.
“Even those who know none of cricket’s complicated rules will bounce in their seats to AR Rahman’s irrepressible tunes; here, one can immediately and fully
accept the Bollywood trope of music and dance as an expression of life’s deepest, most soaring emotions. As sports film, social document or communal ecstasy,
Lagaan is the all-time all-rounder,” it added.
Lagaan is the only Indian movie in the list, which is topped by The Big Lebowski (1998). Body And Soul (1947), Breaking Away (1979),
Bull Durham (1988) and Caddyshack (1980).
Aamir’s Khan threw impulsive bash to celebrate Delhi Belly’s success
Aamir Khan broke free of his three years of no drinking rule on Friday night …actually Saturday morning, when he threw an unscheduled impromptu party for the spectacular opening of his production Delhi Belly at his residence in Bandra.
Yes, Aamir can be unrehearsed and spontaneous too, if he wants. He proved it on Friday night with his impulsive decision to have a party and an even more impulsive decision to drink after staying away from alcohol for three years.
Says an invitee at the party, “Yes, Aamir suddenly decided to host a party for all the cast and crew of Delhi Belly at his residence. He drank for the first time in three years. Aamir had champagne and Bacardi. We were all surprised when he phoned us to come over to his house post midnight on Friday evening. We thought it’d just be a small and brief celebration for the delightful opening of our film. But the celebration went on until morning. We left at 4 am.”
Significantly the film’s official director Abhinay Deo was missing from the bash. Apparently Abhinay is in London. More importantly the Delhi Belly writer Akshat Verma who, to everyone’s surprise, has been billed as the film’s associate director in the credit titles, was openly and wholeheartedly thanked by Aamir for his contribution to Delhi Belly.
Says the invitee, “Yes, Aamir thanked everyone. But it was Akshat whom he thanked first of all. And that was not a coincidence. We could see Aamir wanted to make public Akshat’s contribution to Delhi Belly.” While every member of the Delhi Belly cast had a blast.
YRF to cast a fresh face as the female lead for Dhoom 3
Ever since it was announced Yash Raj Films’ Dhoom 3 has been the talk of the town. The biggest news was when YRF announced the presence of Aamir Khan in the film along with Dhoom regulars Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra. While the male cast has been locked, there has been a lot of speculation about who the female lead would be?
While many top names were being floated around, YRF has now decided to refute all rumours once and for all and has officially announced that for Dhoom 3 they are looking out for a fresh face for the female lead.
Apparently producer Aditya Chopra and director Vijay Krishna Acharya are keen to cast a totally new face to play the female lead role in the movie and the hunt for a fresh face begins now.
Filming of Dhoom 3 starts around end of 2011 and the film is slated for a 2012 Christmas release worldwide.
Priyadarshan is set to make film on subject of AIDS with Aamir Khan
Aamir Khan will be doing a stark real-time film on AIDS with the prolific Priyadarshan, probably at the end of the year. Priyan who has worked with the other two Khan superstars, Shah Rukh and Salman, met Aamir who has given his verbal approval for the project.
Priyan’s other Hindi project Tezz is now on hold. The large-budget action thriller featuring Ajay Devgn, Anil Kapoor, Sunil Shetty, Kangna Ranaut, Tusshar Kapoor and Zayed Khan is waiting for the sun to shine on its fate…quite literally. The makers are waiting for the sun to come out in Scotland where the rest of the film is to be shot.
Explains Priyan, “About 40 percent of the film remains to be shot. I will complete it in one stretch in Scotland. But we cannot shoot it before summer when the sun comes out. I hope to complete and release Tezz by year-end.”
Provided Devgn has the dates.
“So for now I’m back in Kerala writing a Malayalam film. It a comedy with my favourite actor Mohanlal called The Arab Camel & Madhavan Nair to be shot in Abu Dhabi,” informs Priyan.
The comedy will also be made in Hindi.
Abu Dhabi has a large Malyali population. Says Priyan, “Even the traffic cops and taxi drivers in Abu Dhabi speak Malayalam. I haven’t directed a Malayalam film in seven years, so I’m very excited.”
For now Priyan has gone back to Kerala and his roots in Malayalam cinema. And is very happy about it.
Says the director, “I haven’t gone to Mumbai for three months. I was getting very uncomfortable with what was required of me in Mumbai. Now I’ll return only to complete Tezz and to direct the AIDS film with Aamir Khan.”
Aamir has heard and liked Priyan’s idea. Says the director, “I met Aamir and narrated my idea. He loved it. I now need to complete the script.”
The film on AIDS will have no songs, no comedy and no commercial trappings at all. It’s likely to be produced by Aamir.
In fact the only comedy that Priyan is committed to doing is the sequel to Malaamal Weekly for Percept Pictures. Entitled Malaamal Robbery it will be about a group of people robbing a bank only to discover it has no money.
“But no more comedies like De Dana Dan for me,” promises Priyadarshan.
Katrina Kaif signed up for Dhoom 3, Aamir Khan to take profit share?
The news of Aamir Khan being roped in to play the villain in Dhoom 3 was a rage last week. However, the big question since then has been, who will be signed as the lead actress opposite him. Though a number of names were being tossed around by the media, trendpk.com has learnt from its sources that Katrina Kaif will be playing the female lead in Dhoom: 3.

Katrina, who is currently doing YRF’s Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, has beaten the other contenders to clinch the role.
Though the rest of the cast, namely Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra remains unchanged, Aamir and Katrina’s addition to the cast certainly heats things up. Considering the chemistry between Aamir and Katrina, the duo has put all questions to rest, with their photographic rendition of the classic film Pyaasa that garnered positive response from fans and industry folk alike.
trendpk.com has also learnt from its sources that Aamir won’t be charging his usual fee for D: 3. Instead, he will have a stake in the profits of the film. To be precise Aamir will have a total of 33% stake in the profits of the film. This will be the first time that YRF has permitted such sharing. However, though this may be a first for the production house, Aamir has cut down his share from the usual 40% that he had for the film 3 Idiots.
When we contacted, Rafiq Gangjee from YRF replied, “The casting for the girls of Dhoom: 3 has not started. Also, YRF does not discuss artist contracts and agreements.”
While Aamir’s publicist said, “The 33% profit sharing ratio is not true, besides we do not have any profit sharing ratio with YRF as such. While on the remuneration i will not comment.”
While Yash Raj Films refrains to comment on this, we can safely bet that with Katrina being signed on for Dhoom: 3, and Aamir adding another shade to the film with his talent, the high octane torque film promises to be more than just fast bikes.
Hot Buzz: Latest gupshup from tinsel town
There are whispers that Kiran Rao is planning an international cut of DHOBI GHAT for countries/markets where Hindi films don’t get released, but the news is unfounded. Kiran has denied the rumors to this writer.

There’s tremendous speculation that Madhur Bhandarkar has approached Priyanka Chopra to essay the main role in HEROINE, after Kareena Kapoor decided against doing the film. However, the news is untrue.
Rumors are rife that UTV and Anees Bazmee’s THANK YOU, slated for release on 8 April, will not make it on that date. But UTV’s Siddharth Roy Kapur denies the news. “8 April is the date, no change of plans,” he says.
Big B lends voice to Aamir Khan Productions’ Delhi Belly

Not too long ago, the media was rife with tussle between the ‘perfectionist’ Aamir Khan and the stalwart of Bollywood Amitabh Bachchan, over the latter’s film Black. When everything seemed lost, there was an olive branch extended and Bachchan and Aamir once again became close friends. Now Bachchan Sr. will be lending his voice to Aamir Khan Productions’ forthcoming film Delhi Belly.
One may recall, Amitabh Bachchan, had lent the voice earlier too for Aamir Khan’s first home production Lagaan.
Couple of days ago, Aamir and Kiran were seen visiting Amitabh Bachchan on sets of a film where he was shooting. After a long closed door meeting and catching up, they left almost after two hours. And yesterday morning Amitabh Bachchan dubbed in a suburban studio for Delhi Belly.
Bachchan’s voice-over will also be heard in the first trailer of Delhi Belly that will be attached with Dhobi Ghat on Jan 21. The said piece will be an introductory piece and what’s interesting is that Aamir has written the piece.
Aamir has been concentrating and working diligently with Abhinav Deo the director on the final edit of Delhi Belly.
Delhi Belly stars Imran Khan, Kunal Roy Kapur and Vir Das in lead roles.
Rani Mukherjee and Kareena Kapoor to star opposite Aamir in Reema Kagti’s film

Ever since it was announced, Excel Entertainment and Aamir Khan Productions’ film starring Aamir Khan and directed by Reema Kagti has been in the news. There were speculations all the while as to who the lucky two heroines would be who would be paired opposite Aamir in this suspense flick. Now the suspense (pun intended) is over and it’s none other than Rani Mukherjee and Kareena Kapoor who have been signed on for this ambitious project.
This is the first time that Aamir, Rani and Kareena will be starring in the same film and it’s indeed a casting coup for sure. It may be recalled that Rani starred opposite Aamir early in her career in the smash-hit Ghulam and was even part of the historical Mangal Pandey -The Rising. Bebo meanwhile was Aamir’s co-star in last year’s blockbuster 3 Idiots.
Now with the trio coming together for this project, things are only going to get hotter in the days to come.
The real story behind Aamir’s first ever suspense drama

The audience has been caught unaware, the trade is surprised, the industry is amazed and the detractors shocked. Aamir Khan, whose last release (3 Idiots) was close to a year back, hadn’t signed a film for ages. In fact work on 3 Idiots had begun more than two and a half years ago and ever since then, there were speculations galore around what would he do next. The feelers were from all over in fact. There were talks about Yash Chopra, Karan Johar and Vidhu Vinod Chopra lining up projects for him to pick and choose. And we are talking only about top of the top brass here.
However, Aamir ended up opting for the one film old Reema Kagti who had found critical appreciation as well as reasonable commercial success with her debut outing Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd, a quirky comedy. With Aamir Khan though, she is taking an altogether different route by scripting a suspense drama.
Says a veteran insider, “Now that’s a first for Aamir because in his career spanning over two decades, Aamir has never – that’s right, never – worked in a suspense drama. Known mostly for his romantic or at times dramatic or action ventures, Aamir has been rapidly switching genres in the last five years. After playing a college student in 3 Idiots, working in a mature dramatic outing with an element of suspense to it sounds like quite a move by Aamir.”
This wasn’t the first script that Reema had presented to Aamir though. She in fact had an altogether different subject in mind and had approached Aamir to work on it a few months back.
“When I first got into a conversation with Aamir, it was for a different subject altogether”, reveals Reema who meanwhile also wrote Hrithik Roshan-Katrina Kaif starrer Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara for close friend and colleague Zoya Akhtar, “It was then decided to pick a different subject and build it on further. It definitely sounded interesting and I bided my time, got this script in place for the new subject, and approached Aamir again.”
Given the fact that Aamir is known for his ‘active contribution’ to the projects that he consents to; did the famed ‘improvisation’ affect her script as well? After all there are still a few more weeks to go and there could be possible changes in script that could come her way.
“No, Aamir didn’t suggest any changes there. In fact what I presented to Aamir stays the way it was designed”, Reema confirms.
She goes on add on a parting note, “Whatever few changes that have actually come in, they are entirely based on what I thought would make the drama more tout. The script has only become far more firm and crisp now.”
A joint production of Farhan Akhtar-Ritesh Sidhwani and Aamir Khan, this yet untitled film would commence shooting in February 2011 and would be ready for release by year end.
