ede187abb6os 421 celtics bostonBOSTON — There’s no official metric for it and there likely never will be. But there’s an unspoken statistical category in the NBA some have dubbed “WIM,” an abbreviation for, “Wants it more.”

This is WIM in a nutshell: A ball springs off the rim directly above two players. Both have an equal shot at it — athletic prowess notwithstanding — but only one player can come down with it.

The player who gets it? That’s a tick in the WIM column. And it’s no surprise that there’s a strong correlation between WIMs and wins.
The Celtics scored 21 of the first 27 points in their 94-71 Game 3 Eastern Conference final victory over the Magic. They led by double digits nearly the entire game, using that game-opening run to suffocate the life out of a Magic team whose desire was sputtering from the opening tip.2431569baeltics2 celtics boston” height=”500″ />

They seized the moment with the same energy that allowed them to take the first two games in Orlando while the Magic reacted with shock and apathy.

The series had taken a Conan O’Brien-type hiatus between Games 2 and 3, giving the Celtics 72 hours to either bask in their accomplishments from the first two games or focus on closing out the series.

The last time this three-day break happened between Games 2 and 3 the Celtics paraded into practice after a day off, hardly taking Rivers’s warnings of complacency seriously. Kendrick Perkins and Kevin Garnett missed practice with injuries. The rest of the squad practiced as a separated bunch, some convinced Cleveland would return in Game 3 with a vengeance while others convinced the Celtics’ Game 2 statement was enough to carry them through the series.
Coach Doc Rivers, reported to be leaning toward resigning by the Boston Herald’s Steve Bulpett, calmed the waters with a non-denial denial, saying he would just think about it, as he always does.

In other words, Rivers was giving it a last shot, what there was left of him.

(When I saw Doc 10 days ago, I asked him if his next birthday would be his 75th. He laughed.)

Celtics fans abandoned ship en masse, led by ESPN.com’s Bill Simmons, fuming at their “decrepit, non-rebounding, poorly coached, dispirited, excuse-making, washed-up sham of a contender.”

Women’s Day at the White House

75a60c11cb74x300 Women’s Day at the White HouseUpdate News: President Obama, invoking the marital dictum that a husband will never get in trouble for saying that his wife is smarter, honored International Women’s Day on Monday by, first of all, poking fun at himself.

Many accomplished women, like his wife, Michelle Obama, the president said, have probably looked across the dinner table at their husbands and thought, “I’m smarter than that guy.”

After getting the requisite laughter, Mr. Obama moved on to the main thrust of the event, to commend the accomplishments and challenges facing women.

Mr. and Mrs. Obama held a short ceremony at the White House to honor women, with Mr. Obama promising to keep supporting efforts to empower women in the United States and around the world.

Surrounded by all manner of women for the East Room event (the “American Idol” crooner Katherine McPhee, the actress Kerry Washington, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright), Mr. Obama took particular note of his secretary of state, Hillary Rodham Clinton, commending her for putting “millions of cracks in America’s glass ceiling.”

Mr. Obama spoke of his own daughters, Sasha and Malia. “I think about the world that they, and all of America’s daughters, will inherit,” he said. “And I think about all of the opportunities that are still beyond reach for too many young women and too many of our brothers and sisters — too many of our sisters and mothers and aunts, all of the glass ceilings that have yet to be shattered.”

Send in The Clowns

Send in the Clowns: Send in the Clowns Lyrics and Youtube – It’s hard to 7721a00835clowns2 Send in The Clownsbelieve that, three months ago, Australian national politics was (primarily) a contest between two broadly normal political parties. The government was running well ahead, but open to criticism for having talked a lot and done relatively little. The opposition was excessively keen on the maxim ‘the first duty of an opposition is to oppose’, and the alternative policies it proposed were neither as detailed as they might be, nor entirely consistent, but that has always been true of oppositions.

Although a change of government in 2010 looked unlikely, there was nothing to suggest that such an event would be a disaster if it happened.

That could not be said today. The government is much the same as before, but the opposition has become a clown show, happy to do or say whatever comes to mind, either to chase votes, secure the support of its base or simply to muddy the waters enough that they have a chance to win in the resulting confusion.

Relay for Life Chairperson Traci Froelich said this year Relay will focus on family fun with a theme of a three-ring circus while raising money to fight cancer. She lost a close friend to cancer, but her grandmother’s recent diagnosis of cancer made the battle even more personal, she said.

“I’ve always been involved with Relay because I believe in it, but it became a lot more personal,” Froelich said. “No one should be without hope. We just need to join together and do our parts so this disease can be gone.”

Barnaby Joyce has copped a bit of flak for this, most notably for the fiasco at the Press Club. But Abbott himself is just as guilty as witness his claim that NZ, which didn’t have much of a stimulus package, is doing as well, economically, as Australia. This is obviously false, but that didn’t stop Abbott making the claim or getting, broadly speaking, a free pass on it.

So far, the clown show has been at least a partial success in political terms. This is not all that surprising – at any time, much of the public is disengaged from politics and welcomes a bit of entertainment. And, with this level of disengagement, it takes a long time for the fact that a political party has taken leave of its senses to percolate through the public consciousness, as witness the recent successes of the US Republicans, despite their catastrophic mismanagement in office. So, there is no guarantee that this clown show will lose the next election. But, with luck, the long term good sense of the Australian public will come into play before then.

How To Impress A Girl

February 8, 2010 by

8f837682efa girl How To Impress A GirlImpress a Girl , how to kiss, how to ask a girl out, how to kiss a girl, how to get pregnant, how to impress a guy, Ever wonder why so many women adore Brad Pitt or Johnny Depp? No? Well go figure, that’s because it’s freaking obvious. They’re famous, sexy and rich. Chances are that you, on the other hand, are neither famous or rich, in fact, even your good looks haven’t gotten you anywhere lately.

But what if I told you that you can learn how to impress a girl even if you aren’t that rich or famous? Well brace yourself, because I’m going to share with you one of the most powerful insights into the mechanisms of attraction you’re going to learn.

Before I do that, though, let’s take a closer look at our “obvious” observation: the fact is, I’ve seen rich guys try to impress girls with their possessions and fail horribly – they either come off as posers or become “best friends”. Fame and money are fleeting, and you know it. While they last, they’re (at best) indicators for the character traits women seek in men. And you can fare wonderfully with the attributes nobody will ever take from you: find your personal value and play your cards right with it.

Now here’s the killer: men are are attracted physically, women are attracted emotionally. Spelled out, this mans that while us men are attracted to looks first, women often go for emotional impressions. Bear in mind that I’m generalizing here and of course, both looks and personality count for both sexes, so don’t become a dirty slob in torn clothes now. But do realize that your qualification standards are not necessarily the same as a woman’s.

Rich men tend to be successful. Successful men are usually strong, competent, determined and reliable. Men with those traits are attractive: they have a direction in life and create the means to get there. How about you? Do you have something you’re passionate about? Everybody does, you know. Go get it! Be enthusiastic about it. Ask any woman if she’s attracted if a man has that sparkle in his eye while talking about something he loves, and she’ll confirm. Don’t become preachy though: and you’re not there to convert her.

Chances are you’ve achieved quite a few things in life. Search yourself and make a list of your accomplishments (exclude your gaming high scores from it). Feels good, huh? You’re not so bad! Now you can use that confidence: when you’re with a girl, drop these things into the conversation. Slowly reveal bits and pieces about you – and don’t make a huge fuss about it. “Yeah, it’s a bit like that time I ran my own photo exhibition at the Main Center.” Hey, if you can mention that just in passing, what else do you have up your sleeve? She’ll be impressed.

Note, though, that you want to play your cards right. Rubbing your awesomeness in her face in the first 15 minutes isn’t being impressive, it’s trying to impress. Doesn’t work. I saw two guys at an amateur filmmaker party: one was all too eager to show off his DSLR and commonplace technical knowledge. The other had a confident calm about him, he knew perfectly well what he could do. He would occasionally reveal bits about himself and the rest of the time, he’d show genuine interest in the people around him. He ended up with two girls in his arms, the other went home empty-handed way before the party was over.

SNL Obama Accomplishments

News from SNL Obama Accomplishments, “SNL” took its first serious swipe at President Barack Obama on Saturday in a skit that offered a harsh critique of his accomplishments since assuming the oval office.

“There are those on the right who are angry. They think that I’m turning this great country into something that resembles the Soviet Union or Nazi Germany, but that’s just not the case,” declared Fred Armisen in his popular role of Obama. “Because when you look at my record it’s very clear what I’ve done so far and that is nothing. Nada. Almost one year and nothing to show for it.”

During the comedy bit, a checklist of accomplishments was displayed that had “NOT DONE” marked off next to many of the notable campaign promises made by Obama, including: closing Guantanamo Bay, getting out of Iraq, improving the status of the fight in Afghanistan, health care reform, global warming, immigration reform, gays in the military, limits on executive powers and torture prosecutions.

Ufc 101 fight card and Ufc 101 date

3fa28e517350x250 Ufc 101 fight card and Ufc 101 dateUfc 101 fight card and Ufc 101 date, From the moment he stepped in the octagon for the first time, BJ Penn was a known commodity, so talented he earned a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt in three years, so gifted that he’d won the equivalent of the jiu-jitsu world championship just weeks after his black belt ceremony despite competing against lifelong devotees. His reputation was such in the BJJ world that mixed martial arts fans had debated, analyzed and speculated about this wunderkind before he’d ever had a single MMA match. And when he finally debuted, it was not on a regional show like most, but in the UFC.

Contrast that with his UFC 101 opponent Kenny Florian. He entered the world of MMA with no fanfare, was thought to be a major underdog on his season of The Ultimate Fighter, and even after making it to the finals, he was never expected to amount to much. Fighting at 185 pounds, the former collegiate soccer player seemed outsized, outclassed and out of his element.

Yet somehow, their paths are converging Saturday night at the Wachovia Center. Such is the beauty of sports. Such is the beauty of MMA.

Despite Florian’s constant record of success in beating the odds, from talking to a horde of MMA reporters here covering the event, it’s safe to say some things haven’t changed: Florian is still a big underdog (in Las Vegas, Penn is around a -240 favorite).

The conventional wisdom is that Penn is better in every aspect of the game than Florian; the better boxer, grappler, better in scrambles, etc. So then, the thinking goes, how can Florian possibly win?

In discussing this with FIGHT! Magazine editor-in-chief Donovan Craig earlier this week, he mentioned UFC 76. And why is that relevant? UFC 76 was probably the last time the top two matches on a UFC pay-per-view were thought to be so one-sided. Yet, what happened that night? Both underdogs won (Keith Jardine beat Chuck Liddell, and Forrest Griffin beat Shogun Rua).

In MMA, underdogs win. Not all the time, but they win. Rua was the last underdog to win in a main event or co-main event of a UFC pay-per-view when he knocked out Liddell at UFC 97.

But if any fighter has a chance of scoring an upset, it’s Florian. How can you discount a guy who was never expected to be a factor in the UFC but has earned a second shot at the belt? Sure, he hasn’t faced the overall caliber of opponent that Penn has, but you can’t ignore his impressive six-fight winning streak, nor the fact that he finished five of those opponents. You also shouldn’t underestimate his secret weapon: his brain.

Florian is one of the most strategic fighters in MMA. For all the attention we give to someone’s ground skills (Demian Maia, for example) or their head kicks (Mirko Cro Cop) or their crushing right hand (Dan Henderson), we constantly fail to take into account a fighter’s intelligence. Few study the game and their opponents like Florian. You can bet he will come into the cage with a complete understanding of Penn’s tendencies and abilities. That’s not to say he can stop what’s coming, only that he probably has a better idea of what’s coming than most. And this being GI Joe opening weekend, we need not remind you that “knowing is half the battle.”

The other half will be fascinating. For all his accomplishments, Penn is just 4-4 in his last eight fights. Those losses are to elite-level fighters Lyoto Machida, Georges St. Pierre (twice) and Matt Hughes. We’re about to find out if Florian is an elite-level fighter. Maybe he’ll get blown out, but maybe not. He came into the UFC as an afterthought. He could leave the cage Saturday night as a champion.
