NEW DELHI: Shoaib Malik’s brother-in-law Imran Zafar Malik reiterated Tuesday that no nikah had ever happened between Pakistani cricketer and Indian girl Ayesha Siddiqi.

He was speaking to a battery of media persons along with Shoaib’s counsel Ramesh Gupta after arriving in New Delhi.

The legal procedures of the alleged ‘nikah’ were not carried out, he said, adding that how could it be done without the identification of the girl.

Malik said nobody else had the ‘nikahnama’ except Siddiqi family while it was also not registered in Pakistan.

To a question, he said that he had twice visited Indian city of Hyderabad Deccan, where Ayesha had introduced herself as Maha.

She told me that Ayesha had to leave for Saudi Arabia on a sudden visit. Had I met the girl at that time, this situation could have been prevented, he remarked.

Answering a question, he said: “We have confidence in Indian law.”

Speaking on this occasion, Shoaib counsel Ramesh Gupta ruled out the possibility of arrest of Pakistani cricketer.

Rule 5 draft at the winter meetings

Rule 5 draft updates :- The Royals released first baseman/designated hitter Mike Jacobs and left-handed reliever John Bale on Thursday morning prior to the Rule 5 Draft at the winter meetings.

Neither move was unexpected after the club failed in efforts to trade both players. Jacobs and Bale were each eligible for arbitration and deemed too expensive to retain.

Jacobs, 29, made $3.25 million last season when he batted just .228 with 19 homers and 61 RBIs in 128 games after arriving from Florida in an off-season trade for reliever Leo Nuñez.

Bale, 35, made $1.2 million while going 0-1 with a 5.72 ERA in 43 relief appearances. He spent much of the last three seasons on the disabled list after signing with the Royals as a free agent in December 2006 after pitching three years in Japan.

The moves left the Royals with two vacancies on their 40-man roster, which permitted them the option of exercising the fourth overall pick in the Rule 5 Draft.

The Royals, like all clubs, face an 11 p.m. deadline Saturday for offering contracts to players. Catcher John Buck is viewed as a likely non-tender candidate because he is eligible for arbitration after making $2.9 million.
