LONDON: England captain Andrew Strauss called on the International Cricket Council (ICC) to leave “no stone unturned” in their probe into cricket corruption after his side ended a scandal-marred season with a one-day series win over Pakistan here on Wednesday.

“This summer has clearly demonstrated when there is a sniff of something in the air it devalues the whole game and nobody wants to play cricket in those circumstances,” Strauss told a news conference after the end of a tour mired in ‘fixing’ allegations.

England thrashed Pakistan by 121 runs in the fifth and final one-dayer at the Rose Bowl for a 3-2 series win after Pakistan had fought back to 2-2 from 2-0 down.

Eoin Morgan, Strauss’s Middlesex team-mate, was named man-of-the-match for his unbeaten 107 in a total of 256 for six.

BANGKOK: A grenade exploded early Friday on a street in central Bangkok, leaving one person seriously hurt in the latest violence in the Thai capital, still recovering from deadly protests, officials said.

The grenade was put in a plastic rubbish bag and dropped in Rangnam road near a duty-free shopping centre, police said. The injured person was a Thai man in his 30s who was searching for scrap.

“It was a hand grenade… The pin was removed and a rubber band wrapped around it,” Police Major General Vichai Sangparpai told local television.

The unnamed victim was seriously hurt and still in hospital, according to Bangkok”s Erawan emergency centre.

“His condition is serious as he sustained wounds all over his body,” an Erawan official said.

The blast came less than a week after a small bomb exploded at a Bangkok bus stop, killing one person and injuring 10 in an attack that rekindled tensions in the capital two months after the end of bloody street protests.

No one has claimed responsibity for either blast.

BANGKOK: Thailand said Tuesday that it was lifting a state of emergency in three northern provinces but not in Bangkok, two months after the end of mass anti-government protests in the capital.

The cabinet decided to revoke the decree in Lampang, Roi Et and Sakon Nakhon provinces, said deputy government spokesman Supachai Jaismut.

The emergency law, which bans public gatherings of more than five people and gives security forces the right to detain suspects for 30 days without charge, will remain in place in 16 other provinces.

LOS ANGELES: Veteran TV broadcaster Larry King announced his decision to step down from his long-running show Tuesday, ending a record-breaking career that saw him conduct more than 40,000 interviews.

King, 76, said in a statement his signature show “Larry King Live” would go off the air in the autumn after 25 years, allowing him to find “more time for my wife and I to get to the kids little league games.”

King”s marriage to seventh wife Shawn Southwick recently appeared to be on the rocks, with the wiry anchorman filing for divorce in April before a reconciliation between the couple, according to reports.

King, one of the most recognizable figures on US television, said he still plans to work for channel after the end of his nightly show, which has been the subject of intense speculation for months following falling ratings.

“I”ll still be a part of the channel family, hosting several Larry King specials on major national and international subjects,” he said.

The interviewer said he was proud of the fact that his show had recently entered the Guinness Book of World Records for having the longest running show with the same host in the same time slot.

“With this chapter closing I”m looking forward to the future and what my next chapter will bring, but for now it”s time to hang up my nightly suspenders,” he said, referring to his trademark attire.

Obama: world must act, not just talk on nuclear security

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama warned Tuesday that the world must act, not simply talk about securing nuclear materials that extremists could fashion into a bomb to kill hundreds of thousands of people.

In excerpts of remarks he was due to make to a 47-nation nuclear security summit, Obama said leaders must make a historic decision to safeguard their people from what he billed as the world”s greatest security threat.

“Two decades after the end of the Cold War, we face a cruel irony of history, the risk of a nuclear confrontation between nations has gone down, but the risk of a nuclear attack has gone up,” Obama said in the excerpts.

“Terrorist networks such as al-Qaeda have tried to acquire the material for a nuclear weapon, and if they ever succeed, they would surely use it.

“Were they to do so, it would be a catastrophe for the world causing extraordinary loss of life, and striking a major blow at global peace and stability.

“Today is an opportunity, not simply to talk, but to act.

“Not simply to make pledges, but to make real progress for the security of our people.

“All this, in turn, requires something else, something more fundamental. It requires a new mindset — that we summon the will, as nations, as partners, to do what this moment in history demands.”
