News broke this week that the Pac-10 Conference is in the throes of serious expansion consideration. For weeks, we heard about the Big Ten’s pursuit of turning its league into a power conference. Now it is the Pac-10 that is grabbing headlines with its reported pursuit of some of the biggest names and brands in college football.

The Pac-10’s expansion plans are bold and possibly earth-shattering for college football if the conference gets its way.

So, what is in the cards? Who is involved and what does it mean for the power brokers engaged in the talks?
The SEC will formally discuss expansion today with its presidents and chancellors while announcing member payouts that are significantly higher than a year ago due to new TV deals. Texas, though, is the big prize for any conference should the Longhorns leave the Big 12, which could lose members to the Big Ten.
In Thursday’s Houston Chronicle, Texas A&M Athletics Director Bill Byrne was asked if the SEC is an option for the Aggies if the Big 12 breaks up. “It might be,” Byrne said. “You know what? It might be.”

Slive declined to comment when asked if the SEC has talked with Texas A&M. “Strategic and thoughtful,” Slive responded in a popular refrain from what he says about SEC expansion.

If the SEC expanded, it wouldn’t be due to TV distribution, Slive said. He noted that SEC football games are on 73 million homes for its syndicated game, 100 million each on ESPN and ESPN2, 70 million on ESPNU, which continues to be picked up by more cable providers plus the untold millions over the airwaves on CBS.

Expansion, though, could allow the SEC to renegotiate its lucrative 15-year contracts with CBS and ESPN that were signed in 2008. Conference TV deals typically include clauses allowing renegotiations if a conf erence expands or contracts.0fb77af739er byu pac 10 expansion
