Sixteen killed in US floods; scores missing

ARKANSAS: Flash floods have swept away entire campsites in a forest in the southern US state of Arkansas, drowning at least 16 people as they slept and leaving dozens more missing.

Survivors described a torrent of water descending through the Ouachita National Forest, catching campers and families vacationing in hillside cabins completely unaware in the dead of night.

“What is being reported right now from the scene is that there are probably about 30 people still missing,” Chad Stover from the Arkansas department of emergency management, told media, putting the toll at 16.

The exact number of missing was hard to determine as the Albert Pike campground, which bore the brunt of the massive tide of water, had no registration system to show how many campers were present.

Three helicopters were scrambled to help rescuers on foot and horseback as they hunted the forest for survivors from the deluge, which saw local rivers swell by up to six meters (20 feet).

Officials brought a refrigerated truck to the forest to act as a temporary morgue, while at least 30 people had been rescued by early afternoon.

US President Barack Obama ordered federal emergency officials to be on call to help the state authorities if needed and along with the First Lady issued a special message to the disaster victims.

79361d94a9renee Michelle ReneeMichelle Renee, Millions of people everywhere are struggling to make ends meet, stay in their homes and afford to put gas in their car to even get to a job interview. Okay, so there are a few that are not struggling and some that will tell you that there is no recession, repeat stuff from The Secret, and then go home to a stack of bills. As a writer who isn’t sure where my next check is even coming from, browsing the job posts for freelance opportunities has become part of my regular routine. But a freelance position took on a whole new meaning today when I found this post for an “Executive/Personal Assistant”:

Busy executive seeks mature lady for, personal assistant duties, social engagements, and discrete rendezvous. If you are generally free during the day between 9-12am and live near the Eastlake Design district I am interested in speaking with you about this opportunity. Very generous financial incentive will be provided for companionship. Please include a picture and contact information in your reply to expedite the process. Prefer reserved housewife type looking for supplemental income.

After a few minutes I went back to copy the verbiage and it had been suddenly changed to “Assistant/Companion”. No matter what the heading is, this job posting on Craigslist, not listed in the gigs section under adult so only those looking for this type of “Betty Crocker meets Heidi Fleiss” job will be able to access it, got me thinking. In our current economic state and unemployment rates skyrocketing, I wonder, with so many unable to stay afloat, is this type of post more tempting to more women? What will the response rate be? Are creeps tapping into desperate women’s plight?

Whatever the case may be, I was sad to see the post, realizing that there actually may be women who are desperate enough and lack the support and self-esteem they need to never even consider this an option.

Derrion Albert Funeral, The funeral of a Chicago teen who was beaten to death on his way home from school drew civil rights leader the Rev. Jesse Jackson and Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan on Saturday, both calling for an end to youth violence.

Farrakhan said he came to the funeral because he was “deeply pained” by the death of 16-year-old honor roll student Derrion Albert. The boy was walking to a bus stop after school when a group of teens attacked him during a street fight late last month.

“Naturally, we wonder why such a beautiful life? Such a future we thought was waiting for this young man,” Farrakhan said. “This was a special young man of righteous bearing who God took from us so young.”

Cell phone video footage shows Albert being kicked and hit with splintered railroad ties. Four teens are charged in his death.

President Barack Obama is sending U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Education Secretary Arne Duncan, who once led Chicago Public Schools, to Chicago on Wednesday to meet with school officials, students and residents and talk about school violence.

“The eyes of the world are watching,” Pastor E.F. Ledbetter Jr. told mourners at the Greater Mount Hebron Baptist Church on the city’s South Side. “This has affected people all over the globe.”

Mayor Richard Daley, just off a plane Saturday from an International Olympic Committee meeting in Copenhagen where Chicago lost the 2016 Summer Games, said he would work with police, the community and school officials to break the “code of silence” that happens after street violence.

Police, ministers and community leaders have been asking people to come forward with information about Albert’s killing.
