US again expresses concern on Pak-Iran gas pipeline
The United States has once again expressed reservations over the proposed Pak-Iran gas pipeline project. Answering a question Tuesday regarding the meeting of Pakistani and Iranian officials a day ago, spokesperson of the US state department, Victoria Nuland said “we are talking to the Pakistanis about it”, as part of the global effort to increase pressure on Iran.
“We think this gas pipeline project is a bad idea and Pakistan should stay away from it”, she explicitly stated adding that US was also giving Pakistan alternative options for acquiring sources of energy. She, however, did not reply another question whether the US sanctions on Iran will affect the American assistance to Pakistan, in case the country decides to go ahead with the pipeline deal despite US opposition.
When asked to comment on a New York Times report that US was considering an apology to Pakistan on the NATO airstrike to move ahead from the deadlock, she said “we can t talk about all these issues in detail unless and until Pakistan completes its internal review”.
“We are waiting to hear from Pakistan so that we can sit down and discuss it. We want to discuss full range of issues and where we go with Pakistan unless their review is complete”, she reiterated, but did not comment on repeated questions whether US was ready to consider an apology to Pakistan
On a question about Pakistani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani s visit to Qatar, she sdenied that PM Gillani was meeting any US officials in Qatar. She was reluctant to answer whether the said visit was part of efforts to talk to Taliban, as a follow-up of Ambassador Marc Grossman s visit. She only remarked that “Pakistan is supportive of the reconciliation process”.

DUBAI: The prospect of expelling the PCB chairman Ijaz Butt as an ICC director was raised at the ICC board meeting in Dubai last week, a prominent cricket-related website reported.
The report said that Butt was compelled to accept a series of wide-ranging measures to reform Pakistan cricket without protest because the alternative would have been to face expulsion.
The possibility is believed to have been raised by an individual member and not the ICC.
This particular spur, however, is merely part of a much broader canvas of the cricket world’s discontent with Butt.
The focus of the two-day ICC board meeting was on anti-corruption and, in particular, concerns over the health of the game in Pakistan; specifically three broad areas were up for discussion, including an update on the spot-fixing investigations, how the game tackles corruption globally

Oil below $70, lowest in more than 3 months
SINGAPORE: Oil fell below $70 a barrel on Monday, to its lowest in more than three months, extending a loss of nearly 17 percent over the past two weeks on fears over Europe”s debts, the weak euro and swollen U.S. oil inventories.
The euro sank to four-year lows as angst over Europe”s debt crisis led investors to pull more money from stocks in favor of havens such as gold and Asian bonds.
U.S. crude for June delivery fell more than $1.00 on Monday to as low as $69.82 a barrel, its weakest since February 5. It was trading at $70.12 by 0303 GMT, down $1.49.
The contract settled down $2.79 on Friday, bringing a two-week tumble to $14.54, or 16.9 percent, the biggest two-week percentage loss since the period ending January 16, 2009.
The contract is expected to face volatility ahead of Monday”s June crude options expiry and the May 20 June crude contract expiry.
London Brent crude dropped $1.40 to $76.53 a barrel.
“At the moment all of the markets are on the way of declining further on the euro crisis. I think euro against dollar is possibly to go down to about $1.2, triggering another round of rectification in the market,” said Ken Hasegawa, a commodity derivatives manager at brokerage Newedge in Japan.
“Inventories of crude oil and oil products have been increased in recent weeks, that”s another factor of bearish mood in the market. Inventories are likely to increase again this week,” he added.
Stockpiles of crude at Cushing, Oklahoma, the delivery hub for the U.S. contract”s West Texas Intermediate benchmark crude, have risen in the last eight weeks to a record of 37 million barrels, pushing front-month U.S. crude down relative to both more distant futures contracts and the alternative global crude benchmark, Brent.
Qatar expects further pressure on oil prices from the uncertainty engendered by the European debt crisis, its oil minister said on Saturday.
“The oil price is not reflective of demand and supply, but psychological (factors) and uncertainty, especially in Europe (and due to the Greece) bailout,” Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah told reporters.
“All this put a lot of pressure on the world economy and the oil price,” he said.
The dollar rose 1.00 percent against a basket of currencies. Gold priced in sterling hit an all-time high at 867 pounds on Monday after the British currency struck a fresh one-year low against the dollar.
A strong U.S. currency makes dollar-denominated commodities, such as oil, more costly for holders of other currencies and tends to damp prices.
