ABU DHABI: Jacques Kallis’s 37th test century steered South Africa out of trouble at tea on the first day of the second and final test against Pakistan on Saturday.
Kallis raced to 105 off 142 balls, one of his quickest test centuries which included 12 fours and three sixes.
He was supported on the other end by AB de Villiers (80) in an unbroken partnership of 179 which took South Africa to 212 for three.
Earlier in the day after Pakistan won the toss, Tanvir Ahmed, a 31-year-old debutant, burst into international cricket with a three-wicket haul in the first session, reducing South Africa to 33-3 at one stage.
He sent back Alviro Petersen (2), Hashim Amla (4) and South African captain Graeme Smith (10).
The first test in Dubai last week ended in a draw.

DUBAI: Graeme’s Smith’s 22nd test century set South Africa on their way to a formidable 311 for three at the close of the first day of the first test against Pakistan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Friday.
Smith, who reached his half-century off 93 balls from the first ball after lunch, needed just another 58 deliveries to bring up his century as he looked to take the attack to the bowlers during the day’s middle session.
However, the left-hander who struck eight fours during his knock, departed to the next ball that he faced after reaching his ton when his attempted pull shot off left-arm swing bowler Wahab Riaz was caught by Taufeeq Umar on the deep midwicket fence.
Smith and Alviro Petersen had combined for a first-wicket stand of 153, with Petersen weighing in with 67 in an innings that included nine fours on a wicket which offered very

South Africa survive fiery Roach burst to clinch series
BRIDGETOWN: South Africa survived a fiery spell of fast bowling to complete a seven-wicket victory over West Indies before lunch on day four of the third test on Tuesday and clinch the series 2-0.
Needing 47 to win, the Proteas limped to 49 for three after fast bowler Kemar Roach struck Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis on the helmet and the umpires had to intervene to keep the peace as tempers flared between the players.
West Indies resumed overnight on 134 for seven with Shivnarine Chanderpaul on 57. The Guyanese left hander ran out of partners and finished on 71 not out from 179 deliveries with seven fours and a six after Morne Morkel took three wickets to run through the tail.
Morkel sent Sulieman Benn”s off stump cartwheeling and Roach edged a wide delivery to wicketkeeper Mark Boucher. The innings ended on 161 when last man Brandon Bess steered a short lifting delivery to Kallis at second slip.
Roach delivered a series of brutish short balls, one of which rocked the grill of Smith”s helmet and shook up the Proteas captain.
In Roach”s next over Smith (10) pulled another short delivery straight to Chanderpaul at mid-wicket.
Alviro Petersen, on six, attempted to drive through the covers and edged the ball on to his stumps and Hashim Amla”s poor series continued when he was caught at gully for 25.
AB de Villiers clinched victory with a four through third man off his first delivery.
Earlier, Morne Morkel too, wrapped up the West Indies innings in the first
hour, when he ended with three for 33 from 14.1 overs.
Morkel bowled Sulieman Benn for nine, had Roach caught behind for eight, and Brandon Bess caught at second slip for a first-ball duck, leaving Shivnarine Chanderpaul unbeaten on 71.
Johan Botha was named Man-of-the-Match for his match figures of seven for 102, and Dale Steyn was named Man-of-the-Series for his 15 wickets at 18.13 runs apiece.
Super-charged Steyn leads South Africa to victory
PORT OF SPAIN: Fast bowler Dale Steyn starred again as South Africa secured a 163-run victory over the West Indies in the opening Test on Sunday.
Steyn collected three wickets for 65 runs from 15.3 overs, as West Indies, chasing 457 for victory, were bowled out for 293, just before the rescheduled close on the fourth day at Queen”s Park Oval.
The South African quick ended the match with figures of eight for 94 to earn the man-of-the-match award.
Steyn bowled Nelon Pascal off an inside edge for 10, when the West Indies tail-ender tried a flamboyant one-legged pull.
Morne Morkel supported Steyn with two for 49 from 12 overs, while left-arm spinner Paul Harris took two for 91 from 26.3 overs.
The victory gave the Proteas a 1-0 lead in the three-Test series, which continues on Friday in St. Kitts.
“Our bowlers were running on fumes there at the end, and it was not made any easier for us with them struggling with the run-ups from one end, and a soft landing,” said South Africa captain Graeme Smith.
“It was another hot day, and we have had to work a little bit harder. The pitch was not conducive to really exciting Test match cricket. It was about a long, hard graft, and we did that well, and we have won in three and a half days, so I am happy.”
The South Africans had declared on 206 for four in their second innings an hour and 20 minutes before lunch, after Smith had fallen for the top score of 90.
The Proteas then sweated through the remainder of the day to condemn West Indies to their third straight defeat at their hands at this ground, despite a top score of 73 from West Indies captain Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo”s enterprising 49, and Sulieman Benn”s entertaining 42.
“It”s stating the obvious that our batting was again the main problem, and getting 102 in the first innings always put us on the back-foot,” said Gayle.
“I thought we started the Test fairly well on the first day, but we allowed things to slip away on the second day, and things gradually got better for South Africa.”
Steyn and Morkel made early inroads into the brittle West Indies batting before lunch, to keep the South Africans in the hunt.
Morkel removed opener Travis Dowlin for one, and Steyn snared Brendan Nash for 13, as West Indies reached 62 for two at the interval.
The Proteas were scenting victory when they removed Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Gayle, West Indies” two most accomplished batsmen, before tea, after the pair had put on 55 for the third wicket.
As he has done several times in the past, Jacques Kallis provided South Africa with the breakthrough, when he had Chanderpaul caught at second slip for 15 to leave West Indies 94 for three.
Morkel, using his height to gain extra bounce from the uneven pitch, trapped Gayle lbw with the second ball of a new spell.
The West Indies captain, whose 50 came from 62 balls when he whipped Lonwabo Tsotsobe through square leg for four, spent a little over two and a half hours at the crease, faced 106 balls, and struck nine fours and one six.
The South Africans continued to press their advantage before tea, but they lost their right to challenge umpiring decisions.
This followed confirmation from video umpire Simon Taufel that their appeal for the lbw of left-hander Narsingh Deonarine was misplaced, and the Australian umpire sparing Dwayne Bravo from another cheap surrender, with an inconclusive verdict for a bat-pad catch off Harris.
After tea, the Proteas were made to dig deep, when a few partnerships sprung up that almost broke their backs.
The most significant came very late, when the frontline bowlers were probably at their lowest ebb, and Benn added 66 for the eighth wicket with Shane Shillingford.
Smith turned to Alviro Petersen, and he gave South Africa the final push, when he trapped Benn lbw for his maiden Test wicket before Harris and Steyn finished things off.
South Africa hold nerve to deny West Indies unlikely victory
NORTH SOUND: South Africa withstood a late West Indies fight-back led by Darren Sammy to prevail by 17 runs in the second One-day International on Monday and take a 2-0 lead in the five match series.
The South Africans appeared to be coasting to victory, when West Indies, chasing 301 for victory from their 50 overs, slumped to 236 for eight in the 45th over.
But the Proteas came under attack from Sammy, whose unbeaten 58 from 24 balls contained two fours and six sixes, as he dominated a ninth-wicket stand of 47 with Ravi Rampaul.
South Africa were fortunate however, when fast-medium bowler Ryan McLaren skillfully fielded a drive from Sammy on his follow-through, and Rampaul was run out off the last ball of the 48th over backing up too far.
Graeme Smith, the South African captain, had the privilege of finishing the match, when Kieron Pollard, running for Nikita Miller, was run out off the first ball of the next over, with a direct hit by Smith at the bowler”s end from short cover.
“We weren”t at our best, and we let a few key chances go earlier, which probably could have gone on to cost us the game,” said a relieved Smith.
“Outside of our fielding, I think we controlled the game very, very well, and up to Sammy”s 58, we were in control, but our fielding, our catching in particular, we need to take another look.”
The third and fourth ODIs will be contested this coming Friday and Sunday at Windsor Park in the Dominica capital of Roseau.
South Africa conceded three half-centuries to West Indies, with Dwayne Bravo hitting the top score of 74 from 70 balls, and the newly-arrived opener Dale Richards 51 from 85 balls.
The Proteas put West Indies under early pressure, but Richards and Chris Gayle still gave the home team a steady start of 40.
South Africa tightened their grip, when they reduced West Indies to 119 for three, but Bravo added 63 for the fourth wicket with Pollard, as the hosts ran into deep trouble, and Sammy nearly carried them over the threshold.
“I have to commend the guys for the effort of chasing 300 runs, and in particular, Darren for giving us a bit of hope at the end,” said Gayle.
“The middle overs continue to cause our downfall because there are too many dot-balls in that period of our innings, and the run rate creeps up on us, and makes it difficult for the batsmen towards the end.”
Earlier, Hashim Amla continued his rich vein of form with 92, and Jacques Kallis supported with 85 to lead South Africa to 300 for five from their 50 overs.
Amla struck seven boundaries from 95 balls, and Kallis – playing his 300th ODI – hit four fours from 89 balls in a stand of 79 for the second wicket, after the South Africans chose to bat.
The Proteas benefitted from an opening stand of 89 between Amla and Smith before left-arm spinner Miller bowled the South African captain behind his legs for 37 in the 16th over.
Amla continued to grind away, and reached his 50 from 45 balls with a dab to third man off Bravo before he was caught at mid-wicket off Jerome Taylor in the 32nd over.
Kallis, who became only the second South African behind Shaun Pollock to appear in 300 ODIs, and the 15th player overall, turned Rampaul through square leg for a single to reach his half century from 59 balls.
A.B. de Villiers joined him to consolidate South Africa”s position with a stand of 71 for the third wicket with Kallis before he was caught inside the long-off boundary for 41 off Kieron Pollard in the 43rd over.
In the closing overs, Kallis was caught at point off Pollard in the 47th over, and Alviro Petersen was lbw playing across Taylor for one, as South Africa hunted quick runs.

KOLKATA : India Vs South Africa Test, South Africa were struggling to save the second and final cricket Test against India after losing three key wickets in a rain-curtailed fourth day’s play on Wednesday.

Hashim Amla was unbeaten on 45 and Ashwell Prince was yet to open his account at the break, which was taken early due to rain.
South Africa, who made 296 in their first innings, still trail India by 236 runs with seven wickets in hand.
India declared their first innings on a mammoth 643-6, built on centuries by Virender Sehwag (165), Venkatsai Laxman (143 not out), Mahendra Singh Dhoni (132 not out) and Sachin Tendulkar (106).
The tourists need a draw to win their first Test series in India for a decade and reclaim the top spot in the official rankings from Dhoni’s men, after winning the opening match in Nagpur by an innings and six runs.
Off-spinner Harbhajan gave India the breakthrough in the post-lunch session when he got rid of first-innings centurion Petersen (21) in his second over after the break.
The debutant opener was foxed by a delivery that found the inside edge of his bat and popped up to short leg where Subramaniam Badrinath latched on to the head-high catch on second attempt.
Kallis shaped up to defend against Mishra but offered an outside edge to Mahendra Singh Dhoni behind the stumps. He shared 57 runs for the third wicket with Amla.
Earlier, only 14 overs were bowled in the morning session after a wet outfield delayed start of play by 90 minutes.
Smith and Petersen played with caution after resuming at the overnight total of 6-0, until Mishra was brought into attack in the 13th over.
Mishra struck off his first delivery, trapping Smith in front of the wicket to cap a miserable outing for the South African skipper in the Test series. Smith scored just 30 runs in the series.
