J.R. had just smacked into a padded wall during his final event at the U.S. Olympic trials for short-track speedskating. He sat frozen for just a moment as one of the most frightening scenarios in his sport of crashes and spills had happened: The tip of his knife-sharp right skate blade had lodged into his left thigh, leaving a gruesome six-inch incision in the quadriceps muscle.

“I had to pull it out,” said J.R. Celski, of Federal Way, Wash. “I saw my femur. It’s not fun seeing things you don’t normally see in your body.”

Chris Celski, a San Jose State graduate, couldn’t stop thinking: Where’s the damn ambulance? The Berry Events Center had gone cold silent — except for J.R.’s screams.

In what seemed like an eternity, a stretcher appeared, and J.R. — short for John Robert — was carried away. Doctors in Michigan sewed the muscle together with 60 stitches and counted the patient lucky — the blade missed the femoral artery by about an inch.

“The first thing I thought, ‘My career is over,’ ” said J.R., who will attend Cal in the fall. “It is gone within a blink of the eye.”

Instead, the Monterey native has made a remarkable journey back to the Vancouver Games. Celski will compete in his first race since the injury Saturday evening in the opening heat of the 1,500 meters at the Pacific Coliseum.

Mogadishu: Shelling in Somali 16 killed, Mortars landed in Somalia’s capital Thursday, killing at least 16 people and wounding more than 25 ambulance service in Mogadishu, he said.
