Beijing cruising towards five million vehicles

BEIJING: The number of vehicles registered in Beijing picked up pace in early 2010, government figures showed Wednesday, putting the Chinese capital on course to have five million cars on the roads by year”s end.

The total number of cars registered in the first four months of 2010 rose 23.8 percent from a year earlier to 248,000, the Beijing municipal taxation office, which collects auto purchasing taxes, said.

That means an average 15,500 new cars hit the city”s roads every week during the January-April period, in a sign of the rising affluence of the middle class — and a sign that Beijing”s notoriously bad air quality could further suffer.

If the trend continues, the number of cars in Beijing could near five million by the end of the year. The four million mark was passed in December.

That would mean that on average more than a quarter of the 17.6 million permanent residents in the city has a car.

It took Beijing nearly half a century to hit the one-million mark for cars in 1997, from just 2,300 in 1949.

It took six and a half years to register the second million, a local news agency said previously, and the pace of growth has continued to accelerate.

In 2008, government vehicles and all private automobiles were banned from Beijing”s roads for one day each week in measures aimed at easing congestion and curbing emissions.

Beijing”s air is among the most polluted in the world, and the problem is getting worse amid high demand for private vehicles from its increasingly affluent residents.

China”s auto sales hit 13.64 million units in 2009, overtaking those in the United States to make the country the world”s top auto market, as the government offered incentives such as lower taxes to boost the sector.

25 Dead In China Coal Mine Fire:Media

BEIJING China : Twenty-five people have been killed in a coal mine fire in central China, local authorities said on Tuesday, the latest deadly incident in the country’s hazardous mining industry.

The city government said the blaze in a mine in Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan province, was sparked when cables caught fire late Monday in one of the main pits.

Six miners were saved, but the rest died.

Police have detained at least three mine managers and frozen their assets and those of the facility after an initial investigation revealed the mine was operating illegally, the government said.

China’s coal mines are among the most dangerous in the world, with safety standards often ignored in the quest for profits and the drive to meet surging demand for coal — the source of about 70 percent of China’s energy.

Earlier this month, more than 30 miners were killed in a flood at a coal mine in the Inner Mongolia region in northern China.

Kandi Burruss Fiance Funeral

The Real Housewives of Atlant’s star Kandi Burruss whose fiancé A.J Jewell died last week, his funeral proceeded today. It should be mention here that AJ Jewell died after a fight with Fredrick James outside the parking lot of Atlanta club Body Tap. A.J Jewell was a part owner of the club and the Fredrick was an employee there. It is said that fight started over an issue of a woman. Ellie Greenwich Dies At 68 Years Old

Ellie Greenwich, a songwriter who along with producer Phil Spector and co-writer Jeff Barry crafted some of the biggest and greatest singles of the 1960s, passed away at the age of 68. The AP reports that Greenwich died of a heart attack in New York’s Roosevelt Hospital, where she was battling pneumonia. Among the most famous songs that list Greenwich as a songwriter are the Ronettes’ “Be My Baby” and “Baby, I Love You,” the Shangri-La’s “Leader of the Pack,” the Dixie Cups’ “Chapel of Love,” Tina & Ike Turner’s “River Deep, Mountain High” and the Crystals’ “Then He Kissed Me” and “Da Doo Ron Ron.” Each of those landmark tracks were listed among Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Discovered by famed songwriters Leiber and Stoller, Greenwich’s other major hits include Manfred Mann’s “Doo Wah Diddy Diddy,” Darlene Love’s “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” and Tommy James’ and the Shondells’ “Hanky Panky.” Greenwich and Barry also helped nurture the career of a fledgling singer-songwriter named Neil Diamond, and Greenwich and Barry produced and contributed background vocals to Diamond hits like “Kentucky Woman,” “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon,” “Cherry, Cherry,” “Red, Red Wine” and “I’m a Believer.”

Greenwich, along with Barry, was inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in 1991.
