LOS ANGELES — John Wooden was honored with a moment of silence before Game 2 of the NBA finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics on Sunday.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Bill Walton, two of Wooden’s greatest players at UCLA, took turns speaking publicly for the first time since the 99-year-old Hall of Famer died Friday.
“It’s very difficult for me to put into words the greatness of John Wooden,” Abdul-Jabbar said. “He was so much more than a basketball coach. To have him in my life was a true blessing. I will always be grateful I was able to be one of his students.”
Abdul-Jabbar rushed back from Europe to visit Wooden at his hospital bedside before he died. Wooden’s teams won a record 10 NCAA championships at UCLA, including seven in a row.
The award honors the memory of the late Hall of Fame coach and is presented to someone who has demonstrated a high level of excellence, integrity and commitment to promoting the NBA throughout their careers.
Winter, a former Lakers consultant, helped refine the triangle offense and was instrumental in assisting Lakers coach Phil Jackson win six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls and four with the Lakers.
“His coaching record was impeccable,” Jackson said. “For the first 20 years of basketball that he coached he was one of the top coaches ever in the game.”
Ramsay guided the Portland Trail Blazers to the 1977 NBA championship and retired as the NBA’s second winningest coach of all-time.
2011 ALL-STAR GAME: The NBA All-Star game is returning to Los Angeles next year.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Hall of Famer James Worthy helped unveil the logo that will be used for All-Star weekend on Feb. 17-20.
The game will be held in Los Angeles for a record fifth time, with the Lakers and Clippers serving as co-hosts.
“We’re looking forward to being back here in Los Angeles for our All-Star weekend or what’s really become a week now,” NBA deputy commissioner Adam Silver said. “It becomes the center of the basketball world for a week.”
rue mcclanahan death

n less than two years, Betty White has seen the passing of her ‘Golden Girls’ castmates Estelle Getty, Bea Arthur and Rue McClanahan. Now, the comedy icon has given her first reaction to McClanahan’s death today from a stroke.
“Rue was a close and dear friend,” she tells ‘The Insider.’ “I treasure our relationship. It hurts more than I ever thought it would, if that’s even possible.”
From 1985 to 1992, White and McClanahan played unlikely friends on the hit series — White, as simple Rose, and Rue as the bodacious Blanche. Both actresses portrayed these same characters on four different sitcoms — ‘The Golden Girls,’ ‘The Golden Palace,’ ‘Nurses’ and ‘Empty Nest.’
‘Golden’ co-stars Estelle Getty and Bea Arthur passed away in July of 2008 and April of 2009, respectively.
White and McClanahan’s working relationship began well before either was a ‘Golden Girl.’ Both were supporting players on Vicki Lawrence’s kitchy sitcom ‘Mama’s Family’ in the early 1980s — White as Mama’s snooty daughter Ellen, while Rue appeared as her unmarried sister, Fran.
According to IMDB, White was originally considered for the role of Blanche on ‘Girls.’ However, producers were reluctant to typecast White as sexually aggressive after her turn as Sue Ann Nivens on ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show.’ As Rue had already played a more introverted character — that of Vivian on ‘Maude’ — producers felt it best to challenge the actresses with roles unlike anything they had ever played before. It’s a good thing they did; White and McClanahan were iconic as Rose and Blanche, respectively. Both actresses won lead actress Emmys for ‘Girls.’
White and McClanahan also shared an interest in animal rights activism. Rue was active on behalf of PETA, and White endorses a number of animal welfare causes, including the Los Angeles Zoo Commission, the Morris Animal Foundation and Actors & Others for Animals. White has also published a book about her love of animals — ‘Betty White’s Pet-Love: How Pets Take Care of Us.’

, the Hurdy Gurdy Folk Music Club Concert Series at the Fair Lawn Community Center will wrap up its season with a Turn Back the Clock Night featuring the New York old-time string band the Second Fiddles, and from the mountains of Virginia, the Shivers. The Hurdy Gurdy promises an evening of old-time style music and vaudeville humor that will take the audience back to the days of the early country music stage shows.
George and Susette Shiver bring variety musical comedy back to the stage. One part early country music, one part Bluegrass and one part vaudeville, The Shivers are George Burns and Gracie Allen gone country. But not the country of today, rather they have gone back to a time when the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, the Delmore Brothers and Charlie Poole played with Will Rodgers and Uncle Dave Macon and comedy was a big part of the show.
Sharing the stage for this unique evening of music will be New York City’s own The Second Fiddles. Formed in 2005, The Second Fiddles are a trio in the tradition of the great stringbands that performed at the turn of the century (the last century!) The artists that traveled with the medicine shows were adept at all genre’s of American roots music. The Fiddles pull from the song books of Country, Blues, Bluegrass, Gospel and Swing bands of the ’20s, ’30s and ’40s.
The Fair Lawn Community Center is located at 10-10 20th Street in Fair Lawn. Tickets for this concert are $20 ($17 for Hurdy Gurdy members) and can be purchased online at www.hurdygurdyfolk.org or at the box office at the Fair Lawn Community Center on the night of the concert.

Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) starts Season 4 in deep trouble—again.
The superspy has been kidnapped by Management, the mysterious group that had him framed and banished from the CIA. Now, impressed by his recapture of the psycho ex-operative Simon, they want Michael’s considerable talents on their side. He ends up partnering with his captor, the dapper Vaughn (The Wire’s Robert Wisdom). “Vaughn is a more friendly collaborator than the other coercive faces of Management, but he’s no less dangerous,” warns exec producer Matt Nix.
On the home front, Jesse Garcia (Coby Bell), another falsely accused ex-federal agent, will join Michael’s evil-fighting team. “He’s a cool guy who has an interesting relationship with both Mike’s mom, Madeline [Sharon Gless], and his sometime lover Fiona [Gabrielle Anwar],” Nix reveals.
In a later episode, Burt Reynolds guests as a formerly hotshot operative-turned-bartender. “There’s still fun to be had,” Nix promises, “but we’re exploring Michael’s inner life—where he’s got some very dark stuff.”The ongoing story arc in “Burn Notice”may be on firmer footing this year, as Michael 
(Jeffrey Donovan) gets closer than he’s ever been to the people who got him fired from his gig as an intelligence operative. In the season opener, Robert Wisdom (“The Wire”) tempts Michael with an offer from the mysterious “Management,” which needs his particular skills, and the ultimate outcome of Michael’s decision is intriguing.
Still, regarding the show’s title conceit, I can understand if viewers are starting to feel a little burned themselves. I am still wary of the ongoing story arc, which has delivered diminishing returns for some time. In that respect, “Burn Notice” has started to resemble “How I Met Your Mother,” which for five 
seasons has occasionally tantalized viewers with the idea that Ted will meet the mother of his children, but the meeting never transpires (and frankly if the show had ignored the title premise for years at a time, that would have been fine with me). Both shows need to either ignore or introduce solid forward movement to those story lines, because they threaten to become irritating distractions.

WOODBURY—Webster Bank is the lead sponsor with a $5,000 donation for the Glebe House Museum and Gertrude Jekyll Garden’s An Evening of Festive Dinners with Friends, the museum announced.
The bank, like the Glebe House, has a long history in the community, and is celebrating 75 years of service this year. It has grown from a one-room office in Waterbury, to be the largest independent commercial bank based in New England.
The museum, one of Woodbury’s most important historic sites, has been welcoming visitors since 1925. It celebrates this 85th anniversary at the Festive Dinners with Friends fund-raiser Saturday, June 5.The Webster Bank is going to appeal the court’s decision.
In total, there were 9 homeowners who didn’t settle out of court and they will be getting each one an amount higher than $15,000 plus punitive damages of $250,000. The developer on the other hand will go home with $9.9 million dollars!
It seems the bank reported to credit agencies that these homeowners had defaulted on the loans they got for the construction.

BOSTON — They had met in the paint, amid smiles and well wishes, at last year’s All-Star game, where Dwight Howard allowed Nate Robinson to leap over him to win the slam dunk title. They found themselves there again Friday in the second quarter of Game 6 at TD Garden with a real title on the line — the Eastern Conference’s. This time, there were no pleasantries exchanged when Robinson drove the lane and tried to dunk over Howard.
Robinson was fouled hard by Howard, and though he missed one of two free throws, the play served as a catalyst as Robinson pushed the Celtics to an early 18-point lead and to a 96-84 victory toppling of the defending conference champion Orlando Magic.
Boston won the series, 4-2, but not without some lost teeth, muscle spasms, sore backs and concussions after winning the first three games and facilitating an Orlando resurgence.
The Celtics will play in the finals for the 21st time in the franchise’s decorated history, against the Los Angeles Lakers or the Phoenix Suns. The Lakers can clinch the title Saturday night. If they win, the finals will represent a rematch of 2008, when Boston hung its 17th championship banner.
“Bring home No. 18 now, all right?” the two-time Celtics champion David Cowens said as he delivered the conference title trophy to the co-owner Wyc Grousbeck.

(Reuters) – The Phoenix Suns turned up the heat in the Western Conference finals by beating the Los Angeles Lakers 118-109 in Game Three on Sunday.Outgunned in the first two games of the series, the Phoenix defense stepped up while Amare Stoudemire delivered 42 points and 11 rebounds to help the Suns close the gap in the best-of-seven series to 2-1.
Point guard Steve Nash put up 17 points and 15 assists, despite sustaining what could be a broken nose, but it was the dogged Phoenix zone defense that did most to snap the Lakers’ eight-game playoff winning streak.
“The nose is the least of my concerns,” Nash, who collided with Derek Fisher late in the game, told reporters.
“We are happy to get ourselves back in a position to tie this thing on Tuesday night.”
Game Four, which will also be played in Arizona, could have a major bearing whether the widely-anticipated showdown between Los Angeles and the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals takes place.
Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 36 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds but the visitors made just nine of 32 three-point attempts.
They were outscored 32-25 in the fourth quarter, when they held a brief one-point lead with 8:47 remaining. The Suns quickly responded with an 11-2 spurt and sprinted to the finish line.
Center Robin Lopez gave Phoenix an unexpected lift with 20 points and Stoudemire was a steady force down the stretch as he scored 29 of his total in the second half.
“(The zone) was the difference in them shooting 58 percent or 48 percent (tonight),” Suns coach Alvin Gentry said of his defense, which had shipped 252 points over the first two games.
“For the most part all their shots were coming from the outside and we did a good job with rotations.”
Pau Gasol had 23 points and nine rebounds, while Fisher scored 18 for the Lakers.
