ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN NEWS: Parliament’s Constitutional Reforms Committee (CRC) on Tuesday approved the suggestion of increasing the number of Judicial Commission’s members to 7. The committee – working on the draft of 18th Constitutional Amendment – had earlier suggested that the names of the judges to be considered for the elevation in Supreme and High Courts be finalized by a six-member judicial commission that will recommend these to a Parliament’s body for approval. The proposal drew severe criticism by legal fraternity and constitutional experts mostly due to the composition of the commission that was suggested to have Chief Justice of Pakistan as its head and two senior Supreme Court judges, federal law minister, secretary law and attorney general as its members.

It was feared that the equal number of judges and government officials in the commission will undermine the professionalism and merit to be considered for the appointment of judges in higher judiciary.

The CRC, presently engaged in wrapping up its months-long work on constitutional amendments, held a special meeting here to consider the recommendations and suggestions by law experts and bar council and associations on the criteria for judges’ appointment.

The committee decided to increase the number of judicial commission’s members to 7 from existing 6. The seventh member of the body will be a retired judge from the apex court, however, it was not yet clear who will be his appointing authority.
