Jim Leavitt Fired Breaking news updates :-  Jim Leavitt South Florida football coach has been fired following an investigation of an allegation that he struck one of his players in the locker room.

Jim Leavitt confirmed his dismissal, telling The Associated Press he was “disappointed” and the allegation was “absolutely false.”

USF would not confirm Leavitt’s dismissal, but university spokeswoman Lara Wade said all questions would be answered when the school released a report later Friday.

AOL FanHouse first reported the firing Friday. USF president Judy Genshaft and athletic director Doug Woolard launched the investigation last month after a FanHouse report said Leavitt had grabbed sophomore Joel Miller by the throat and hit him in the face twice during halftime of a game on Nov. 21.

c623ab342dt time Google Profit Falls For 1st TimeGoogle posted the first-ever decline in its quarterly earnings Thursday but still beat market expectations in the withering economic climate.

The web search giant said that it earned 382 million dollars, or 1.21 dollars per share, in the three months ending in December – a drop of 68 per cent from the same period in 2007. But the profit was hit by a 1.5-billion-dollar charge for write downs on investments like AOL and Clearwire and the cost of issuing new stock options to employees whose existing warrants were below the company’s share price.

Revenue increased 18 per cent to 5.7 billion dollars, or 4.2 billion dollars once payments that Google makes to its ad partners were taken into account.

“Our business is quite healthy, especially given the economic climate,” Google chief executive and Chairman Eric Schmidt said.

He warned that the company was heading into “uncharted territory” as conditions could worsen in the shrinking US economy.

“We don’t know how long this period will last,” Schmidt told analysts in a conference call. “We obviously hope it will be short. We’re certainly prepared to get through this, no problem.”

Shares of Google rose more than 2 per cent in after-hours trading to 312.75 dollars, following the earnings announcement.

Microsoft says EU may boost Google dominance

d19e75cdf0inance Microsoft says EU may boost Google dominanceMicrosoft says EU regulators will hand Google more dominance of the Internet search business if they go ahead with planned regulations on Microsoft’s Windows operating system, the Financial Times reported.

The FT said on Saturday that the move by Microsoft was contained in a confidential last-minute submission to the European Commission aimed at heading off antitrust action.

A Commission spokesman said in response to the report: “The Commission will examine all the arguments outlined by Microsoft in their reply to the statement of objections.”

Microsoft officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

The Commission, which regulates competition in the 27-country European Union, has charged Microsoft with seeking to stymie rivals by tying the firm’s Web browser to its dominant Windows system.

Microsoft replied to the EU antitrust charges, a so-called “statement of objections”, on April 28. It is due to respond orally to the accusations in early June.

By bundling Internet Explorer with Windows, Microsoft shielded its browser from competition with rival products, harming innovation and reducing customer choice, the Commission had said.

Microsoft has said the Commission may order it to distribute other browsers with the operating system.

But the newspaper reported that Microsoft had questioned in its official response, a copy of which the FT had seen, whether such a proposal from the Commission would be legal.

The company claimed competition would be harmed in the Internet search market, the report said.

This is because two of the main rival browser companies, Opera and Mozilla, maker of the Firefox browser, have agreements with Google so their browsers automatically default to the Google search engine, as does Google’s browser, Chrome, it said.

Also, if the screen showing computer users their browser choices is created by the PC makers, Google could work directly with these manufacturers and have them set the search defaults in its favour, the paper cited the software company as saying.

Microsoft also contends that a requirement to distribute other browsers with Windows could infringe its brand rights and impose a potential intellectual property liability, the paper said.

Intel hit with record $1.45 billion antitrust fine

5b22e0c687l logo Intel hit with record $1.45 billion antitrust fineBRUSSELS: The European Commission imposed a record 1.06 billion euros ($1.45 billion) fine on chipmaker Intel Corp on Wednesday and ordered it halt illegal rebates and other practices to squeeze out rival AMD.

“Intel has harmed millions of European consumers by deliberately acting to keep competitors out of the market for computer chips for many years,” European Union Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said in a statement.

The EU executive said Intel paid computer makers to postpone or cancel plans to launch products that used AMD chips, paid illegal, secret rebates so computer makers would use mostly or entirely Intel chips, and paid a major retailer to stock only computers with its chips.

It ordered Intel “cease the illegal practices immediately to the extent that they are still ongoing.”

Intel may continue to offer rebates, so long as they are legal, the Commission said.

The EU antitrust fine is the biggest imposed on an individual company, exceeding an 896-million euro penalty last year against glass maker Saint-Gobain for price fixing, and a 497-million euro fine in 2004 on Microsoft for abuse of dominance.

The Commission investigated practices dating back to 2002, and said Europe accounted for 30 percent of Intel’s current worldwide 22 billion euro market.

The Commission said Intel must pay the fine, which represents 4.15 percent of the company’s 2008 turnover, within three months of the date of the notification of the decision.

Intel, whose microprocessors power eight out of every 10 PCs in the world, posted first quarter sales of $7.1 billion. Analysts estimated the company enjoys a sizeable cash balance, generating close to $10 billion in cash last year.

The Commission, tasked with ensuring companies do not abuse any market dominance or make deals that restrict competition in the 27-country European Union, started its investigation into Intel in 2001 after a complaint by Advanced Micro Devices.

AMD has also filed a U.S. lawsuit against Intel, which is set to be heard in court in 2010.

The Commission characterised its investigation as one of several, citing rulings against Intel by the Japan Fair Trade Commission and the Korean Fair Trade Commission.

It also referred to investigations by the U.S. Trade Commission and the State of New York.

The decision comes against the background of a renewed determination by the United States to pursue dominant companies that use their power to crush rivals.

The U.S. Justice Department’s antitrust chief, Christine Varney, announced this week she “will be aggressively pursuing” such abuse.

Nokia e71x

Remember the Nokia E71x? Well, you probably know that this is a remix of the Nokia E71 QWERTY smartphone that was really welcomed by the public, but fully deserved. The Nokia E71x looks really great. I mean it. It really does, and IMO Nokia manufactures some of the worst looking cellphones, but this one is really great and it can compete against the BlackBerry Curve or BlackBerry Bold. Well, last time we’ve talked about the Nokia E71x, the cellphone just hit the AT&T store for a price of $99.99, however, upon hearing the fact that Samsung Jack will come to AT&T for $99.99, Nokia got scared and it is now selling its QWERTY smartphone for 1 cent for a two-year commitment with AT&T.5679a13ad585x250 Nokia e71x

I like the Samsung Jack, but the E71x is even better and it’s available for only $.01 and how can you turn this down? Geez… However, let me remind you that the Nokia E71x features a 3.2MP camera, 2.4? LCD screen, 3G, full QWERTY, Bluetooth, USB, 12)MB internal memory, a microSD card expandable slot, Symbian S60, AOL Mail, Yahoo! Messenger, Xpress Mail, Windows Live Mail, Microsoft Outlook, and many many others that will make anybody drool.
