Atlantis set for ‘final’ return

The US shuttle Atlantis and its six crewmen are heading back to Earth, wrapping up the craft’s 32nd – and probably final – trip into space.
Atlantis undocked from the upgraded and almost completed International Space Station (ISS) on Sunday, some 354km above the Indian Ocean.
It is set to arrive at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida at 0848 local time (1248 GMT) on Wednesday.
Only two more shuttle flights remain before the fleet is retired.
Before heading home, the shuttle crew still has to conduct a last inspection of the spacecraft, making sure it wasn’t damaged during the mission.
Right before the departure, the ISS astronauts thanked the ship’s crew, urging them to stay safe.
After Atlantis touches down in Florida, it is unlikely to fly again – the White House wants to discontinue the entire shuttle programme.
Atlantis spent a week flying jointly with the station, where it successfully installed a new 8t, 6m-long Russian Mini-Research Module 1 Rassvet (Dawn) packed with 1.5t of Nasa cargo.
The station’s astronauts opened the new module on 20 May. Rassvet will be used for cargo storage and as a fourth docking port for the Soyuz and Progress spacecraft’s crew and cargo vehicles.
While out on three spacewalks, Atlantis mission specialists Steve Bowen, Michael Good and Garrett Reisman replaced six solar array batteries on the orbiting platform and installed a backup communications Ku-band antenna and a robot tool tray.
Three hours before undocking, the two commanding officers and all 10 members of both crews shook hands and embraced.
This is the time when we have to say goodbye to our friends, our colleagues, the excellent crew of shuttle Atlantis that did an excellent job performing three EVAs, installing the new Russian module, having good fun, enjoying living on the station and working in space, the ISS Expedition 23 commander Oleg Kotov told Ken Ham, who leads the Atlantis crew. Thank you Ken, for an excellent job.
Commander Ham responded: Well, Oleg, we are one happy shuttle crew, and we are happy because of all of your efforts, too.
Kotov, together with a flight engineer TJ Creamer and Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi, are shortly set to follow the Atlantis crew back to Earth after half a year in space. They will head to Kazakhstan’s Baikonur Cosmodrome aboard a Soyuz TMA-17 capsule on 1 June.

Shuttle Atlantis undocks from space station

CAPE CANAVERAL: After a week of flying together, shuttle Atlantis undocked from a larger and virtually completed International Space Station on Sunday and headed for home on its final voyage.

“Have a safe trip back and godspeed to you,” radioed the space station”s skipper, Oleg Kotov.

Atlantis isn”t due to land until Wednesday. On Monday, the six crewmen will conduct one last safety inspection of their ship.

“We”ll see you all on the surface of planet Earth again soon,” Atlantis” commander, Kenneth Ham, called out.

The two spacecraft parted company 220 miles above the Indian Ocean. Before the hatches closed between them, the commanding officers shook hands twice and laughed, then embraced. Their crewmates — representing the United States, Russia and Japan — followed suit.

Earlier in the day, Ham told reporters that both crews had fun. All 12 space fliers bonded through hard work and performed as a single team, he said. Mission Control reveled in the camaraderie as well, and lead flight director Emily Nelson relayed her appreciation as Atlantis sailed away from the orbiting outpost.

The space station is bigger and packs more power, thanks to Atlantis and its crewmen. They left behind a new Russian compartment packed with supplies, as well as six fresh batteries and other equipment that was hooked up during a series of spacewalks.

Its total mass exceeds 816,000 pounds, and it”s 98 percent complete in terms of living space.

“This place is now a palace. It”s huge, and I”ve had great fun exploring it,” said shuttle astronaut Piers Sellers. “We”re seeing station in pretty much its final form, and it”s really magnificent.”

Two shuttle missions remain to wrap up NASA”s share of construction. Discovery is scheduled to fly in September, followed by Endeavour in November.

As it currently stands, once Atlantis lands, it will never fly in space again.

NASA and some politicians are pushing hard for another mission, however, so Atlantis can haul up a final load of supplies in June 2011. The White House — which wants NASA concentrated on getting astronauts to asteroids and Mars in the coming decades — would need to approve any extra flights.

Already, NASA is going through the list of museums interested in Atlantis and Endeavour. Discovery is promised to the Smithsonian Institution.

During a news conference Sunday morning, the Atlantis astronauts were asked where they would like to see their ship wind up. Pilot, Dominic “Tony” Antonelli pointed out that none of them gets to decide. But if he got to pick, Atlantis would retire to his backyard in Houston.

“I get plenty of letters from my home owners” association about leaving my garbage can out and not keeping my grass trimmed, but if I got Atlantis parked in my back yard, that would make all those letters just kind of disappear,” Antonelli said with a smile.

As for Atlantis” more immediate future, the astronauts still need to survey its wings and nose in search of any damage. They”ll perform the job Monday using the newly repaired inspection boom. A spacewalking crewman untangled a cable on the boom last week, allowing the TV camera on the end to tilt properly.

Over at the space station, meanwhile, three of the six residents soon will be checking out. Russia”s Kotov, NASA”s Timothy (TJ) Creamer and Japan”s Soichi Noguchi will depart June 2 in a Soyuz capsule and aim for Kazakhstan.

After more than five months in orbit, Creamer said Sunday he can”t wait to drink something without sipping through a straw and to eat food that stays on the plate. Noguchi yearns for a hot springs bath.

Space Station Alarm Delays Atlantis Crew Spacewalk

The spacewalkers halted a body-conditioning sleepover in a low-pressure chamber on the station after a false depressurization alarm shut down ventilation fans. The problem, which interrupted the sleep of crews on the station and the shuttle Atlantis for a second consecutive night, appeared to stem from a new Russian docking module that arrived at the station on November 12.
Foreman and Bresnik were sleeping inside the station’s Quest airlock when alarms indicated a rapid depressurization of the station. Flight controllers quickly realized it was a false alarm but the system automatically shut down ventilation fans, which in turn allowed dust to swirl in the microgravity environment, triggering false smoke detection alarms. It took the crew about an hour to get the fans working again, prompting NASA to cancel the spacewalkers’ sleepover that was intended to purge nitrogen from their bodies to prevent a dangerous condition known as the bends. Instead, Foreman and Bresnik put on oxygen masks and exercised vigorously on stationary bicycles to rid their bodies of nitrogen before beginning the shortened spacewalk.
Atlantis arrived at the station on Wednesday to deliver spare parts for the station. NASA is stocking the outpost with equipment in hopes of keeping it operational after the US space agency’s shuttles stop flying next year. The Russian, European and Japanese cargo craft that will keep the station supplied with food, water and fuel after the shuttles are retired cannot haul the heavy pumps, tanks and gyroscopes carried aboard the shuttles. Station crewmembers will fly on Russian Soyuz capsules.
During Saturday’s spacewalk, Foreman and Bresnik worked to install communications antennas and set up a cargo attachment mechanism to the station’s truss. Bresnik, making his first spaceflight, was still awaiting word about the birth of his second child. His wife was due to deliver a baby girl on Friday.
