Suicide bomb kills Afghan deputy governor, five others

GHAZNI: A suicide bomber on a motorcycle killed on Tuesday the deputy governor of Afghanistan’s Ghazni province, Mohammad Kazim Allahyar, and five other people, a top police official said.

Allahyar, his son and two bodyguards were killed instantly when the attacker detonated his explosives at the back of their car near the airport in Ghazni city, provincial police chief Delawar Zahid told Reuters.

“Allahyar was on his way to work when a suicide bomber on a motorbike targeted his car (they) were martyred,” Zahid said.

His nephew and a third bodyguard were wounded and died in hospital, Zahid said.

Suicide bomb attacks frequently kill civilians, bodyguards and members of the security forces, and insurgents sometimes execute low-level government officials, but it is relatively rare for them to hit high-level targets.

SANAA: The British ambassador to Yemen on Monday escaped a bombing in Sanaa believed triggered by a suicide attacker but the blast killed an unidentified person, a security official said.

“The ambassador was not hurt” in the attack that targeted his convoy as it headed towards the embassy, said the security official who requested anonymity.

He said that the attack is “believed to be a suicide attack” adding that one person, whose identity has not been determined, was killed.

Witnesses insisted that the bombing was a suicide attack, saying that the bomber was a bit slow in targeting the diplomat”s vehicle and that the attacker”s body was torn to pieces.

Latest updates about Dean Cage, Dean Cage was convicted in 1996 and sentenced to 40 years in prison for the rape of a 15-year-old girl, who, at the time, identified him as her attacker. But Cage always maintained his innocence and asked for DNA tests to prove it. He said his family had even tried to pay for it themselves.

Those efforts fell on deaf ears until he wrote to the Innocence Project, which took his case in 2004.

The New York-based Innocence Project specializes in using DNA to exonerate the falsely convicted.

“The single greatest cause of wrongful convictions is victim misidentification,” said attorney Peter Neufeld, a co-founder of the organization.

Cage, who worked at a Chicago supermarket, said he was home at the time the teenager said she was attacked while walking to school in November 1994.

The teenager gave a composite drawing description to authorities and after it was circulated police brought Cage in as a suspect. The girl identified him as her attacker. Cage was also accused in the rape of a 29-year-old woman, but acquitted of those charges. Evidence at the time discounted Cage as the attacker, Neufeld said.

Finally after years of legal work and a long sought after DNA test, Cage’s conviction was overturned.

The Innocence Project said nationally Cage is now the 217th person exonerated by post-conviction DNA evidence. He is the 29th Illinoisan to be exonerated by DNA evidence. Only Texas, with 31, has more DNA exoneration cases than Illinois.

The conviction was dismissed at the request of the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.

Cage was released from Illinois River Correctional Center in Canton and went straight to his mother’s home on Chicago’s South Side for an all-night celebration with family.

“It didn’t seem like it was real,” he said of life on the outside. “It was really scary. At the same time, it was a blessing.”

Suicide bombers wound 6 in Swat, Pakistan :- A suicide bomber drove his explosives-packed vehicle toward an army convoy but soldiers opened fire, unleashing an explosion that wounded four troops and killed the attacker in Khyber agency Thursday.

The attack occurred in Bara town, not far from North West Frontier Province’s main city, Peshawar, The four troops wounded in the blast were in stable condition in a hospital, a military statement said.

Also, the military said Thursday a suicide bomber blew himself up and wounded two troops as they conducted a raid on an insurgent hide-out in the Swat Valley. Another militant also died in the explosion, it said in a statement.

The northwest has seen a spate of recent attacks. Twenty-two people were killed and more than 150 wounded last Saturday in two suicide car bombings.
