WARSAW: Church bells pealed and emergency sirens blared across Poland at 8:56 a.m. (0656 GMT) Saturday to mark the minute a week earlier that a plane crashed as it attempted to land in Russia, claiming the life of Polish President Lech Kaczynski, his wife and 94 others.

Thousands of Poles massed in Warsaw”s Pilsudski Square for a public memorial service for the victims. But some world leaders canceled their attendance at a state funeral Sunday, citing the volcanic ash cloud hanging over Europe, leaving numerous airports closed.

So far delegations from India, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, New Zealand and Pakistan have canceled plans to attend Sunday”s state funeral, Polish Foreign Ministry spokesman Piotr Paszkowski said.

The crash plunged Poland into a deep grief not seen since the death of Pope John Paul II five years ago.

President Asif Ali Zardari

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan News: President Asif Ali Zardari on late night Thursday transferred the power of amending the Local Government Ordinance to the provinces, giving the fate of the one-time basic democracy in the hands of provincial governments.

“The President has approved the amendments in the Local Government Ordinance 2001 after consulting Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani,” said a statement issued by presidential spokesman Farhatullah Baber.

Terming the act a new-year gift from the President to the nation, Baber declared the transfer of power a step towards provincial autonomy. He said now the provinces can decide the issues – like holding new local bodies’ elections and appointment of administrators, on their own keeping their requirements and on-ground situation in view.

UAA online, University of Alaska Anchorage:- University of Alaska Women’s Bazaar opens holiday shopping with big crowd.

Scarves, jewelry, watercolors and wood carvings were just the beginning of the University Women’s Association 41st annual holiday bazaar, which saw a near-record turnout this weekend inside the University of Alaska Fairbanks Wood Center.

If the attendance level is any indication of a healthy economy, bazaar co-chairwoman Georgene Nielson said, Fairbanks is doing pretty well.

Within 15 minutes of closing Sunday afternoon, the Wood Center was still packed with anxious holiday shoppers eager to find that unique gift with an Alaska flair.

“Even with everything going on in the nation’s economy, we’ve seen a major increase in our sales — dollar wise — than we have in years,” Nielson said. “I think people are really taking advantage of the wonderful vendors and artisans we have here in Alaska when they’re looking for holiday gifts.”

The University Women’s Association has always had strict requirements for its vendors, the better to highlight locally crafted and handmade goods.

“The vendors here each have their own gifts to share,” Nielson said. The association has required that there be no national chain stores or foreign-made goods on sale, and the vendors themselves must show up to share and sell their own crafts.

“There is no middleman involved,” Nielson said. “Anyone buying an item from our bazaar knows that each piece is uniquely crafted and supports our local economy.”More
