COLOMBO: Part-time bowler Tillakaratne Dilshan snapped up two West Indies wickets within the space of three balls to tilt the balance of the second test in Sri Lanka’s favour on the third day on Thursday.

At the close West Indies were 165 for five in reply to Sri Lanka’s 387 for nine declared with play ending 52 minutes after tea due to bad light. West Indies trail by 222 runs.

Dilshan, bowling his off-breaks, first broke a threatening fourth wicket partnership of 83 between Darren Bravo and Brendan Nash. He trapped Nash lbw for 29 with a straight ball which the batsman played for the turn.

Two balls later Bravo, who had been batting confidently, played a loose drive and spooned the ball to cover point where Rangana Herath made a lot of ground and took a spectacular catch inches off the ground. Bravo hit a test best 80.

WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama said on Wednesday that if Republicans want to reject his economic plans, he wants to hear their suggestions on fueling the economy.

“I don’t think that tax cuts alone are going to be a recipe for the kind of expansion that we need,” he said at a White House news conference.

Obama also acknowledged he had not managed the balance well between having the rules of the road for business while making clear to U.S. companies that he wants them to succeed.

“One of the things that has not been managed by me as well as it needed to be was finding the right balance in making sure that businesses have rules of the road and are treating customers fairly … but also making absolutely clear that the only way America succeeds is if businesses are succeeding,” he said. SYDNEY: Australia’s two major political parties are set to end up with an equal number of seats after weekend elections, a well-respected polls analyst said on Monday, suggesting neither party has the edge in forming a government.

Antony Green, a closely watched analyst who uses computer algorithms to project elections results, said on ABC News’ Web site that the ruling Labor party and conservative opposition would each win 73 seats in the 150-seat lower house.

Seventy-six seats are needed for outright victory.

Three independents and one Green MP would hold the balance of power. Antony Green’s projections can change as more votes are counted. The final count could take another week or more finish.

The Australian Eelectoral Commission’s current official tally is 71 seats each for Labor and the conservatives. AGENCIES

WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday urged Iraqi leaders to resolve rows over the March elections and form a new government quickly, as more winning candidates risked being disqualified.

With a major US troop drawdown set for August hanging in the balance, Clinton amplified concerns among US officials over Iraq”s long drawn-out effort to finalize the election results amid factional squabbling.

A judicial panel was set to rule Wednesday on the fate of nine other election-winning candidates who stand to be disqualified in a process that has thrown government formation into disarray.

On Monday the panel eliminated at least one winning candidate and around 50 others who failed to secure parliamentary seats, drawing anger from former premier Iyad Allawi whose secular coalition narrowly won the March 7 vote.

One of those disqualified was a winning candidate from Allawi”s Iraqiya bloc, which has alleged that it is being targeted by officials and religious parties who do not want him to obtain power.

The US Senate voted 68-29 in favor of a 680-billion-dollar defense budget for fiscal year 2010, which sailed through the House of Representatives by a 281-146 margin on October 8 and will now go to President Barack Obama. The new restrictions imposed on Pakistan include efforts to track where US military hardware sent to Pakistan ends up, as well as a warning that US aid to Pakistan must not upset the balance of power in the region.

The legislation instructs the White House to send lawmakers a report every 180 days on progress toward long-term security and stability in Pakistan. The measure’s chief authors, Senators Robert Menendez and Bob Corker, praised Pakistan for its help routing extremists but said they wanted to be sure US military aid goes to fight the “war on terrorism.”
