Denise Richards Adopts a Baby Girl

Denise Richards has adopted a baby girl, she already has 2 daughters by her ex-husband Charlie Sheen. Richards has named her third daughter Eloise Joni in memory of her late mum Joni Richards, who lost her battle with cancer in 2007. Little Eloise is now sister to Sam, 7, and Lola, 5.

Richards’ rep has confirmed the news with a statement;

“Eloise Joni Richards is named after Denise’s mom (Joni), and Denise and her daughters Sami and Lola chose the name Eloise,” the rep said. “Denise and Eloise’s big sisters couldn’t be happier and feel incredibly blessed.”

Richards also tweeted about the news to her two million plus followers;

“Thank you all for your sweet messages,” she Tweeted. “The girls and I are over the moon and so is my dad Grandpa Irv…xo”

Richards has appeared in various films including, Wild Things, Scary Movie 3, Starship Troopers and The World Is Not Enough.

Roadside bomb kills 3 pilgrims in Iraq

BAGHDAD: A roadside bomb killed three pilgrims and wounded 18 in Baghdad ahead of a religious event, an Iraqi Interior Ministry source said on Tuesday.

A police source said three people were killed and 19 wounded by the explosion in the western Baghdad district of Ghazaliya.

Another roadside bomb wounded 14 Shi’ite pilgrims in Khalis, 80 km (50 miles) north of Baghdad, the Diyala province operations centre said.

Shi’ite pilgrims have been gathering around Iraq ahead of Ashura on Friday, which commemorates the death of Prophet Mohammad’s grandson Hussein at the battle of Kerbala in 680. AGENCIES

Flintoff retires from all cricket

Andrew Flintoff announced his retirement from all cricket on Thursday as he admitted defeat in his battle against a persistent right knee injury.
It is with both disappointment and sadness that I am today (Thursday) announcing my retirement from all forms of cricket, former England captain Flintoff said in a statement released by his agents, International Sports Management (ISM).
The decision to end my career came yesterday (Wednesday) after consultation with medical advisers, added the 32-year-old all-rounder, who quit the Test format after helping England regain the Ashes last year. Having been told that my body would no longer stand up to the rigours of cricket, I had no alternative but to retire. I would like to thank my family, Lancashire Cricket Club, England, all my sponsors, friends and advisers for all the help and support they have given me throughout my career.

The yesteryear actress Sadhana is almost a legend. Her films and especially her hairstyle (called Sadhana cut) are still a rage in the country. She is part of Mumbai city’s glorious history of films and yet it comes as a shock to learn how these celebrities who once were worshipped are being treated by a few people.

Presently, residing on the ground floor of Sangeeta building in Santacruz, Sadna’s apartment originally belongs to singer Asha Bhosle. But Sadhana’s second floor neighbours have been giving her a tough time. Yusuf Lakdawala, a builder, has his relatives living the same building as Sadhna, and the actress claims that she has been threatened by the builder that if she doesn’t vacate the flat he would kill her. Yusuf of course denies these allegations and states that he has no stake in the apartment that belongs to Asha. Sadhna says that the row happened over the builder’s need to redevelop the place and she even went to the local Police station several times to report the matter but no action was taken. She has now approached the Commissioner Of Police Sanjeev Dayal and hopes something would come out of it.

But the actress is not alone in her battle against injustice. A not so silent star is fighting the battle for her on the popular networking site twitter. And this star is the mighty Salman Khan who is these days being fondly called as the ‘Robinhood’ Pandey. And true to his Robinhood character, Salman has been garnering support for Sadhana as he tweets, “who is this builder who is making Sadhana aunty’s life miserable, threatening her that he vil cut her to bits nd nobody is doing anything abt it.” He went on to ask for public support as he tweeted, “Can u believe this that in this day n age this kind of stuff happens in our country where a living legend’s life is hell, janta support needed.”

Looking at the response he got, Sallu tweeted, “Itna support n this soon. I believe every thing can b sorted across the table, sum believe under the table all v hv to do is get em across.”

Hope an amicable solution is reached soon and the respected yesteryear star Sadhana can start living a peaceful life again.

Gen Petraeus scraps McChrystal”s strategy

KABUL: Gen David Petraeus, the new US commander in Afghanistan, has scrapped his predecessor”s plan to secure the southern city of Kandahar.

He has decided a full-scale military encirclement and invasion – as American troops had done in Iraq”s Fallujah – was not an appropriate model to tackle the Taliban in the southern capital.

Gen Petraeus”s decision to revise the entire strategy comes just weeks after he arrived in Afghanistan following the abrupt dismissal of Gen Stanley McChrystal for insubordination.

Gen McChrystal had planned a summer conquest of the Taliban in Kandahar to reinvigorate the battle against the Taliban.

But the operation has been repeatedly delayed by concerns that it would not adequately restore the confidence of city residents in the security forces.

Gen Petraeus is reported to believe that the operation must be a broad-ranging counter-insurgency campaign, involving more troops working with local militias.

The plan he inherited was criticised for placing too much emphasis on targeted assassinations of key insurgent leaders and not enough on winning over local residents.

Richard Holbrooke, the US special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, said yesterday that the US-led strategy in southern Afghanistan was undergoing sweeping changes.

“Kandahar is not a military operation like Fallujah,” Mr Holbrooke said. “We have Gen David Petraeus looking at the plan, scrubbing it down, looking at it again.”

President Hamid Karzai has bolstered Gen Petraeus”s efforts by agreeing to a US proposal to pay defectors from the Taliban to form local defence militias.

Mr Holbrooke, who oversees the civilian component of the American campaign in Afghanistan, has been described by Gen Petraeus as his “wing man” in the effort to reverse Taliban gains.

He said that the changes of strategy in the area also included a decision not to destroy poppy crops this year, an action that had in the past “driven” farmers into alliance with the Taliban.

He also said that the Afghan police force in Marjah – which now numbers 60 – could not yet replace thousands of US Marines. Efforts to stabilise Helmand”s Marjah have been bogged down by stronger resistance.

Gen Petraeus recruited prominent military experts who assisted him in the surge of forces that brought stability to Iraq.

Stephen Biddle, a military strategist at the US Council for Foreign Relations, coauthored as suggestion that the US would be successful in Afghanistan if it could set up a strong local government in places like Kandahar.

Defections from the Taliban are crucial to the goal of ending the war within four years but Mr Holbrooke said only insurgent groups that had split with al-Qaeda, and willing to work within the framework of the Afghan constitution would be approached.

More effort was being put into recruiting local allies on a district by district basis.

“The reintegration policy is the key to a successful counter-insurgency campaign,” he said. “As for reconciliation, it”s out there somewhere. We”ve talked about it. The US will support Afghan-led reconciliation and by that we mean we need to know what”s going on. Not much is going on now, and nothing is going on with the United States.”

Mr Holbrooke said Pakistan had dramatically increased its co-operation with the US in the battle against the Taliban but he criticised Islamabad”s continuing support for the Haqqani network of insurgents.

“Without Pakistan”s participation, this (Afghan) war could go on indefinitely,” he said. “There”s much more co-operation at every level

“But I don”t want to mislead you, it is not yet where we hope it will be. What we talk about is the Haqqani network. Let”s be very specific. It”s a real problem.”
