ISTANBUL: Turkish police have detained 12 people in Istanbul suspected of providing support to al Qaeda militants fighting NATO forces in Afghanistan, a senior security official told Reuters on Tuesday.
The detentions come just days after four men were arrested in west and southwest Turkey on suspicion of fundraising for militants and a fifth on suspicion of designing computer programmes to jam the controls of drone aircraft.
Istanbul police declined to comment.
Turkish police often arrest suspected Islamist militants and describe them as having links to al Qaeda, though details seldom emerge. Around 120 al Qaeda suspects were rounded up last
January in raids mostly carried out in the southeast.
Of the five arrested last week the four suspected of fundraising have since been released pending trial.

Kalat: Both kidnapped nephews of Jamali recovered
Both the kidnapped nephews of former Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali have been recovered.
Jamal-ud-Din Jamali and Ghulam Mustafa Jamali were kidnapped ten days ago who were finally recovered from near Kalat with the help of tribals of the area. Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali told that no ransom money has been paid to the kidnappers; rather his nephews have been released due to negotiations.
Drone attack kills 8 in North Wazirirtan
Footage of NATO attack in Pakistani territory has been released. On the other hand, a drone attack on a mosque has killed 8 people in North Waziristan.
The footage has been released which shows NATO helicopters flying inside Pakistan. Meanwhile, a drone attack on a mosque in North Waziristan left at least 8 people dead. The US drone fired two missiles on Bilal Mosque in Mir Ali Bazaar which demolished the mosque completely. According to initial reports, the drone attack killed 8 people while several others sustained injuries. All the injured were shifted to the hospital for medical aid. Drone remained hovering over Mir Ali area after the attack. According to the official sources, all the people, who were killed, belonged to Germany.
India releases 31 Pakistani prisoners

NEW DELHI: Indian government has released 31 Pakistani prisoners as goodwill gesture and they would be handed over to Pakistani authorities today (Wednesday) at Wagah border.
As per the reports of a private TV channel, the Indian authorities would hand over 31 prisoners to Pakistani concerned authorities here at Wahga Border in Lahore today.
Those who have been released are 7 fishermen and 24 others civilian prisoners who had been held in Indian jails despite having completed their jail terms.
Sources said more than 150 Pakistani fishermen and at least 500 civilians are still languishing in Indian prisons.
This exchange comes in response to Pakistan releasing 442 Indian fishermen from jails over the last month.

Hafeez Sheikh elected unopposed member Senate
KARACHI: Federal Advisorr for Finance Abdul Hafeez Sheikh has been elected unopposed on senate seat on the ticket of Pakistan People”s Party (PPP).
Election Commission Sindh has issued a public notice of his success. Returning officer of provincial Election Commission Sono Khan Baloch said Dr. Sheikh has been elected unopposed under Senate Election Act 1975. A public notice has also issued in this connection, he added.
Hospital holds body for nonpayment of dues
KARACHI: A policeman wounded in a firing incident in Karachi succumbed to injuries in a hospital but hospital management has refused to release the body to relatives till the payment of the bill.
The body has been handed over to the relatives when the news has been aired at Geo News.
Two policemen Wahid Bux and Salim Zaki sustained injuries in a firing incident two days ago and admitted in a private hospital at Stadium Road. Wahid Bux has succumbed to injuries last night but the hospital management holds the body for six hours due to non-payment of the bill. The body has been released to relatives after airing the news on Geo News.
The brother of Wahid Bux told Geo News that his brother’s will be buried in ancestral village in Taunsa Sharif.
