The hunt is on for a 17-year old newcomer to play the Big B’s daughter in a remake of a Belgian film. The mega-star’s first official remake of a foreign film this untitled Hindi version of the Belgian director Dominique Deruddre’s Oscar-nominated film Iedereen Beroemd (Everybody’s Famous) is special because of its theme.
The Big B loves the idea of doing a father-daughter film.
Amitabh Bachchan who has done innumerable father-son films, both as the son (Trishul, Shakti) and as the father (Sarkar, Waqt) is now all set to embark on a unique emotional father-daughter film. A theme that the Big B has been eager to explore. The Belgian film is about a father who dreams of making his daughter a singer.
It’s also his first bona fide remake of a foreign film.
Says the film’s producer, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, “When I saw the Belgian film I was completely bowled over. The father-daughter story is so Indian. We immediately sought out the rights and purchased it. Only Amitji can play the father. The hunt is on for a 17-year old girl to play his daughter.”

Europe seek heightened global role of emerging Asian giants

BRUSSELS: Europe sought a heightened global role with Asia’s emerging giants Monday at talks ranging from trade to climate change between nations representing more than half the world’s population.

The two-day Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) of 46 nations, followed by separate EU summits with China and South Korea on Wednesday, opens amid renewed tension between Beijing and Tokyo over disputed islands in the East China Sea.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, indisputably star guest of the talks, could hold a face-to-face meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan to ease the dispute, diplomats said.

For the European Union, the get-together of dozens of heads of state and government in the gilded Goya-hung halls of the Belgian royal palace opens a window of opportunity to strengthen ties with the Asia region at a time of fast global change.

70e98d1218dead1 20 Dead in DR Congo Plane CrashAt least 20 people were killed after a plane flown by the Belgian head of a local airline crashed while trying to land in western Democratic Republic of Congo, officials said.

The Filair Czech-made twin turboprop crashed Wednesday afternoon at Bandundu after a 300-kilometre (200-mile) flight from the capital Kinshasa, and apparently running out of fuel, Vicky Mboso Muteba said.

“They have brought out the people, we have 19 bodies in the morgue,” said Mboso, the deputy governor of Bandundu province, northeast of Kinshasa.

One of two survivors later died in hospital. The owner of the private airline Filair, Belgian Daniel Philemotte, 62, was at the controls of the Let-410 plane and was among those killed, along with the co-pilot and stewardess, he added.

Mboso said that after an abortive attempt to land, the aircraft turned away and crashed towards the edge of Bandundu city, hitting an earthen house whose residents had managed to flee in time.

There was no explosion, said Mboso, who was one of the first to arrive on the site along with soldiers from MONUC, the UN mission in the Congo.

“Subject to expert opinion… the presumed cause could be a lack of fuel,” he said.

The Czech-made Let-410 normally carries up to 19 passengers.

An official of Kinshasa’s small city-centre Ndolo airport, from which the flight took off, confirmed the crash, but did not provide any additional information.

A Belgian diplomat in Kinshasa said Philemotte was a well-known businessman in the country, and had recently married a Congolese.

All of the country’s 50-odd registered airlines have been placed on a European Union blacklist, banning them from flying into European airspace.

Palestinian, Arab representatives at UN demand an independent probe of Israeli raid

UNITED NATIONS (AP) – As the U.N. Security Council held an emergency meeting on Israel’s deadly commando raid on ships taking humanitarian aid to the blockaded Gaza Strip, representatives of the Palestinian and other Arab governments called for an independent investigation of the incident.

Backed by a number of council members, they also called for Israel to release the ships and humanitarian activists immediately, and to allow them to deliver their goods.sraeli marines stormed a Turkish aid ship bound for Gaza on Monday. The incident, in which the Israeli military said at least nine pro-Palestinian activists were killed, sparked widespread condemnation. d193c5daa847361c un security council

Many council members echoed earlier statements by their their governments in denouncing or criticizing the Israeli action, and said it was time for Israel’s three-year-old blockade of Hamas-controlled Gaza to be fully lifted.

“This is tantamount to banditry and piracy,” Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told the council. “It is murder conducted by a state.” Most of those who died in the incident were Turks, according to one senior Israeli officer.

The United States, Israel’s principal ally on the council, spoke in guarded terms. Deputy U.N. Ambassador Alejandro Wolff said Washington deeply regretted the loss of life and wanted a “credible and transparent investigation” by Israel.

Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian U.N. observer, said the attack on unarmed civilians in international waters was a “war crime,” and called for “decisive action” including an “independent, impartial investigation.”

After statements from the 15 council members as well as Israel and the Palestinians, the council moved into closed consultations to consider possible action.

e63286fce5502062 stosurPARIS (AFP) – Samantha Stosur of Australia stunned four-times former winner Justine Henin at the French Open on Monday to wreck hopes of a dream quarter-final between the Belgian and top seed Serena Williams.

It was the first time that Henin had lost since the second round in 2004, a 24-match unbeaten run that was the third best on record and it put a spoke in the comeback trail she has been blazing since the start of the year.

It was also the second straight year that the fast-rising Gold Coast resident Stosur has reached the last eight in Paris, having lost in last year’s semis to eventual winner Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia.

“Going into a quarterfinal, I couldn’t probably hope to be in a better position, I don’t think,” the Australian said.

“Obviously beating Justine is going to give me lots and lots of confidence for the next match.”

The other quarter-final in the top half of the draw will see fourth seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia take on Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan, the first player from that country to reach the last eight of a Grand Slam.

In sharp contrast to the Henin-Stosur thriller, which the Australian won 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, Williams breezed past Shahar Peer of Israel 6-2, 6-2.37c5566f09stosur stosur

The American insisted she was not shocked by Henin’s dismissal.

“She is no pushover,” she said of Stosur. “She has beaten me before and I shall have to play my best game,” she said.

“You can never underestimate anyone and Sam is a wonderful claycourt player.

“She has a good chance to go all the way. She is fast, she is strong and she has a great serve. She plays a real allround game.”

Henin missed the 2008 and 2009 French Opens after retiring in May 2008 claiming that she had lost all motivation and wanted a change of lifestyle, but returned to action at the start of the year in Australia.

She quickly jumped out into a 2-0 lead and a second break of serve in the seventh game allowed her to pocket the opener 6-2 in just 32 minutes.

But just when it looked like the Belgian was heading for a straightforward win, Stosur, who is ranked a career-best seventh in the world, upped her game.

She turned on the power with her serve to edge ahead and then stunned Henin with an array of attacking shots that left the Belgian shaking her head in frustration.

Stosur pocketed the second set and she stuck with her gameplan to go for her shots and attack the net at every opportunity in the decider, with Henin looking to lure her into a battle of baseliners. stosur

Games went with serve until 2-2 when an increasingly uncomfortable-looking Henin failed to convert two points for a 3-2 lead and then double-faulted to hand the break to the Australian.

Stosur had the initiative with her own usually reliable serve to follow, but she promptly played a poor game allowing Henin to claw her way back into the match at 3-3.

She was handed a second chance though three games later when Henin dished up three unforced errors and a double fault allowing the Australian to take a 5-4 lead.

This time she gleefully accepted it, finishing off the Belgian on her second match point.

Henin said that she had felt more nervous and uncomfortable on court than usual having played for five straight days because of a succession of rain delays.

“It’s not easy to play so many days in a row.” she said. “Maybe a day off would have been welcome.”

“I wanted the adventure to continue but I wasn’t at my best today and she took her chances. It’s difficult when you return to this level.”

The only trouble Williams had against Peer came right at the start when she dropped the first seven points of the match as she struggled to get to grips with the cold, blustery conditions out on the Philippe Chatrier centre-court.

But she promptly won the next nine as she moved up the gears and then broke Peer for a second time to take a 4-2 lead.

From there she coasted through, her serve and ground strokes far too heavy and penetrating for the Israeli.

The win kept alive the American’s hopes of winning the French Open for just the second time, eight years after her first triumph, and also kept her on track for the fabled calender year Grand Slam having won the Australian Open title in January.
