US cops nab go-kart hauling Mexican pot

 

U.S. border cops in far-west Arizona have seized an off-road go-kart and trailer packed with marijuana, in the latest bizarre attempt by Mexican smugglers to beat beefed up border security.

 

The Border Patrol s Yuma sector said agents and officers from the Cocopah Tribal Police Department spotted the single-seater go-kart hauling a trailer through the desert near Yuma, Arizona on Tuesday night and gave chase.

 

The driver abandoned the homemade vehicle, which was spray painted a desert beige, fitted with knobbly off-road tires, and towing a trailer packed with 217 pounds of marijuana, about 100 yards from the border, and fled back to Mexico.

 

“It s not something that we see very often,” agent Spencer Tippets said of the attempt. “Smuggling organizations are always trying to adjust and change their tactics,” he added.

 

In recent years U.S. authorities have added additional fencing, agents and technologies including unmanned surveillance drones to tighten security along Arizona s porous border with Mexico.

 

Drug traffickers have responded with a variety of ruses including strapping marijuana loads to low-flying microlight aircraft and even hurling it over the border fence using medieval style catapults.

 

The go-kart and marijuana, worth an estimated $108,600, were turned over to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. No arrests were made.

Afridi ton fires Pakistan to record 385-7

DAMBULLA, Sri Lanka: Shahid Afridi smashed a brilliant 124 off 60 balls as Pakistan piled up their highest one-day total, with 385-7 against Bangladesh in their Asia Cup match Monday.

Afridi plundered 17 boundaries and four sixes after he won the toss in a match that held only academic interest after India and Sri Lanka qualified for Thursday”s final.

Pakistan”s total surpassed their previous best of 371-9 against Sri Lanka in Nairobi in 1996, a match in which Afridi cracked 102 off 40 balls.

The talking point of the innings was the bizarre dismissal of Umar Amin, who was run out by Mohammad Mahmudullah while moving from the off to the leg-side at the non-striker”s end after completing a single.

Amin”s bat was in the air as he walked across the popping crease and was clearly not trying to steal a single when Mahmudullah broke the stumps.

Umpires Billy Doctrove and Bruce Oxenford referred the decision to the TV umpire, who declared Amin run out.

Putin nominated for ‘Event of the year’ Award

MOSCOW: Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has been nominated for a music award honouring his contributions to hip-hop and rap.

Muz TV, which is Russia”s answer to MTV, nominated Putin, 57, for its “Event of the Year” award for his bizarre appearance last November on the televised final of a rap “battle for respect”.

The nomination is something of a surprise, since at the time Putin looked awkward and stood motionless among a crowd of teenagers as they writhed to a noisy rap song.

At another point, as a hip-hop groove played in the background, Putin delivered a speech that mixed teenage street slang with observations on the hip hop scene – about which he apparently knew little.

Critics dismissed the move as a cynical ploy to boost his already stellar ratings but Putin denied that, saying he wanted to reach out to young people to warn them of the dangers of drugs and vodka.

“It would be impossible to perform so-called low risk break dancing and still less high risk break dancing while on drugs,” the Telegraph quoted him as telling his teenage audience, without apparent irony.

The awards ceremony will take place in Moscow later this month, though it is unclear whether Putin will attend or indeed win.

Hurricane watch

Weather forecasters in the US predicted the storm would head towards the US later this week, where the authorities have issued a hurricane watch for the US Gulf Coast.

“A hurricane watch is in effect from Grand Isle, Louisiana to the Mississippi/Alabama border. This watch does not include the city of New Orleans [Louisiana],” a statement from the US National Hurricane Centre said.

“A hurricane watch means that hurricane conditions are possible within the watch area … generally within 36 hours.”

Forecasters declared Ida a hurricane on Thursday as it passed off the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua, bringing heavy rains and destroying homes.

The rains caused thousands of people to seek shelter out of the storm’s path.

The storm weakened into a tropical storm before reaching hurricane status again late on Saturday with sustained winds of near 145kph, US forecasters said.

“His eyes were a blank stare, and he was just trying to breathe,” said Cal quarterback Kevin Riley, who described what Best looked like after the devasting injury.  Riley blocked for Best on the play, which was a direct snap to the running back.

Cal, who played Oregon State, lost 31-14.

It’s another bizarre incident in a bizarre season for Harris, who was benched for the game at Cincinnati two weeks ago.

Harris has a de-escalating roster bonus in 2012 that has already been reduced to $6.5 million. The bonus is tied to playing time and Pro Bowl appearances, and Harris stands almost no chance of hitting the playing time threshold of 74 percent for this season. That’s going to be a nearly impossible figure after he missed one entire game and was kicked out of the very beginning of another one.

Harris faces potential discipline from the league over this, a penalty that will likely come in the form of a fine.

We’ll see if Harris is around to answer questions about the incident after the game.
