President and the Co-chairman Pakistan People’s Party, Asif Ali Zardari on Friday said that PPP is not looking for any revenge, adding, democracy is the best revenge.
“We were not and we are not still looking for any revenge. We are looking to get the history corrected. We are looking to punish those who deserve punishment.”
He said that the United Nations Commission’s report endorses the PPP CEC’s views which it expressed on the third day of the martyrdom of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.
President Zardari said this while speaking at a dinner hosted by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani in honour of the members of Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Reforms at the Prime Minister’s House on Friday night.
The President said democracy is the best revenge, adding, “I think the 18th Amendment is a better revenge from the dictators of all times than anything could have been in the light of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s mind-set and in the memories of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.”
He congratulated all the members of parliament, the Prime Minister, all the people involved, the committee members and the party workers for achieving consensus on the 18th Amendment.
President Zardari said all the political parties and the people in the country have always been supportive of democracy and were united for the cause of democracy.
“All of you have always been very supportive of democracy…, we might have differences, we may have even political opposition to each other. But for one thing we have always been united, that is democracy.
“And that is what I symbolize today standing in the PM House lawn. All of us believe in democracy. Democracy is a thing that Pakistanis are with and which is like Quaid-e-Azam said part of our marrow and cannot be taken away from us”, he remarked.
The President, while appreciating the approval of 18th Amendment Bill, however added that there was a lot more do. “All these amendments have to be implemented, the NFC Award has to be implemented.
So I will very humbly request everybody and all the parliamentarians and all the political parties to stay together as they have been in the past to look forward to getting things done and to get the amendments implemented”, he added.
The President said there was a need to remain united to make sure that powers are transferred to provinces and the capacity of provinces is developed to absorb the new responsibilities that are being taken to them under the 18th Amendment.
“Hopefully we will be doing this together with the cooperation and with the support of all political forces in the country”, he added.
The President was also appreciative of the Prime Minister for keeping the house together and keeping the reconciliation policy of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto together.
