Cop movie ”Elite Squad 2” outguns ”Avatar” in Brazil

SAO PAULO: “Elite Squad 2,” a Brazilian movie mixing explosive action with political intrigue, has become Brazil”s top movie of all time, besting even the US blockbuster “Avatar” at the national box office, producers and industry specialists said.
The movie, a sequel to a 2007 original that also became a huge success, has taken 60.5 million dollars in Brazilian ticket sales since its premiere three months ago, topping the 60.4 million dollars “Avatar” pocketed over a similar period, the industry outlet Filme B said.
“The film has grabbed the title of the biggest box office hit in Brazilian cinema history, topping the blockbuster ”Avatar” by James Cameron,” the producers of the movie crowed on their website.
The launch of “Elite Squad 2″ in Brazil coincided with a spectacular real-life operation by the crack police squad of its title that swept brutal drug gangs out of a nest of slums in Rio de Janeiro.
It is to get its international showing next month at the Sundance Film Festival in the United States.

Yash Raj Films to launch youth films division
After venturing into the TV space last year, Yash Raj Films, one of the country’s top production houses is all set to launch a new films division that would specifically target the youth. The division which is apparently called Yash Raj Youth will work towards promoting new, young and fresh talent.
Most of the actors, directors, script-writers who will be working for this division will be youngsters. Commenting on this, Rafiq Gangjee, VP- Marketing and Communications YRF said, “Yes…we are launching a new youth films division. However, we will sign new talent on the basis of the requirement of the script and characters, not necessarily limited to the 16-22 age groups.”
Omi Vaidya to play one of the lead roles in The Italian Job remake
One actor who seems to have benefitted the most from the success of 3 Idiots is Omi Vaidya. Omi, who played the role of the nerdy Chatur Ramalingam in the blockbuster film to perfection, has now bagged some really plum projects.
Only recently Omi was signed by Madhur Bhandarkar to play one of the lead roles alongside Ajay Devgn and Emraan Hashmi in the rom-com Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji and even as he begins shooting for that film, the talented actor has bagged yet another prestigious project.
Director duo Abbas-Mustan have roped in Omi to play a pivotal role in their remake of the Hollywood hit- The Italian Job. – Shares in Netflix Inc (NFLX.O), Blockbuster Inc (BBI.N) and Redbox owner Coinstar Inc (CSTR.O) climbed on Monday after a Wall Street Journal report that Movie Gallery will close all its U.S. stores.
The liquidation of Movie Gallery Inc (MVGRQ.PK), which also operates the Hollywood Video chain, means the marquee will be taken down for a company that once thrived by serving rural customers. Its exit from the industry may leave 300 million annual rentals up for grabs, analysts estimated.
Movie Gallery and long-time competitor Blockbuster have suffered from the flight of customers to mail-service Netflix and the $1 per-day rentals from Redbox’s bright red kiosks.
The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed sources, was first to report that Movie Gallery planned to close its remaining U.S. stores.
Before this latest development, the company had already started on plans to close more than half of its 2,415 stores, and over the next couple months the rest will close, the newspaper’s website said.
Movie Gallery could not be reached for comment.
Michael Pachter, an analyst with Wedbush Morgan Securities, said that with Movie Gallery liquidating, about 300 million annual movie rental transactions are up for grabs.
“The old Hollywood Video stores overlap very nicely with Blockbuster, so Blockbuster should compete for probably 75 million of those,” Pachter said.
He added that video-on-demand and pay-per-view providers also will gain some of Movie Gallery’s old customers, as will the rental industry’s two high-flyers, Redbox and Netflix.
“It sure opens up the opportunity to put a Redbox in front of every closed Movie Gallery,” Pachter said.
Movie Gallery filed for bankruptcy for the second time in three years in February, after sales fell and losses mounted. At the time, the company had roughly 19,100 employees.
“What did the typewriter manufacturer do wrong when IBM put them out of business with the PC?” Pachter said.
Shares in Coinstar, which rose Friday following surprisingly strong quarterly results for its Redbox unit, climbed 7.4 percent on Monday to $47.64

Sandra Bullock has filed for divorce from her husband, Jesse James, and is adopting a baby boy as a single parent, a story posted Wednesday on People magazine’s website said.
“Yes, I have filed for divorce,” the 45-year-old Oscar-winning actress said in an interview. “I’m sad and I am scared.”
Bullock and James, 41, began the adoption process four years ago, the report said, and brought 3 1/2-month-old Louis Bardo Bullock home in January but decided to keep the news to themselves until after the Oscars. The baby was born in New Orleans, the story said.
James and Bullock separated in March after five years of marriage, following reports that James had been unfaithful. The motorcycle mogul publicly apologized to Bullock and his three children.
He recently returned home after a 30-day stay in a treatment facility where he sought help for “personal issues,” the story on People’s website said.
Bullock won the Oscar for best actress this year for her role in the blockbuster hit “The Blind Side.”
Taiwan Man Dies after Watching ‘Avatar’

TAIPEI : A 42-year-old Taiwanese man with a history of high blood pressure has died of a stroke likely triggered by over-excitement from watching the blockbuster ‘Avatar’ in 3D, a doctor said on Tuesday.
The man, identified only by his surname Kuo, started to feel unwell during the screening earlier this month in the northern city of Hsinchu and was taken to hospital.
Kuo, who suffered from hypertension, was unconscious when he arrived at the Nan Men General Hospital and a scan showed that his brain was haemorrhaging, emergency room doctor Peng Chin-chih said.
“It’s likely that the over-excitement from watching the movie triggered his symptoms.
Kuo died 11 day later from the brain haemorrhage, and the China Times newspaper said it was the first death linked to watching James Cameron’s science-fiction epic “Avatar”.
Film blogging sites have reported complaints of headaches, dizziness, nausea and blurry eyesight from viewers of “Avatar” and other movies rich in 3D imagery.
