The Meteor shower on August 13th too are going to be significant and no less than what was observed last night.

Though the meteors have been falling from the sky for the whole of last month and even in August a NASA report predicted the fall to become intense on 11th, 12th and 13th August.

It is said that the best time for viewing meteors during the northern hemisphere’s summer months is during the Perseid meteor shower. This shower is active during the second half of July and throughout most of August. It is most active near August 12, when the Earth passes near the core of the Perseid material.

Viewing conditions for this shower depend on the observer’s latitude and the phase of the moon on August 12. This activity is visible over most of the Earth except for the extreme southern hemisphere, where the radiant never rises above the horizon. There are also problems viewing this activity from extreme northern latitudes as the nights are very short this time of year from that part of the Earth.

The optimum latitudes lie between 20 and 40 degrees north latitude where the Perseid radiant can achieve a favorable altitude above the horizon and the length of total darkness is at least 6 hours long.

The fire began at about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday near Bonny Doon, an isolated community three miles up in the hills from Highway 1.

Mandatory evacuations have been ordered along Last Chance Road, Swanton Road, Warrella Truck Trail and Rancho del Oso. An evacuation center has been set up at the Pacific School in Davenport, and the American Red Cross has established a shelter at Vintage Church.

In June 2008, the Martin Fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains near Bonny Doon burned 520 acres, destroying three residences and eight outbuildings and damaging two others. The cost of the fire surpassed $5.4 million.
