Haiti Earthquake Update
Haiti Earthquake Update, American Airlines said passengers were boarding one of its planes at Port-au-Prince’s airport in Haiti when the earthquake hit Tuesday, causing damage at the airport.
American Airlines Flight 1908 was scheduled to depart from Haiti at 5:30 p.m. local time but took off instead at 6:41 p.m. after the runway was inspected, said Andrea Huguely, an American spokeswoman in Fort Worth, Texas.
The plane landed safely in Miami at 8:33 p.m. and American doesn’t have any planes on the ground in Haiti at present, the spokeswoman added.
The American spokeswoman said the airline was unaware of any casualties at the Port-au-Prince airport.
But she said the airport sustained damage in the earthquake. The airport was closed Tuesday night and would remain closed Wednesday, she added.
Forty-nine passengers and 11 crew members departed on Flight 1908 to Miami. Originally 176 passengers were scheduled to board the Boeing 767 jet, but the majority chose to stay behind, according to the spokeswoman.
American has three flights a day between Haiti and Miami, one a day between Haiti and Fort Lauderdale and one a day between Haiti and New York’s JFK airport.
Separately, Spirit Airlines Inc. said in a statement Tuesday that it “is working on a relief effort” in Haiti. The Miramar, Florida-based carrier didn’t provide any immediate details on that effort.
Spirit said it has canceled two scheduled flights Wednesday between Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Port-au-Prince.
“Spirit will reinstate flights as soon as the airport in Port-au-Prince opens,” it added in a statement.
