Chris Gayle hit seven fours and two sixes in his 60 balls inning. Gayle completed his maiden fifty in 47 balls.
After Ganguly’s departure, Gayle put on another solid partnership of 82 runs for the second wicket with Owais Shah (31) to help Knight Riders post 156-run target for Mumbai Indians.
Owais Shah slammed three fours to score a 23-ball 31 for the Knight Riders.
Skipper Sourav Ganguly (31) was first to go for Knight Riders after he put up a solid 70-run opening partnership with Chris Gayle.
Ganguly hit five fours in his 34-ball knock before being clean bowled by former international teammate Harbhajan Singh in the 11th over.
Ganguly started his innings with a bang as he hit medium pacer Ryan McLaren for three consecutive fours in the third over of the match.
Earlier, Knight Riders skipper Sourav Ganguly won the toss and decided to bat against Mumbai at Brabourne stadium.
Their winning streaks snapped, hosts Mumbai as well as visitors Kolkata would be anxious to regain that momentum as they clash in the 17th IPL match.
Sachin Tendulkar-led MI, after starting off their campaign in great style by winning the opening two ties, came a cropper at the Brabourne Stadium last night against a highly-disciplined effort by Anil Kumble’s Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Sourav Ganguly-captained KKR too began their campaign after two largely unsuccessful editions by fashioning upset away victories against defending champions Deccan Chargers and runners-up RCB before losing the next two ties.
These two charismatic captains, who have rubbed shoulders over more than a decade and a half for India, would be anxious to rediscover the magic potion for their teams to cut the losing streak before it spoils their campaign.

Virender Sehwag Fastest Double Century in Test Cricket
MUMBAI : Virender Sehwag Fastest Double Century in Test Cricket, Virender Sehwag smashed a scintillating unbeaten double century as India turned the tables on Sri Lanka in the third and final cricket Test on Thursday.
Watch Live Cricket
Sehwag made 284 not out to lift the hosts to 443-1 by stumps on the second day at the Brabourne stadium in reply to Sri Lanka’s first innings total of 393.
The Delhi opener has so far hit 40 boundaries and seven sixes in his 239-ball innings, his sixth knock of 200 or more, two of which were converted into triple hundreds.
If he makes 16 more runs on Friday to reach 300, Sehwag will become the first batsman in history to score three triple-centuries. Australian legend Don Bradman and West Indian great Brian Lara have two each.
Sehwag made light of the bounce and turn on the Brabourne stadium to share two double-century partnerships during the run-riot, cheered by 15,000 boisterous home fans.
He put on 221 for the first wicket with Murali Vijay (87) and 222 for the unbroken second with Rahul Dravid, whose share in the partnership was 62.
Vijay, playing the Test only because Gautam Gambhir was unavailable due to his sister’s wedding, matched his partner’s audacious strokeplay with 10 boundaries and a six.

Vijay became Sri Lanka’s lone success of the day when he was trapped leg-before by left-arm spinner Rangana Herath before tea when he missed an attempted sweep.
India scored 168 runs from 27 overs in the post-lunch session and 183 more in 34 overs in the final two hours to increase Sri Lanka’s misery.
Off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, the world’s leading bowler with 788 wickets, conceded 119 runs in 20 wicketless overs, while Herath went for 112 runs in his 22 overs.
Sehwag appeared to carry on from his 131 in the second Test in Kanpur last week, which India won by an innings and 144 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
When he reached 48 by lofting Herath for a six over long-off, Sehwag went past the 6,000-run mark in his 72nd Test.
Sehwag reached his double century with four boundaries in one over from seamer Nuwan Kulasekara after tea.
Earlier, Sri Lanka were dismissed 25 minutes after the start when they resumed their first innings at the overnight total of 366-8.
All-rounder Angelo Mathews was run out on 99 as he attempted a second run to reach his maiden Test century after playing a shot to deep square-leg.
Sachin Tendulkar swooped on the ball and rifled in a return to wicket-keeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who broke the stumps a split second before Mathews made his ground.
Mathews, who was on 86 overnight, hit two boundaries and a two in Shanthakumaran Sreesanth’s first over to race to 96, but fell in trying to reach his century in a hurry.
Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh was India’s most successful bowler with 4-112, while left-arm slow bowler Pragyan Ojha took 3-101.

India recall Sreesanth for Sri Lanka Test Series
Indian Selectors have given a surprise recall to temperamental fast bowler Sreesanth in its 15-man squad for the first two Tests against Sri Lanka. Sreesanth is on a final warning from the BCCI to keep a check on his on-field behaviour. The fast bowler was also warned by the Kerala Cricket Association for skipping their practice sessions. Sreesanth by the way is the Captain of the Kerala Ranji Team and has been a match-winner for India with 4 four-wicket hauls and 1 fifer in the 14 Tests he has played till date.
The 26-year-old Sreesanth has been selected ahead of Ashish Nehra who had decent success in his ODI comeback. Sreesanth, however scores over the other bowlers because of a combination of pace, swing and seam. The Kerala pacer has this gift of bowling with a totally upright seam unlike many other bowlers. He now joins Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma as the third pacer in the squad. Zaheer Khan comes back into international cricket after a lay off due to a shoulder injury. Batting wise there are no surprises really other than the presence of two reserve players in Murali Vijay and S Badrinath, both from Tamil Nadu.
India has picked three spinners with Hyderabad’s young left armer Pragyan Ojha joining the duo of Harbhajan Singh and Amit Mishra, who are both certain to be in the playing XI. The first two Tests are at Ahmedabad and Kanpur while the third and final Test is at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
India Test Squad : MS Dhoni (Captain and Wicket Keeper), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Sreesanth, Amit Mishra, Pragyan Ojha, Murali Vijay and S Badrinath.
