NEW YORK: Police reopened the Brooklyn Bridge Saturday evening after more than 700 anti-Wall Street protesters were arrested for blocking traffic lanes and attempting an unauthorized march across the span.
The arrests took place when a large group of marchers, participating in a second week of protests by the Occupy Wall Street movement, broke off from others on the bridge’s pedestrian walkway and headed across the Brooklyn-bound lanes.
“Over 700 summonses and desk appearance tickets have been issued in connection with a demonstration on the Brooklyn Bridge late this afternoon after multiple warnings by police were given to protesters to stay on the pedestrian walkway, and that if they took roadway they would be arrested,” a police spokesman said.
“Some complied and took the walkway without being arrested. Others proceeded on the Brooklyn-bound vehicular roadway and were. The bridge was re-opened to traffic at 8:05 p.m. (0005 GMT Sunday 2/oct/11).”
Most of those who were arrested were taken into custody off the bridge, issued summonses and released.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene on the famous suspension bridge as a sea of police officers surrounded the protesters using orange mesh netting.
Some protesters tried to get away as officers started handcuffing members of the group. Dozens of protesters were seen handcuffed and sitting on the span as three buses were called in to take them away, witnesses and organizers said.
The march started about 3:30 p.m. from the protesters’ camp in Zuccotti Park in downtown Manhattan near the former World Trade Center. Members of the group have vowed to stay at the park through the winter.
CELEBRITY SUPPORT
In addition to what they view as excessive force and unfair treatment of minorities, including Muslims, the movement is also protesting against home foreclosures, high unemployment and the 2008 bailouts.
Filmmaker Michael Moore and actress Susan Sarandon have stopped by the protesters’ camp, which is plastered with posters with anti-Wall Street slogans and has a kitchen and library, to offer their support.
Friday evening, more than 1,000 demonstrators, including representatives of labor organizations, held a peaceful march to police headquarters a few blocks north of City Hall to protest what they said was a heavy-handed police response the previous week. No arrests were reported.
A week ago, police arrested about 80 members of Occupy Wall Street near the Union Square shopping district as the marchers swarmed onto oncoming traffic. AGENCIES

Firdous Awan Presents Crown To Sania Mirza At Reception
Pakistani Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan, cricketer Sohail Tanvir and singer Waris Baig attended the wedding reception of Shoaib Malik and Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza Thursday night.
Awan, population welfare minister who represented the Pakistani government at the reception, presented a crown to Sania on behalf of the people of Sialkot, the home town of Shoaib. She also handed over gifts from Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to the newly-wed couple.
The reception, held at Taj Krishna hotel, was attended by leader of opposition and Telugu Desam Party president N. Chandrababu Naidu, Hindi film actor Raza Murad and Telugu actors like Nagarjuna, Amla and Venkatesh. However, several Bollywood personalities invited for the reception, stayed away.
Sahara Group chairman Subroto Roy, industrialist G.V.K. Reddy, who sponsored Sania ever since she started playing tennis at the age of 10, and eminent personalities from different walks of life attended the reception.
Sania’s family had made elaborate arrangements for the reception, where 1,000 guests were invited. “It is now the turn of some Indian to go to Pakistan and bring a bride. Pakistanis should be indebted to us for giving them such a good girl in marriage,” said Raza Murad, a friend of Sania’s father Imran Mirza.
Several prominent sportspersons and film personalities from Bollywood stayed away reportedly due to the controversy surrounding the marriage.
Shoaib divorced his first wife Ayesha Siddiqui last week and married Sania on Monday. The serious allegations leveled by Ayesha against the Pakistani cricketer made it a controversial marriage.
However, unfazed by the controversy, the Pakistani minister landed with gifts for Sania. “This crown is a gift of love and affection from the people of Sialkot, which is also my home town,” said Awan.
She hoped the marriage of the two celebrities would help strengthen the ties between India and Pakistan. Awan, who is on a five-day visit to India at the invitation of union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, reiterated that the newly-wed couple would be brand ambassadors of the Pakistan population welfare ministry. “We are aware of the legal process in India and the issue of passport will be resolved very soon,” she said when asked about Shoaib’s passport, which is still with a city court.
The Hyderabad Police have said it could take a week for the former Pakistan skipper to get back his passport as he would have to complete legal formalities with regard to the closure of the case filed against him by his first wife Ayesha Siddiqui.
Ayesha withdrew her complaint against Shoaib after the latter divorced her. But the cricketer’s passport, seized by the police after grilling him April 5, is still with the court.
The Pakistani cricketer Thursday moved Andhra Pradesh High Court to get back his passport

Rafa Nadal Demolishes Berrer To Reach Last 8
MONTE CARLO: World number three Rafa Nadal continued his destruction business at the Monte Carlo Masters with a 6-0 6-1 demolition of German Michael Berrer to reach the quarter-finals on Thursday.
He will next face either fellow Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero or France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who were due to meet later on a sunsoaked centre court in a potentially explosive third-round match.
Nadal dropped only one game in his second-round match against Dutch qualifier Thiemo De Bakker and it long looked like world number 51 Berrer would taste an even heavier defeat.
Berrer, a finalist in the Zagreb tournament earlier this year, won only five points in the opening set as Grace Kelly look alikes gathered in the stands on Ladies’ day at the tournament.
By the fourth game of the second set, Berrer had doubled his tally, eventually bagging 18 points and triggering wild cheers when he clinched his only game.
A forehand winner down the line ended Berrer’s ordeal in a match lasting just 54 minutes and Spanish players enjoyed a fine day on their favourite surface.
David Ferrer ruthlessly brought Ivan Ljubicic down to earth with a 6-0 7-6 victory and his compatriots Albert Montanes and Fernando Verdasco also reached the quarter-finals.
Ljubicic, who won the Indian Wells Masters last month, could not handle Ferrer’s devastating forehand in a one-sided opening set before improving in the second as the Spaniard started to misfire.
Ferrer will face Germany’s Philipp Petzschner or Philipp Kohlschreiber for a place in the last four, with a possible match up against claycourt machine Nadal looming.
In front of a sparse audience and a few paragliders swirling around the skies with screeching seagulls, the 11th-seeded Ferrer was initially barely bothered by his opponent’s usually lethal first serve.
The eighth-seeded Ljubicic must have been giddy from all the chasing around he had to do as his opponent sent him charging round the court but he recovered in the second set.
He dropped serve in the third game but Ferrer allowed the Croatian to level at 5-5 with a forehand winner.
Ferrer, however, got his act together in the tiebreak, which he clinched 7-4 after Ljubicic netted a crosscourt forehand.
Montanes beat Croatian fourth seed Marin Cilic 6-4 6-4 while Verdasco, seeded sixth, recovered from a shaky start to see off Czech Tomas Berdych 5-7 6-3 6-2.

Ronaldo Lifts Real To Comeback Win At Almeria
Cristiano Ronaldo scored a trademark solo goal and Rafael van der Vaart struck a clinical winner to give Real Madrid a 2-1 comeback victory at mid-table Almeria and keep alive their La Liga title hopes.
Leaders Barcelona followed up Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Real with a 3-0 home win against Deportivo Coruna on Wednesday to go six points clear on 83 but Real’s success in Andalucia has trimmed the gap back to three with six games left.
President Florentino Perez spent a record 94 million euros to buy Ronaldo from Manchester United and the 25-year-old’s goal against Almeria was his 19th in the league this season, eight short of Barca’s La Liga top scorer Lionel Messi on 27.
“At the start we were a bit flat because of what happened on Saturday (against Barcelona) but then we got into the match very well and created a lot of chances,” Ronaldo told reporters. “We didn’t play a fantastic match but we managed to win and that’s the important thing.”

Most Innings in a Baseball Game
Most Innings in a Baseball Game, The longest baseball game ever played in the history of Major league baseball
came on May 8, 1984 between the Chicago White Sox and Milwaukee Brewers. The game went 7-6 in favor of Chicago after a total of 25 innings. The official game time was a staggering 8 hours and 6 minutes.
Back in 1920, a National League game between the Brooklyn Robins and Boston Braves lasted 26 innings and ended in a 1-1 tie. Talk about good pitching and defense. Or maybe it was poor hitting. There’s no official game time on that one, but it definitely might qualify as longest MLB game.
As for the other major sports, the longest basketball game ever played was between the Indianapolis Olympians and Rochester Royals. The January 6, 1951 game went six overtimes and approximately four hours with Indianapolis winning 75-73. In football, there’s been five NFL games that went into 2OT’s, all playoff games. The longest is said to be the Dolphins vs Chiefs on December 25, 1971 which had a total of 82:40 of overall playing time. Dolphins won that one 27-24. In hockey, back on March 23, 1936 the Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Maroons went 6 Overtimes and 116:30 of total time.
So now you know the lengthiest games of all time including the longest baseball game ever played. Although purists may debate whether it was the American League game on 1984, or the historic National League 26 inning game in 1920. One of those two is definitely the longest MLB game ever, but records were made to be broken!
