Saturday was a big day for Troy, as its single-season passing record-holder, one of its top defenders and a cornerback who didn’t even play in 2009 were selected in the NFL draft.
Trojans defensive end Cameron Sheffield went to the Kansas City Chiefs in the fifth round, cornerback Jorrick Calvin was taken by the Arizona Cardinals in the sixth, and quarterback Levi Brown went to the Buffalo Bills in the seventh.
“I’m just grateful to have the opportunity to go anywhere really, but especially Buffalo,” said Brown, whose 4,254 yards last season were the most in a single year at Troy and in the Sun Belt Conference. “I think it’s really a good opportunity for a quarterback because they don’t have an established starter. I’ve got a really good opportunity to come in and compete.”
Brown (6-3, 229), whose 6,284 career yards are the third-most in school history, joins a wide-open quarterback race in Buffalo with Trent Edwards, Brian Brohm and Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Sheffield (6-2, 257) recorded 66 tackles, including 10.5 for losses, and had seven sacks in 2009, then showed at the Senior Bowl in January that he could make the switch to outside linebacker, where he’ll be projected in the Chiefs’ 3-4 defense.
“It’s been a long wait all week,” he said. “I should finally be able to get some real sleep tonight.”
Calvin (5-10, 182) did not play in 2009 due to academic issues, but recorded 76 tackles, two interceptions and nine pass break-ups as a junior in 2008 and posted a 4.46 40-yard dash time at Troy’s pro day.

The first ethnic Chinese player to be drafted in the NFL, in its 91-year history, and at pick number 140 by the Buffalo Bills, Ed Wang is a 6?5? 314-lb. senior offensive tackle out of Virginia Tech. That means he’s 1-1/2 inches taller than Jeremy Lin, and a whole lot heavier. Wang is a big dude! A freak of nature.
Not to steal the thunder from Wang, but I think that just goes to show you how big Jeremy is, in “real-life” terms.
DraftExpress recently released its Portsmouth measurements, and I’ve heard people grumble about how Jeremy’s height and wingspan aren’t remarkable: 6?3? and 6?5?, respectively…
Incidentally, when I asked Jeremy’s older brother just how tall Jeremy is, he told me, “Six-three-and-a-half, six-four with shoes.”

Lance Baxter aka “D.C. Douglas” aka the GEICO announcer fired for calling Tea Partiers retarded and murderers
Don’t worry, the GEICO Gekko is still there. But the voice who ends the Geico commercials with “15 minutes can save you 15% or more on car insurance” is toast. The loser’s name is Lance Baxter. He also goes by “D.C. Douglas.” Baxter was so arrogant or just plain stupid enough to use his highly recognizable voice and leave a voicemail with Freedom Works asking how many of its members were “mentally retarded” and what the response would be when a member inevitably killed someone. It would be so easy for this progressive liberal to not have done this, even a caveman could have not done it! Expect Lance Baxter, aka D.C. Douglas to get a voice over gig with either the Center of American Progress or MSNBC soon.

Roethlisberger Trade Rumors Swirling
With their starting quarterback out for the beginning of the season, rumors are swirling about whether or not the Steelers might actually trade Ben Roethlisberger
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced today that the league suspended Roethlisberger for six games for violating the personal conduct code.
Now that the Steelers know the details of the suspension, the team can begin their preparations for the NFL draft – which could potentially include a possible trade.
Over the last few days, there has been no shortage of speculation sweeping through the NFL about Roethlisberger’s future with the team.
During a conference call this afternoon, Steelers President Art Rooney was asked to address the issue.
When asked to confirm reports that the team was “actively shopping Ben to some teams in the top 10 in the draft” and comment on the possibility that the Steelers might trade him, Steelers President Art Rooney responded:
“As we’ve said before, we really can’t answer questions about trades – particularly this time of year. We go into every draft with the idea that we’re going to do anything we can to make our team a better football team and so we just have to stick with that and really not discuss trades in advance.”
Since Rooney didn’t outright deny the reports – speculation as to a possible trade spread like wildfire.
Late today, both the St. Louis Rams and the Buffalo Bills have publicly said that they are not interested in acquiring Roethlisberger.

dyngus day

The West Side Democratic and Civil Club in South Bend is all set to celebrate the 80th Dyngus Day today. The day will start with the old traditions where every politician will have plenty of works to do. Dyngus Day is celebrated on the day after Easter and normally it is called as politicians’ day where politicians meet with the candidates and they arrange conferences and parties. Whether the politicians get benefit out of these parties or not but the people certainly get as they are served the meals like kielbasa and sauerkraut and plenty of beer.

Today at Dyngus Day, many Democratic politicians will address to the public and afterwards meet them. Like previous years, the doors of the halls will be opened at 9am but the main program is not going to start any time before noon. Pete Buttigieg said that it was a tradition for anyone running for the office to try to make them useful around there. According to Pete Buttigieg, the main thing of this day is you meet with older friends and make new friends. A lot of curious people come every year to make relations with the politicians and to share their ideas with them.
Republicans, too, are not far behind and they will also have chances to meet the public at the West Side Democratic Club prior they not post posters and address the crowd on the main gate. The Republicans celebrations will be started at the St. Joseph County Republican Party headquarters from 5-8 p.m. Monday.
According to the President of Democratic Club, the Dyngus Day is all about meeting the politicians because you don’t get enough chances to meet wit these people who govern your country. You see them on TV but you can’t ask questions that what they are doing with your country.

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Last season, the Phillies’ bullpen was the one element that delayed the team’s division-clinching celebration and complicated manager Charlie Manuel’s handling of the postseason. Though the roster remains strong and likely better than any other in the National League, the ‘pen remains the team’s primary area of concern.
“The Phillies should be able to run the table in their division, and maybe the National League,” said one NL scout. “But if they have anything to worry about, it’s the bullpen. That is where the most question marks are.”
The success or failure of the relief corps will depend largely on Brad Lidge, much as it did last year. After a perfect 2008, the closer endured a horrific 2009 campaign, blowing 11 save opportunities while going 0-8 with an astronomical 7.21 ERA. When a closer struggles, blown saves are not the only issue; the other relievers have to deal with the uncertainty of their roles.
In an ideal scenario this year, Lidge will handle the ninth and Ryan Madson will be the Phils’ primary eighth-inning setup man. Right now, Madson – who blew six saves himself last year while going 5-5 with a 3.26 ERA – will be the closer and free-agent addition Danys Baez will begin in the setup role.
Righthanders Chad Durbin and Jose Contreras will pitch in the middle-to-late innings, and lefty J.C. Romero will be either in the setup role or handle lefthanded batters once he fully recovers from elbow surgery. Lefty Antonio Bastardo will handle that role in the interim. And Rule 5 draftee David Herndon and his sinkerball has made the team. For now.
But everything depends on Lidge, whose problems last year stemmed in large part from pain in his right knee. That forced him to alter his mechanics, which hurt his ability to locate pitches and led to elbow problems. During the off-season, Lidge underwent knee and elbow procedures, and initially claimed to be in much better health this spring. But he was behind schedule from the beginning of spring training and suffered a minor setback Wednesday when he received a cortisone shot for inflammation and soreness in his right elbow.
The soreness is not related to Lidge’s surgery on his elbow, Phillies team physician Michael Ciccotti said. Lidge had surgery on the inner part of his right elbow for tendinitis. The soreness is on the outer part of the elbow and is something Lidge normally has in spring training.
But it has lingered longer than normal this spring. And that can partially explain why Lidge’s velocity remains only in the high 80s.
“We got to a point where it [the velocity on his fastball] was stagnant for a couple weeks and wasn’t going up like it normally should go up in spring training,” Lidge said Wednesday. “My arm strength is good. My slider was coming around. Everything else was going the way it was, but velocity was just not going. Rather than projecting on when it will, we just decided to take action into our own hands. Get a cortisone shot and, hopefully, that will speed the process up a lot.”
Ciccotti said Lidge’s return could be pushed back to the third week of April. “Because he started a little bit later this year with his throwing because of those two surgeries, that soreness has lingered a little bit longer,” Ciccotti said. “Normally it resolves by the second or third week in March.”
Lidge and Romero were placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, retroactive to March 26.
Romero’s health and effectiveness create more questions that will not be answered immediately. One of the best relievers on the 2008 World Series-winning team, Romero was a non-factor last year. The season began with a suspension for using performance-enhancing drugs, and ended with elbow surgery.
Romero is optimistic about his health and hopes to return by mid-April. The Phils hope he is correct because Romero is far more important to this year’s roster than he was to the 2009 version.
“J.C. is doing very well,” Ciccotti said. “He’s progressing along with the reconditioning type of achiness that all the throwers have as they come back from a surgical procedure. He’s doing very well.”
Last season, the Phils had Scott Eyre, an aging but highly effective lefty specialist. When Romero missed most of the season, the Phils had Eyre, at least until he suffered a September elbow injury that diminished the team’s motivation to talk him out of retirement.
Eyre did retire, leaving Romero as the lone experienced lefty reliever. Lefthander Antonio Bastardo has potential and will fill in at least until Romero’s return, but he showed his inexperience during a decent spring training.
The organization is not overly excited at present about Sergio Escalona, who was sent to the minors last month to improve his repertoire and focus. And Mike Zagurski, who is not full recovered from elbow surgery, was sent down, too.
The lack of lefty depth could be an issue for the Phils, though it will be less problematic if Romero rebounds this year. The team is also gambling on Baez and particularly Contreras, and hoping that at least one of them will duplicate the effectiveness of the departed Chan Ho Park.
Park was arguably the Phils’ most valuable reliever last year, a starter past his prime who was able to maximize his stuff is short bursts, and contribute multiple innings.
Contreras has struggled mightily but Dubee said he’s “not ready to jump off any bridges about it yet.”
Manager Charlie Manuel has faith in Contreras. “Once he gets his command down and once he starts getting his split and his breaking ball over the plate, his stuff is big,” Manuel said. “It’s just a matter of getting him there.”
Baez could succeed with the same approach – or they could succumb to the age and injury issues that have interrupted recent seasons for them. While Contreras has struggled, Baez has been effective.
The net effect is that Herndon will make the team.
The Phils have decent organizational bullpen depth, with Scott Mathieson and lefties Zagurski and Escalona among the potential contributors if others falter.
The Phils likely will toy with numerous configurations and react to injuries and ineffectiveness while tinkering through the season.
“I think we’re still taking the same chance that we’ve got,” Manuel said. “If there’s somebody out there that definitely can help us, believe me, I’ll definitely suggest that and try to push for it. But at the same time, usually, this time of year, if you pick somebody up, it’s a gamble.”

Rumors are swirling that after the acquisition of Donovan McNabb by the Washington Redskins that as many as 5 teams are interested in now back-up quarterback and restricted free agent Jason Campbell. Those 5 teams appear to be the Buffalo Bills, Oakland Raiders, Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and an unnamed team. While it shouldn’t be too much of a shock there is this much interest in Jason Campbell, it is interesting as to how many quarterbacks the Jaguars have been linked to this offseason. Is it a bit of foreshadowing?
Star-divide
Today I had originally planned to write about how the trades recently made by the Philadelphia Eagles and the Cleveland Browns helped Jacksonville’s chances of either landing Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen or trading down, this certainly changes things. It’s likely nothing happens with Jason Campbell until draft day, as a couple of the teams interested have a shot at draft a quarterback early. There is a nice situation that could occur for the Jaguars however, if their interest is serious.
The first question you have to ask when looking at their interest in Jason Campbell is; Is he better than David Garrard?
I don’t think you can give anything more than a “maybe”. Sure, if you were to just ask people and not show them the numbers, most would say absolutely lot. I like to look into the numbers, though. We’ll compare the last two seasons of Jason Campbell and David Garrard and see just how far apart they are. I understand that in 2007 Garrard would dwarf Campbell, but 2007 was essentially Campbell’s first full-time season starting.
