The BP oil spill has already done tremendous economic damage to the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. The spill has left thousands of fisherman without work and caused a significant down trend for the tourism industry along the Gulf Coast. While the suffering of those populations is significant by itself, the oil spill’s impact on Florida could ultimately have to most political and economic impact.
Florida plays a key role in the Untied States economy. In 2005, Florida had a GDP of $670 billion, making it the fourth largest economy in the United States. In comparison, Louisiana had a GDP of just $169 billion in 2005. Much of Florida’s economy is dependent on tourism, but if oil cover Floridian beaches it could endanger an economy that has already suffered from the recent depression.
Politically Florida holds even more significance. Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama are all Republican strongholds. Together they account for 24 electoral votes. Oil spill or not, President Obama was likely going to lose all three states in 2012. In addition, Democrats had little chance of gaining any congressional seats in these states. On the the hand Florida, with its 27 electoral votes, is very important for any presidential hopeful. 
Florida has played a key role in both the 2000 and 2004 elections. President Obama lost the state in 2008, but not be able to afford losing the state again in 2012. Democrats are also competing for a key Senate seat in Florida in the upcoming 2010 midterms. Whichever party gets blamed for the oil spill disaster is likely to suffer politically in Florida for a very long time.
Meanwhile, BP’s latest effort to stop the massive oil leak suffered a setback Wednesday when the diamond-edge saw being used to cut off the broken pipe got stuck. It took hours to free it, and the company is now using shears to cut the pipe.
Officials say this will mean the cut will not be as clean as had been hoped, and it will require installation of a looser-fitting containment device, known as a top hat.
Florida’s fishing industries and communities weather adverse impacts of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Specifically, the governor has requested that the U.S. Commerce Department take action under federal law to provide aid to commercial fishermen, charter boat operators and coastal fishing communities.
“The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has been consulting with our fishing industry stakeholders very closely over the past several weeks,” said FWC Chairman Rodney Barreto. “They are telling us they are struggling to stay afloat even though fishing is still open in Florida and seafood is still being harvested.”
The oil spill has already entered the loop current that will take it past the shores of Florida, including the Tampa Bay area.
USA Today reports that “the danger posed by the Gulf oil spill to the U.S. food supply is worse than previously thought, and could make testing of seafood necessary for decades to come, officials and scientists say.”
Acting director for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service Rowan Gould added another disturbing problem to the deadly oil mix. He said, the spill “will affect the Gulf, and possibly the entire North American region, for maybe years, if not decades.

21 Annual Billboard Latin Music Conference and Awards took place yesterday at Conrad Condado Plaza Hotel. 2010 Billboard Bash featured performances from some of this year’s finalists, including Larry Hernandez, Flex, Diana Reyes and Carolina La O.
According billboard.biz was Universal Music Latin Entertainment (UMLE) and its wholly owned labels, Universal Music Latino, Machete, and Disa, who were the big winners. The awards honor writers, publishers, producers or labels of the year in Latin music.
UMLE managed to take home the Top Latin Albums Label of the Year Award, while the pop imprint of Universal Music Latino took home the award for Hot Latin Songs Label of the Year. UMLE’s Mexican publishers Disa won the Regional Mexican Airplay Label of the Year.
The only categories that were torn away from UMLE last night was the tropical music category. It was bought by Sony Music Latin, which not only won the Tropical Airplay Label of the Year Award, but also Tropical Album Label of The Year Award.

Joe Webb is still waiting to hear his name called in the NFL draft
The wait continues for former UAB standout Joe Webb.
Webb was thought to fit somewhere in between the third round and fifth round in the NFL draft. Well, the fifth round just ended and Webb has yet to be selected.
The Pittsburgh Steelers were one of the teams that showed the most pre-draft attention to Webb. The Steelers had a fourth-round pick, three fifth-round picks and another fifth round pick they traded to the Arizona Cardinals. The Steelers used none of those picks on Webb.
If he does get picked, Webb won’t be the first quarterback turned receiver to go in this year’s draft. That honor went to Appalachian State’s Armanti Edwards, who was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the third round (89th overall pick) on Saturday

New York Jets trade RB Leon Washington to Seattle for fifth-round pick
The New York Jets added another flashy and versatile option for Mark Sanchez and their suddenly high-powered offense, and then dealt the popular Leon Washington.
The Jets selected Southern California running back Joe McKnight, Sanchez’s former college teammate, after moving up and acquiring Carolina’s fourth-round pick Saturday. New York traded its fourth-rounder (No. 124) and sixth-rounder (No. 198) to the Panthers to move up to No. 112.
Shortly after drafting McKnight, the Jets traded Washington to Seattle, along with a seventh-rounder, for the Seahawks’ fifth-rounder. New York selected Kentucky fullback John Conner with the pick.
McKnight is regarded as an excellent multipurpose player who can be a change-of-pace back and punt returner. Rex Ryan also has Shonn Greene, LaDainian Tomlinson and Chauncey Washington, another former Trojan, on the roster.
“Whatever Coach Ryan wants me to play, I’ll play whatever,” McKnight said by phone from his home in River Ridge, La. “Whatever role he has for me in the package or whatever he wants me to do on the field, I’m going to do whatever.”
Add in recently acquired wide receiver Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards, Jerricho Cotchery and Brad Smith, and Sanchez should have plenty of targets in his second season.
New York drafted Boise State cornerback Kyle Wilson in the first round, 29th overall, and Massachusetts offensive lineman Vladimir Ducasse in the second round.
The 5-foot-11, 198-pound McKnight, who made himself eligible for the draft after his junior season, is an elusive player who shows some good power for his size, along with good vision and patience. He was often compared to former USC star Reggie Bush because of his versatility.
“I’ve got some toughness to my game and I think I showed people this past year that I can work between the tackles somewhat,” McKnight said. “I did a decent job with that.”
Washington signed his tender contract offer last week and is recovering from a broken right leg, but became expendable when the Jets drafted McKnight. The former Pro Bowl kick returner suffered a compound fracture of the tibia and fibula at Oakland on Oct. 25, and missed the rest of the season.
The Jets have done well in the fourth round lately. Washington (2006), Cotchery (2004), Dwight Lowery (2008) and Kerry Rhodes (2005) are all recent fourth-rounders who have been significant contributors for New York.
McKnight doesn’t come without concerns. He had a few injuries at USC that limited his production at times, and he sat out the Trojans’ Emerald Bowl victory against Boston College while the school investigated whether he violated NCAA rules.

The Carolina Panthers have selected Louisiana State WR Brandon LaFell with the No. 78 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.
Fantasy analysis: Carolina desperately needed a receiver, and LaFell would have probably been a first-round pick had he come out last season. He has size (6-foot-3, 211 pounds), and should battle for a role in the starting lineup.
If there is a rookie wideout to put a little sleep stock into, it may be LaFell. He could be a red zone threat. He’s a sixth fantasy receiver for now, though, but he could work his way up the boards if the quarterback situation is settled early in the offseason.

The lucky winner of the $258 million Missouri Powerball Lottery jackpot is 29-year-old gas station clerk Chris Shaw.
Shaw bought the lottery ticket at the Marshall, Missouri gas station where he works. He is the biggest lottery winner in the state’s history.
Shaw is not sure what he’ll do with the money but he’ll definitely take his family to Disneyland!
The Missouri Lottery is run by the government of Missouri. It is a charter member of the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), whose first drawing was held in 1988.

McAfee Apologizes for Update Fiasco
McAfee on Thursday issued an apology for the faulty update that shut down users’ computers and prompted a continuous reboot cycle.
“McAfee team members have been working around the clock to fix the problem and work with impacted customers,” Barry McPherson, executive vice president of worldwide technical support and customer service for McAfee, wrote in a blog post. “We estimate that the majority of the affected systems are back up and running at this time and more systems are coming back online quickly.”
The faulty signature update DAT file, which went out on Wednesday, affected the svchost.exe file on “a subset of systems” using McAfee VirusScan Enterprise on Windows XP service pack 3. Users with VirusScan Enterprise 8.7 were hit a bit harder than those running version 8.5, McAfee said, “because of the different implementation of memory scanning within the products.”
Other versions of XP, Vista, and Windows 7 were not affected, the company said.
The problem resulted in blue screens, loss of network connectivity, inability to use USB, and continuous reboots, McAfee said.
What happened? McPherson said that McAfee recently changed its QA environment, which allowed a faulty DAT to get through the testing process.
“To prevent this from happening again, we are implementing additional QA protocols for any releases that directly impact critical system files,” McPherson wrote. “In addition, we plan to add capabilities to our cloud-based Artemis system that will provide an additional level of protection against false positives by leveraging an expansive whitelist of critical system files.”
To fix the problem, McAfee issued a remediation tool that “suppresses the driver causing the false positive by applying an Extra.dat file in folder,” he wrote “It then restores the ’svchost.exe’ Windows file, the file quarantined as a result of the false detection.”
This tool has “been successful at remediating the problem,” McPherson wrote. More details for restoring a system are available in the McAfee KnowledgeBase in KB68780.
