Lahore: Seeds of Peace successfully carries out first mock parliament
Seeds of Peace (a non-profit, non-religious and non-political organization dedicated to preparing teenagers from areas of conflict with the leadership skills required to promote coexistence and peace), successfully carried out its first Mock Parliament event. The purpose of the Mock Parliament was to replicate the structure and working of our neighboring country. Pakistani Seeds thus organized this event on the 22nd-24th of October 2010 at FCC, Lahore . A group of 28 students from 10 different schools took part as MPs of the Indian Lok Sabha. The proceedings of Day 1 were to enact the election process of the Parliament. After electing the new speaker, PM and their speeches, MPs from various parliamentary parties including but not limited to INC, BJP, Shiv Sena addressed the House. Day 2 and 3 witnessed enthusiastic students having an intense general debate between the government and the opposition, highlighting the major issues faced by India: Territorial issues, economic problems, Kashmir, Naxalsim, and Maoist Movements. This parliament allowed students to learn negotiation skills and how to reach workable and practical compromises. All in all, this event was able to achieve its aim, which was the recognition of Indian issues along with the learning of parliamentary protocols. Prof. Alivna Waseem (Coordinator FCC Debating Society) gave away the certificates among the participants. Some educators and students from India also witnessed the event. Sajjad Ahmad, President Seeds of Peace, Lahore thanked the participants and their parents for their positive contribution and hoped that such activities will continue.

India test nuclear-capable missile, BHUBANESWAR: India carried out its first nighttime test of a medium-range missile on Monday, a defense ministry official said.
The surface-to-surface ‘Agni-II’ (Fire) missile — with a range of up to 2,000 kilometers — can carry both conventional and nuclear warheads weighing up to 1,000 kilograms, the official said on condition of anonymity in line with ministry rules.
The missile was fired from Wheelers Island in the eastern state of Orissa, the official said. India’s previous missile tests have been done during the day.
Monday’s test is unlikely to aggravate tensions between India and Pakistan as they routinely test-fire missiles. Both usually notify each other ahead of the launches, however, it was not immediately known whether New Delhi informed Islamabad about Monday’s test.

North Korea can’t be accepted as nuclear power: Hillary Clinton

The United States will never have normal, sanctions-free ties with a nuclear-armed North Korea, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, rebuffing Pyongyang’s hopes to be accepted as a nuclear state.
While repeating the U.S. readiness for bilateral talks with North Korea, Clinton said in a speech the United States would not relax its sanctions on Pyongyang until it takes verifiable, irreversible steps toward complete denuclearization. “Current sanctions will not be relaxed until Pyongyang takes verifiable, irreversible steps toward complete denuclearization,” Clinton said in a speech hosted by the United States Institute for Peace think tank. “Its leaders should be under no illusion that the United States will ever have normal, sanctions-free relations with a nuclear-armed North Korea,” she added. “We are prepared to meet bilaterally with North Korea. But North Korea’s return to the negotiating table is not enough.” The United States hopes a bilateral dialogue may bring North Korea, which carried out its second nuclear test in May, back to wider talks on abandoning its nuclear programs. Clinton also said Iran must take quick action to carry out a plan under which it would send most of its low-enriched uranium (LEU) reserve to Russia and France for conversion into fuel for a nuclear medicine facility in Tehran. “The door is open for a better future with Iran. But the process of engagement cannot be open ended. We are not prepared to talk just for the sake of talking,” she said.
