Obama says sticking to pull out of Iraq

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama left no doubt on Saturday in his weekly radio address that the US is sticking to its promise to pull out of Iraq despite the upsurge in violence.

The US President, addressing the nation from the Massachusetts island retreat of Martha’s Vineyard, where he was on vacation, confirmed that the US combat mission in Iraq would end on Tuesday, and reaffirmed his campaign promise to end the war in Iraq and refocus on Afghanistan as home to the top threats against America.

“As a candidate for this office, I pledged I would end this war”, he said. “As president, that’s what I’m doing. I’ve bought home more than ninety-thousand troops since I took office. We have closed, or turned over to Iraq, hundreds of bases. In many parts of the country Iraqis have already taken the lead for security.”

He emphasised that US troops would continue

Indonesia’s Hidayat reaches final at badminton worlds

PARIS: Indonesian ace Taufik Hidayat fought his way into the men’s singles final at the Badminton World Championships for the first time in five years, beating South Korea’s Park Sung Hwan in straight sets on Saturday.

The former world and Olympic champion took the opening set comfortably 21-10, but seemed under control in the second set.

Trailing 18-20, the seasoned fifth seed managed to come back and win four points in a row, reaching the final for the first time since his title winning moment in 2005.

“I was determined to win the match in two sets,” said the fifth seed Hidayat. “When I fought back to tie in 20-20, I knew I could win the second set.”

Chen Jin watched Hidayat’s match on the stands as the fourth seed from China reached the final first by beating world No. 2 Peter Gade from Denmark.
