Karachi: 20 arrested in Rangers search operation
After a firefight between two gangs in Orangi Town that left three people dead, a limited scale search operation was conducted in the area.
Heavy contingents of Rangers cordoned off Sector C-1 of Orangio Town and conducted a door-to-door search operation.
The Rangers authorities said that the purpose of the operation was to recover illegal weapons that were being used in gang wars.
The Ranger abandoned the operation after arresting 20 suspects.
The locals protested against the operation and chanted slogans as well.
The violent mob attacked a police mobile van and not only damaged the van but also tortured four policemen.
Meanwhile, East district police arrested a political party activist, Hikmat Khan.

KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly on Thursday unanimously adopted two resolutions, condemning the recent Transparency International’s report on corruption and private schools’ fees increase.
Sharjil Inam Memon of the PPP tabled the first resolution against the Transparency International.
It was endorsed by all political parties, including MQM, PML-F and Muslim League-Q.
After passing the approval, female lawmakers chanted slogans against the TI and thumped their desks.
They alleged that some non-government organizations (NGOs) are working against the national security.

LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) has been turned into a battle ground for the ongoing scuffle between lawyers and police before the start of a rally by lawyers to express their anger towards the judges. Lawyers became angry with judges on Thursday, especially with Chief Justice of Lahore Khawaja Sharif over the transfer dispute of a judge, Justice Zawar.
Lawyers broke mirrors at the honorable court of the Chief Justice Lahore and started to create agitations around LHC. They chanted slogans against judges and tried to pressurize CJ Lahore Khawaja Sharif.
Later, the Chief Justice called a meeting of all LHC judges and announced to go on strike to protest against the humiliating misconduct of lawyers.

LOS ANGELES: Investigators found no evidence of a bomb aboard a Thai Airways THAI.BK flight on Tuesday after a written threat was discovered in a lavatory shortly before its arrival in Los Angeles, officials said.
After landing safely, the plane taxied to a remote area of the Los Angeles International Airport where officials interviewed passengers and crew members, screened luggage and searched the plane.
“No evidence has been found to suggest a credible threat to the aircraft,” FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said. The FBI is now investigating to determine who was responsible for making the threat among the nearly 200 passengers and crew members on the Bangkok-Los Angeles flight, she said.
Eimiller could not confirm reports that the threat was scrawled on a lavatory mirror.

Asian stocks tumble as dollar hits new 15-year low

HONG KONG: Asian stocks tumbled on Wednesday after Wall Street was spooked by fresh concerns over European banks while Japan’s exporters fell as the dollar slipped to another 15-year low against the yen.
Tokyo plunged 2.18%, or 201.40, to 9,024.60 as the yen hit 83.33 to the dollar.
Sydney shed 0.79%, or 36 points, to close at 4,537.2 and Shanghai slipped 0.64%. Hong Kong fell 1.43% by the break.
Stocks took their cue from a 1.03% fall on the Dow in New York, where investors returned from the Labor Day holiday to reports that Europe’s banks may not be as strong as first thought.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday that stress tests in July to measure the strength of Europe’s banks showed they held more potentially risky government debt than believed.

Flood victims stage protest in Karachi relief camp

KARACHI: Flood victims staged a protest at a relief camp in SITE, Karachi, against the non-availability of edibles and other necessities, said sources Wednesday.
Flood affectees from this relief camp came onto the streets and staged a protest against the inadequate supply of food and drinking water.
Children and women were also among the protesters.
“We have not been provided with food for three days,” said affectees.
Protesters chanted slogans against the government and demanded the supply of food and other basic necessities on an immediate basis.

Geo blocked: Demos at KPC, cable operators offices
KARACHI: Journalists and staff members of Geo TV staged peaceful demonstration in front of Karachi Press Club (KPC) to register protest against the blocking of Geo News and other private channels.
The participants of the demonstrations demanded immediate reopening of the blocked TV channels including Geo News.
The protest rally then headed towards Sindh Chief Minister House where journalists chanted slogans for the freedom of press and media.
Later, the protestors gathered in front of the offices of WorldCall cable operators to mark their protest and to seek an explanation as to what led the administrators of cable offices to block Geo News and other private TV channels.
It is pertinent to note here that WorldCall has heavy stakes of an Oman company as well as government dignitaries including Governor Punjab Salman Taseer.
JI terms PA resolution drone attack on media
LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General, Liaquat Baloch, has termed the Punjab Assembly resolution a drone attack on freedom of media.
Ina a statement issued by the party, Baloch flayed the leadership of PML-N and PPP for showing sympathy with the journalists after supporting the move in the assembly.
He praised the media for its role during the dictatorial regime to free the judiciary and asked the government of Punjab to apologize.
Journalists stage country-wide demos against PA resolution
ISLAMABAD: Journalists staged demonstrations across the country on Saturday in protest against passage of resolution against media in Punjab Assembly.
A protest demonstration was held on the call of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) outside National Press Club in Islamabad. Office bearers of Rawalpindi and Islamabad unions of journalists besides those of press club and its members participated in the protest.
The participants chanted slogans against the Punjab government, demanding withdrawal of the resolution against media.
Karachi Union of Journalists also took out a rally and staged a sit-in before Sindh Assembly building.
In Hyderabad, journalists with black ribbons strapped to their arms led a rally from Press Club to Radio Pakistan. They also called for scrapping of the resolution passed against media in Punjab Assembly.
At a protest demonstration in Sukkur, some journalists representing Press Club, metaphorically, locked their mouths with padlocks while others voiced piercing slogans against Punjab Assembly members.
Black day was also observed by journalists in other parts of the country where protest rallies, demonstrations and sit-ins were staged by journalists and representatives of civil society against attempts to put unconstitutional curbs on media.
Similar protests and rallies were held in Nawabshah, Badin, Multan, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Jehlum, Chaman, Nasirabad and Bannu besides Muzaffarabad, Neelum valley and Mirpur, Azad Kashmir.
