orangebloodsThe Texas Longhorns won a national championship in the Rose Bowl in January, 2006. If reports from www.orangebloods.com are correct, the Horns will be playing conference games in the venerable edifice beginning in 2012 as a full-fledged member of the Pac 10.

Chip Brown of the aforementioned website broke the story last week the Pac-10 would be inviting six teams from the Big XII to join their ranks. Today’s news (Chicago Tribune, Omaha World-Herald, www.orangebloods.com) that Nebraska would make official their intentions of joining the Big 10 by Friday set the wheels in motion for what could be a colossal shift in collegiate athletics.

Nebraska’s Board of Regents have conference re-alignment discussion listed on their official agenda for Friday’s meeting, according to the Associated Press. Once the Cornhuskers make the move, look for the Big 10 to make additional moves. It is believed the Big 10 covets Notre Dame but there has been no reported positive discussions between the conference and Fighting Irish athletic department officials. Missouri, believed to be the other Big XII school on the Big 10’s radar has received the “cold shoulder” from the Big 10 this week in a report on www.fanhouse.com. Maryland and Rutgers could enter the mix for Big 10 expansion as well.

But back to the Big XII, or what will soon be left of it. Brown wrote Wednesday afternoon that Texas Athletic Director, DeLoss Dodds gathered the Longhorns coaches to inform them, despite Longhorn officials best efforts to save the Big XII-the conference home for UT since 1994-the league was, “dead”. Their lone-star brother/rival Texas A&M is expected to join the Horns, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Colorado as early as Friday as institutions that have accepted invitations to join the Pac 10.

How to tell between Spanish and English bluebells
Bluebell spanglish
The Spaniard embodiment of the word ‘hotness’, Paz Vega (Spanglish, The Spirit) , according to Variety, is in talks to join the cast of THE JESUIT, an ensemble drama directed by Paul Schrader. If the deal’s locked in she’ll be joining Willem Dafoe, Oscar Isaac, and Michelle Rodriguez who are all also in final talks.
Spanish bluebells are stouter, taller, with wider leaves and more upright stems, and have paler blue flowers, that have, unlike English bluebells, no scent.

The finer, slightly darker stems of true English bluebells carry flowers on one side only and curve as they age.8a8ad8b09f14487c spanglish

For some time there has been a strong campaign to get rid of more robust Spanish bluebells because there is apparently evidence that they are slowly starting to knock out our native plants and that hybrids are gradually invading our woodlands. In truth, most garden bluebells are hybrids anyway

If you live in the country, especially in a bluebell woods area, it would be worth trying to clear out any obvious “aliens”, and certainly deadhead them to slow their spread and don’t plant any new ones. However, getting rid of bluebells is not easy.

Digging them out is well nigh impossible and you will leave behind bits of bulbs that will come back year after year, as well as stir up dormant seed in the soil. Some gardeners go to great lengths – crushing leaves and repeatedly using a glyphosate weed killer on them.

Yours is an urban garden and your bluebells are very likely to be hybrids – only “Spanglish”. You can spend a lot of time and energy trying to get rid of them, doing your bit for conservation – but what will you really achieve?
Prescription Drug Instructions Often Lost In Translation
Chicago Tribune: “Pharmacies that print prescription labels translated into Spanish often issue inaccurate or confusing instructions that could be potentially hazardous to a patient’s health, according to a report in the May issue of Pediatrics journal.” Such mistakes can lead to confusion among patients like 8-year-old Linda Jimenez, whose mother typically takes her to a Spanish speaking …
