Actress Delpy, Chris talk ‘2 Days in New York’

PARK CITY: Back in 2007, actress Julie Delpy brought to theaters a comical love story, “2 Days in Paris,” that she also wrote and directed, starring Adam Goldberg as her on screen boyfriend in a romance set in the City of Light.

The movie earned positive reviews, and roughly five years later, she has returned with “2 Days in New York,” only this time her character Marion has replaced Goldberg with a new beau, played by comedian Chris Rock. The two are living together in the Big Apple when her family, including a father who hardly showers and an oversexed sister, come to visit.

The amusing farce premiered on Wednesday at the Sundance Film Festival to a warm reception. And Delpy, who directed, co-wrote and stars in the film, sat down with Rock to talk about it, writing the role specifically for Rock and how it was better that he really didn’t understand French when they were filming.

Q. Chris, why did you want to work with Julie? You can do any films you like?
Rock: “Really? Tom Cruise can do whatever he likes.”

Delpy: “Not anymore.”

Rock: “Maybe Shia LaBeouf can? I just liked the script and that is all I need. I don’t get into, you know how people are like, ‘I see myself as a brand and does this help my brand’ and all that nonsense. If I am in a good movie, it will be good for me. I thought the story was really good. I thought the script was great and I trusted Julie and that was enough for me. I don’t think I asked her another question. I had seen her other films. I loved her other films. You know, character stuff, not ‘movie’ stuff.,”

Q. Julie how did you end up casting Chris?
Delpy: “When I decided to make a sequel to the film I wanted him to be my new boyfriend. And I called his agent, who I happened to know, because I have been fired from every agency in town. Actually ICM fired me when I was writing “Sunset” (“Before Sunset”), because they thought I was crazy to write a sequel. They thought I was wasting my time and I was crazy. They said, ‘why are your wasting your time?’ But, it’s OK I am not even mad with the guy that fired me, I am actually friends with him. Anyway, so I called his agent, who wasn’t the guy that fired me, I knew him way before that, and basically and I said, ‘I want to write a film for Chris and me, the sequel to ’2 days in Paris.”… an hour later he called me back and said, ‘Go For It.’”

Q. Chris, how was it working with Julie’s real-life father? (French actor Albert Delpy) Any strange odors, as joked about in the film.
Rock: “No no he smelled like baby powder, he was great.”

Delpy: “He didn’t know what was going on between me and my father. It played favorably to have Chris not really understanding what was going on in French. It was better to keep it like that. If the film sometimes seems mayhem, like the dinner scene, it is really built that way.”

“I have always been fascinated by language and being a foreigner in America and having traveled many places. I think with human beings, there is a lot of misunderstanding already, especially in relationships but it gets even more when there is language issues.”

Q. Julie, you have worked with your father before, how are you similar and different?
Delpy: “My dad is more crazy than me, I am much more square than he is and more organized and much less crazy than he is.”

Q. You often get compared in style to Woody Allen and you say you admire him with other directors. What do you still learn from Allen today?
Delpy: “I want to have his career. If I have his career I will be very very happy and very very lucky.”

“I also love Robert Altman, I love how he created interaction between characters and this feeling that everything is totally natural and normal.”

Rock: “I was going to be in his last movie, and then he died. I don’t know why he did that to me.”

Q. Julie the comedy was sort of old school farce, playing on cultural differences, but also felt modern. Were you aiming for that tone or style?
Delpy: “I don’t really think about what I am going for in terms of the comedy, I am only thinking about what makes me laugh and what pleases me when I am writing … I like when the cameras moves a lot and it is very lively because I like this feel of urgency and mayhem.”

Q. Are you more out of place in France or America?
Delpy: “I am still treated as a French person, but sometimes people are resentful that I love it in the US,. It’s a French thing you know, but most of the time I am included in being this French person that has moved. … It is unclear to them what I am doing and what I am aiming for. They are a bit surprised and they kind of hate that because they love to put people in boxes. But I think that is here, too.” AGENCIES

America has Iran attack plan

WASHINGTON: The top US military officer says he has a plan to attack Iran if needed to prevent it from getting nuclear weapons, but is “extremely concerned” about the possible repercussions of such a strike.

Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said military action against Iran could have “unintended consequences that are difficult to predict in what is an incredibly unstable part of the world.”

But, speaking on Sunday’s “Meet the Press” programme on NBC, Mullen said allowing Iran to develop a nuclear weapon was also unacceptable. “Quite frankly, I am extremely concerned about both of those outcomes,” he said.

Mullen held out hope that a combination of international diplomatic efforts and sanctions against Iran would lead Tehran to suspend a nuclear enrichment program that many believe is a clandestine bid to develop nuclear arms.

“I am hopeful (it) works,” he said. At the same time, though, he said “the military options have been on the table, and remain on the table”.

“I hope we don’t get to that, but it’s an important option and it’s one that’s well understood,” he added. Asked if the military has a plan to strike Iran, Mullen replied, “We do”.

He did not elaborate. Iran insists its uranium enrichment programme is for peaceful purposes only. Meanwhile, Iran will make the strategic Gulf region unsafe for all if it comes under attack by the United States over it nuclear programme, the deputy head of the elite Revolutionary Guards said on Sunday.

“If the Americans make the slightest mistake, the security of the region will be endangered. Security in the Persian Gulf should be for all or none,” Yadollah Javani said.

“The Persian Gulf is a strategic region and if it is endangered they (Americans) will suffer losses and our response will be firm.

“We will defend ourselves if America or Israel resort to any hostile measures against our vital values,” he added.

The international community led by the United States has stepped up pressure on Iran over its controversial nuclear programme amid concerns that the Islamic republic is engaged in a covert nuclear weapons programme, a charge Tehran vehemently denies.

The United States and Israel have not ruled out a military strike to stop Iran’s alleged atomic ambitions. Javani’s declaration preceded comments by the top US military officer on Sunday that a plan to attack Iran was ready, if needed to stop the Islamic republic from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said he was “extremely concerned” about the possible repercussions of such a strike. Iranian officials have frequently vowed a crushing response to any US and Israeli attacks.

Hustler’s rep further said that the tape was shot in September 2009, several months after the mother of two first appeared on the Bravo reality show. Danielle Staub, on May 25, released a book entitled “The Naked Truth”, which seems such an appropriate title now. The Jersey’s most hated Housewife told E! News on her book, saying “I’m not trying to clear up rumors and gossip. It’s not an answer to a Q&A. It is my story. Your life is not an answer to anyone, and I’m not apologetic about anything.” The 75-minute film will reportedly feature the 47-year-old mother of two in X-rated activities with an unidentified mystery man.

The tape was shot last September, several months after Staub first appeared on the Bravo reality show, a Hustler rep told TMZ.

This is not the first sex tape scandal for the “Housewives” star.

Staub obtained a court order to block ex-boyfriend Stephen Zalewski from hawking a similar sexcapade last year. At the time, she said she didn’t know Zalewski had taped their bedroom tango.

“It sickened me,” she told a judge during a hearing.

A rep for Staub – who recently penned her autobiography, fittingly titled “The Naked Truth” – had no comment on the new film.

Staub’s newest naked romp is set to be released on June 14.

e79ce8f7d2sailin isley brother diedMarvin Isley, the youngest of the R&B siblings who provided the thumping bass lines that helped drive the band’s chart success in the ’70s and early ’80s, died Sunday morning. He was 56.

Cousin and Isley keyboardist Chris Jasper told the New York Times that Marvin died at an inpatient hospice at Weiss Memorial Hospital, where he had been residing after suffering complications from diabetes.

The disease forced Isley to retire in 1996 and cost him his legs, which had to be amputated, and the use of his left hand. He had also been stricken in recent years by high blood pressure and a stroke.

In his prime playing days, however, Isley’s powerful bass could be heard on all the band’s latter-day classics, including “Fight the Power Part 1,” “The Pride (Part 1),” “I Wanna Be With You (Part 1),” and “Between the Sheets.”

Marvin was born Aug. 18, 1953, and grew up in Englewood, New Jersey. After striking out as part of a trio with older brother Ernie and cousin Chris, the threesome joined their older brothers in 1973, who had found success with such seminal tracks as “Shout,” “Twist and Shout” and “It’s Your Thing” in the ’60s.

The new lineup would release 3 + 3, their first album to go platinum. After years of touring and recording, the Isleys fractured with Marvin, Chris, and Ernie forming the Isley-Jasper-Isley group, which managed the chart-topping R&B hit, “Caravan of Love.”

Marvin returned to main group in 1991 and continued performing right up until his diagnosis. The Isley Brothers were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.
