LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board is mulling over a plan to initiate legal action against British tabloid The Sun for leveling baseless allegations against Pakistani cricketers in a new report.

The tabloid had claimed the bookies were aware of a certain scoring pattern of the Oval match between Pakistan and England on September 17.

After holding an investigation into the claims, the ICC concluded that the match was ‘no compelling evidence of any wrongdoing’ in the match.

Pakistan had won the Oval contest 22 runs.

Pakistan ODI skipper Shahid Afridi termed the allegations are “rubbish” while PCB chairman Ijaz Butt said the England cricketers had thrown the match, after claiming it was “a conspiracy to defraud Pakistan cricket”.

According to sources, the PCB is in consultation with its British lawyer Elizabeth Robertson

MULTAN: Former Pakistan cricket captain, Imran Khan, on Sunday called for stronger national institutions to prevent corruption scandals undermining the country’s favourite sport in the future.

“This whole episode of cricket reflects what is happening in the country,” Khan told reporters in Multan during a flood relief campaign.

“We are regarded as a corrupt country because our institutions are not strong and the same thing is happening in cricket because of ad-hocism in the game.”

“Pakistan cricket has suffered the greatest set-back and it’s going on with further claims of players’ involvement.”

“We have to make our institutions strong because the future of the country is bright and we should not spoil it,” said Khan, who is head of his political party, Tehrik-e-Insaaf. AGENCIES

LONDON: Former England captain Michael Atherton has urged leniency for Pakistan’s Mohammad Aamer in the fixing scandal that has shaken world cricket because the teenager was in “the grip of evil”.

Aamer, fellow seamer Mohammad Asif and Test captain Salman Butt have all been charged and provisionally suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after a report in last Sunday’s News of the World alleged that they had conspired to deliberately bowl no-balls in last week’s fourth Test at Lord’s.

England won that match by an innings and 225 runs, Pakistan’s heaviest ever Test defeat, and with it the series 3-1.

Aamer, 18, Asif, 27, and Butt, 25, were questioned by police about the claims on Friday but were released without charge, their lawyer said. They have denied any wrongdoing.

California Seeks To Suspend Jackson Doctor’s License

eaca155e56icense California Seeks To Suspend Jackson Doctor’s LicenseLOS ANGELES: California’s attorney general asked a court on Tuesday to bar Michael Jackson’s former doctor, Conrad Murray, from practicing medicine while he faces charges in connection with the pop star’s death.

Jerry Brown filed a petition in Los Angeles Superior Court on behalf of the California Medical Board asking that a judge restrict the medical license of Murray, who faces involuntary manslaughter charges, as a condition of his bail.

Murray was attending to Jackson, 50, before his sudden death last June 25 and police say he has admitted to investigators that he gave the singer the drug propofol to help him sleep. The powerful anesthetic is typically used on patients undergoing surgery.

“(The) Defendant is alleged to have administered a lethal dose of propofol and other powerful drugs to patient M.J., which resulted in the patient’s death,” Brown said in the 12-page court filing.

“The exercise of such poor professional judgment and placing the life of a patient in jeopardy requires that the (California Medical) Board take measures to protect the public from future harm.”

Murray, a cardiologist who was hired last May to care for Jackson as the entertainer prepared for a series of comeback concerts, has pleaded not guilty. He is free on $75,000 bail and faces four years in prison if convicted.

Murray has been the focus of a police probe since the Los Angeles coroner’s office ruled Jackson’s death was a homicide, caused by propofol and the sedative lorazepam.

Toxicology tests following an autopsy also found painkillers, sedatives and a stimulant in Jackson’s body.

Murray and his legal defense team have insisted he did nothing wrong and Murray told police he was not the first doctor to give Jackson propofol to help him sleep.

Last month, a judge rejected a request by Los Angeles prosecutors to suspend Murray’s license but ordered him not to use anesthesia on his patients.

Brown, a former California governor who announced on March 2 he would seek the Democratic nomination for the governorship, has waged a campaign against doctors who over-prescribe drugs.

Among the cases his office has investigated are the February 2007 death of former Playboy playmate Anna Nicole Smith, 39, of a prescription drug overdose.

Smith’s longtime companion, Howard Stern, and two doctors have been ordered to stand trial in connection with that case, which was brought by Los Angeles prosecutors.

Brown has said his office will also investigate the March 12 death of 38-year-old actor Corey Haim, apparently of a prescription drug overdose.

Shahid Kapoor Saves Anushka Sharma

cbd5af7184sharma Shahid Kapoor Saves Anushka SharmaMUMBAI INDIA NEWS : Shahid Kapoor averted a major mishap on the sets of Badmaash Company when a chandelier crashed inches away from co-star Anushka Sharma

Chandeliers have been a regular prop in Bollywood. People have periodically swung off them or the really ornate ones are used as embellishments to add to the already opulent décor. Anushka Sharma will always remember the prop with a shudder. On Sunday evening, Anushkha, who was shooting a music video for Parmeet Sethi’s Badmaash Company, escaped a chandelier catastrophe at MT Studio in Andheri (East).

Shahid and Anushka, under the supervision of choreographer Ahmed Khan, were moving towards a pre-decided spot almost underneath a huge chandelier. To everyone’s shock, the chandelier suddenly came crashing to the ground. It would have gravely injured Anushka if it hadn’t been for Shahid’s quick reflexes – he managed to push the utterly petrified Anushka out of harm’s way.

Said choreographer Ahmed Khan, “Sasha (Shahid) didn’t push Anushka away. He pulled her towards himself just in time. Actually, it was partly my fault. My instructions went a little awry. Anything could have happened. I hope we finish the song without any more problems. This is the third mishap on the sets.”

For her part, Anushka said, “Shahid reacted very quickly. Luckily no one was injured.”

But the real-life hero played down the incident. “It was nothing major,” said Shahid.

Incidentally, this is the second time within a year that Shahid has come to his leading lady’s rescue. During the shoot of Vishal Bhardwaj’s Kaminey, Priyanka Chopra was driving a scooter with Shahid as the pillion rider when she lost her balance and fell. She could have sustained a major face injury if Shahid had not buffered the fall with his hands.

“It’s what anyone would have done, given the situation,” said Shahid.
