COAS, Air Chief visit South Waziristan, Taliban attack Ladha

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kiani and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshall Rao Qamar Sulaiman have visited South Waziristan, trendpk.Com reported on Tuesday.

Soon after their visit Taliban fired rockets in the area of Ladha. COAS declared 2011 as the year of hope for the people of South Waziristan.
On the other hand the rocket attack took place after the COAS and the Air Chief left South Waziristan after inaugurating a basic health unit in Ladha. 4 rockets were fired by taliban but the rockets fell away from the population and therefore no human loss occurred whereas the media team had to hide inside a bunker. Security forces responded to the attack with heavy artillery fires.

Earlier the COAS and the Air Chief met with IDP’s and tribal leaders.

Talking to the media the COAS said that although South Waziristan has been cleared from the extremist groups but still there army would remained deployed in the area.

RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani visited Mangla today to witness various training activities. He visited a Light Commando Battalion undergoing training. While informally interacting with the troops, he appreciated their morale and professionalism.

According to an Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) press release, the COAS also witnessed Low Intensity Conflict training being carried out by Young Officers of various units/formations.

He emphasized, on the occasion, the need to comprehend dynamics of Low Intensity Conflict and develop skills at individual/unit level accordingly.

The COAS also met Lance Naik MianYousaf Jamil, World Record holder for planting most number of trees in a single day. He lauded the spirit behind the effort of Lance Naik Yousaf to promote tree plantation.

RAWALPINDI: The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani visited South Waziristan and Kurram Agencies on Tuesday. He appreciated the morale of troops and their efforts to bring normalcy to the area.

According to an Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) press release, the COAS stopped over at Jandola and Spin Jamat in South Waziristan Agency and was briefed by the local commanders about security operations in the area.

He also visited various Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) being undertaken by Frontier Works Organization (FWO) for the development of Waziristan Agency. These projects include 104 km. long Tank-Jandola-Makeen and 106 km. long Tank-Gomal-Tanai-Wana roads.

Petraeus phones Kayani, regrets NATO strikes

RAWALPINDI: Top US and NATO commander in Afghanistan David Petraeus called Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani today, and regretted the NATO strike that killed three Pakistani troops.

Three soldiers were killed in an early morning raid on Thursday when a NATO chopper fired at a Pakistani military post 200 metres inside the border in Kurram Agency.

According to details, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) commander assured the COAS that such an incident would not take place again. He conveyed his sincere feelings over the incident.

He said that it was a sad thing that the incident took place under the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force’s (ISAF) command, the channel reported

The chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, also spoke with Gen. Kayani earlier.

Quetta faces sudden petrol shortage

QUETTA: The business hub of Balochistan, Quetta, is facing a sudden shortage of petrol. Local residents are severely hit by the scarcity of petroleum products; the city administration is not saying anything to comfort the people.

According to details, pre-Eid petrol started to disappear from petrol pumps and people were compelled to buy Iranian petrol at Rs. 120 per liter.

The continuing shortage of the petrol has confined the local residents to their homes; they are unable to move within the city and other places.

The scarcity of petroleum has reduced traffic on the roads by an alarming level. SAMAA

RAWALPINDI: The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani spent Eid with troops deployed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to an Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) press release, the COAS flew over flood affected areas of Swat and visited Khawazakhela, Gharalamai (North Waziristan Agency) and Jandola (South Waziristan Agency).

He informally interacted with the troops and appreciated their role in providing relief to the flood affected people.

Holbrooke calls on COAS Kayani

ISLAMABAD: Visiting US special envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan Richard Holbrooke met with Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaque Pervez Kayani here on late Saturday.

Richard Holbrooke stayed together with COAS Kayani for a little while, according to ISPR sources.

The shot-time meeting witnessed discussion on issues of mutual interest including Pakistan’s successive role in war on terrorism, sources said.
